Text from Pages 1 - 234 of the 1977 volume:

after any sunset there is a glint a certain afterglow a rainbow show of starflake snow some dim glimmer of sweet evening shimmer after any sunset the end of day the end of love the end of living a soft celebration of once holding now that is passed Mary Celinia Bruce X ■ A 1' • - ‘ A i Ui :V vW t (From IT IS THE POEM SINGING INTO YOUR EYES; edited by Arnold Adoff; copyright J.971; Harper Row Publishers.) TABLE OF CONTENTS STUDENT LIFE............7 As we reach a turning point in our lives, we look back to see what has made us what we are. A somewhat unknown future lies ahead, and we wonder if we are prepared to face it. If we con- sider what kind of influence He I Igate has had on us, what will - we4ind?- We've met many different people, shared in their good and bad times, and grown to care about them. We've been involved in ac- tivities which have taught us things we'll never be able to ex- perience again . Of course, we '•have gone through depressing times, some of them so bad that we thought it would be impossible to me ce it through. But these times faded away, and we found that we are better individuals be- cause of them. So as we look back, we feel that whatever the future holds for us, we'll be able to handle it. Lisa Crookshanks, editor Terry Lundmark, assistant editor t student life HOMECOMING 1976 The theme of homecoming 1976 was The Fifties. Activities included the selection of the royalty, an assembly, a dance, a parade, and of course the game, in which the Knights were defeated 14-9 by the Bozeman Hawks. The only disappointment was the game; the other activities proved to be full of fun and en- thusiasum. 1976 QUEEN AND KING were Chris Keller and Bill Weston. HOMECOMING ROYA LTY—Front Row: Jeff Davenport, Jill Steinbrenner, freshmen; George Oechsli, Susan Bianchi, sophomores; Erin Cork, Don Weidenfeller, juniors; Row Two: Brenda Nicholson, Jim Holloron, Jace Cheatham, Suzy Archibald, Roxy Cahoon, Dave Levin, seniors. 14 Student Life Student Life 15 t Lie Student Life 21 28 Student Life 30 Student Life Student .Life ticrcis AFS Roberto 'Choy' Nazareno was the foreign exchange student to Hell gate from the Phillippines for the year of 1976-77. He lived with the Richard Doyle family. 34 AFS AFS has given me a once-in-a-life-time chance to experience a new and different environment and the feelings that come with it. I found out for myself that the term 'American' covers many separate kinds of people. I discovered a way of life and its people this year in El Cajon, California. There were many different activities to choose from including taking it easy at the beach, visiting Mexico, taking in a symphony concert or going to a Charger football game . It was a vast sea of new adventures for a 'hick' from Montana. But I enjoyed every minute of it. I think the most important thing I gained from my trip was the appreciation of the opportunities and advantages a smaller or larger town has to offer. You never know exactly what anything is like until you have actually been there. Lisa Perry Lisa stayed with the Norval Miller family. Lisa is shown here with her host sister, Margie. It has been a funny feeling to be a foreigner. It is a real pleasure though to know that being from another country makes me a foreigner not an 'alien'. I now feel like I'm really a part of my American family and of Missoula. I hope to come 'home' soon. This has to be THE EXPERIENCE of my life. The people of Hellgate and Missoula, especially my family, have all been terrific. The beauty of the country and the warmth of the people make it all seem like a dream. I am very happy to have this opportunity to learn more about this great nation to whom my country owes so much. The young people of the Philippines and the United States are very much alike—they're both a lot of fun. During this short stay of mine, I have learned so much about the American people, enough to make me know my own people more. My childhood dream has finally come true. If I am still dreaming please don't wake me up. Choy Nazareno Dear Hellgaters Oct. 19, 1976 This year for me has been so great and full that I find it difficult to write about. What I would call my major highlights so far have been Carnaval and becoming an Aunt. Carnaval is a wild four day Brazilian party which was right after I got here so that is where I did most of my learning. Eleven days ago my two nephews were born when my oldest sister had twins. This year had been good for me as it's taught me many things. I found out that I actually have the capacity to speak another language fluently and this alone has many advantages. When I used to think of foreign countries I thought in terms of governmental systems, major wars, im- ports and Gross National Product. I always left out the human element which is, of course, most important. I've learned that all peoples take pride in their country and believe that it's the best place for them to live, as I've seen that pride. Music and dance play a big part in all cultures. I've gained more insight by being here and have also formed a criticism of American Society . We seem to put too high a value on work and not enough on having fun and taking time out to enjoy each other's company. In Brasil there are about five times as many holidays as in the U.S. and there are many more parties here, too. Even at work or at school there is a strange combination of taking time out for just plain fun. Do something Brasilian, put down your work or plans for the day and get together with your favorite people and do what you like to do! Abracos para todos, Jeleen Jeleen Fish was the foreign exchange student to Brazil for the winter 1976-to the winter of 1977. Sharon McPhee was the exchange student to He 11 gate on the Domestic Pro- gram. She lived with the Charles Crookshanks during her stay in Missoula. In November she was moved to Libby, Montana, She came from Bel Aire, Maryland, origi- nally. 35 All-State Music Festival Jace Cheatham was the sole Hellgate member of All-State Band this year. Crowell, Assistant Conductor of the U.S. Army Band, Washington, D.C. and conductor of the U.S. Army Chorus, led the local choir through pieces by Bach, Dvorak, Pinkham, Kerr, Kent, Martin, and Kubik. All three conductors were presented with souvenirs of Montana during the concert, as well as the standing ovation that the groups received after their performance. The 1976 Bicentennial All-State Music Festival was held October 21, 22, at the University of Montana Campus. It was honored with several guest conductors and talent from high schools throughout the state. The band, orchestra, and chorus practiced Thursday and Friday in preparation for Friday's concert. The orchestra under the direction of Pulitzer Prize-winning D r. Karl Husa from Cornel I, University in New York, performed Music From Prague, 1968. The piece consists of four movements: L. Choy Nazereno had a grade average that was figured over just two quarters of work at Hellgate. Grant Parker was absent to Helena as a page and so his average would only be accurate as of the first quarter of this year. Jeleen Fish was the Foreign Exchange Student to Brazil from third quarter of last year to the third quarter of this year and so her grades for Hellgate attendance were also in- complete. Lisa Perry was the Domestic Exchange Student to El Cajon, California and her grades were incomplete as of this sixth semester. Montana's Championship Dramatists from Hell gate High School won seven consecutive tournaments this year. Their record was unblemished, having won every tour- nament they entered. Tournaments won this year in- cluded: Billings, Helena, Missoula, Eureka, Libby, Frenchtown and Stevensville. The highlight of the year's activities was placing every team member in finals at the State Tourney on Feb. 4 and 5 in Missoula. Earlier, all team members quali- fied for at least semi-finals but this was the first time in Montana history that an entire drama team made the final round. Even more impressive was the fact that every team member placed at least sixth in the State. Twelve of the twenty-one usual team members will graduate this year but Mr. Cork and those participants who remain are confident of another successful season next year. Mr. Cork summed up the year's successes by terming the team: , . .without a doubt, the hardest working team Hellgate has ever known in forensics competition. They drafted a constitution and their adviser was Mr. Dwight Hopkins. Several of the members traveled to Helena to protest bills that would abridge the rights of students and eighteen-year-olds. One of the is- sues that the students opposed was a bill to raise the drinking age to nineteen and another to raise all the rights to nineteen except for voting. The students also distributed clean air petitions when the pollution level became excessive in January of 1977. Coach Kevin Hammond, The boys started to believe in themselves, and continued throughout the season to strive for improvement. He further added, The players, through their par- ticipation in this Hellgate sport, learned lessons and philosophies that will help them in their futures. The team philosophy this year stressed two things, discipline and dedication, both very evident in the players' per- formances . Varsity Coaches-(Row 1): Head Coach Vince Zimmer, Coach Jim Lodge. Thirty-one Hellgate girls faithfully attended three weeks of daily practice preparing for what turned out to be a triumph. For the first time in three years the Hellgate team reigned victorious over their cross town rivals in this annual bout. I've got it! Lori Nelson poses with the ball. Hellgate scored six points to Sentinel's zero when Deanna Berry caught a pass from teammate Terry Abernathy for a six yard touch down. Hellgate also scored two other touch downs, one a sixty-three yard run by Danette Foster, and the other a fifty-four yard run by Ginger Preston, but these were called back by penalties. The over all look of the team was very tough defensively. The offense was also considered better than previous years. Coach Ron Jones commented, The girls had a very good attitude and were very aggressive. Looks good for the future. This year, as always, the goal of the players and coaches was to have an improved and successful season with the hope of going to State. Despite some setbacks and slow points, Hellgate did a remarkable job during the 76-77 season. Hampered by the temporary loss of starter 6'8 Marty Green through illness, Hellgate managed to struggle through the competition and emerged looking very strong. Back-up centers Greg Reich and Bill Diehl did a fine job filling in for the absent Green. Guards Mike Lowe and Mike Sullivan consistantly kept the offensive attack moving and were ever present when a basket was needed. Loren Larson, Steve Fine, and Jerry Huggins showed their talents by contributing numerous rebounds, points, and endless amounts of hustle. The Hellgate Boys Varsity Basketball team was solid and well coached. With good depth and a strong bench. Coach Russ Sheriff substituted and shuffled his players in and out effectively enough to overcome the opposition. With the hard work of the coaches and the dedication of the players, the Knights put together a well balanced and winning team.
