Hellgate's homecoming lacked the usual razzle-dazzle but nevertheless sparked student spirit with the traditional fes- tivities. The usual assemblies were aided by the cheerleaders and a few tri- cycle and sack races. The parade fol- lowed a week later and was combined with the Missoula Bicentennial Parade, which included floats from local busi- nesses. The greatest dissappointment was the game against Ananconda. We lost, 7-3. Junior Prince and Princess were Dean Barth and Nancy Aitken, sophomores, Barbara Jordan and Rich Phillips and freshman Michelle Taylor and Brian Peck. 15 Student Life 19 The annual Hellgate-Sentinel football rivalry was jinxed from the beginning. Spook the Spartans Day , theme of the assembly, fell on Halloween. Dracula, a fairy princess and twin birds were featured in a best dressed contest. An appledunking contest was won by Miss Barbara Browne, sophomore PE teacher. The worst spook of all was the game, which Hellgate lost, 23-0. it 22 Student Life 24 Student Life Student Life 27 28 Student Life Student Life 29 Bicentennial '76 Missoula. .. Kevin and Dave bet on the annual Hellgate- Sentinel football rivalry. Hellgate had a 16 point margin in the wagering but lost, 17-0. The boys were greeted with pies, thrown at a Sentinel assembly, containing birdseed, mo- lasses, toothpaste, shaving cream, coffee grounds, baby shampoo and wheat germ. Kevin’s reply was, I regret that I have but one face to give for my school. HONORS AFS'ers Share Experiences Cheryl.. . Cheryl practices a Kendyan dance with her foreign father, Above, while Below, she serves her fami- ly home-made apple pie. 38 AFS The first week of my visit to Ceylon was spent in a bug-ridden private hospital recovering from an appendectomy, beginning on the day of my arrival. My adjustments to this situation were helped by AFS representatives, AFS friends, embassy personnel and my host family who was with me 24 hours a day. I lived in the capitol and largest city on the island. People spoke Sinhalese which is the major language of the country of the second major language, English, or thirdly, Tamil. My host family consisted of my parents, two boys and four girls all of whom spoke English fairly well. Some of my most vivid and fun memories with my family in- clude making apple pie with with dried apples sent from the U.S., giving them a frisbee which they used as a wall ornament, riding an elephant, and learning one of the traditional Kandyan dances. It is my impression that the only way to really learn about a country is to actually live within a family and discover WHY they live as they do. This last summer was a memorable experience. 1 wish to thank the Missoula AFS Chapter for allowing me to represent Hellgate High School, and everyone else who supported the AFS program. Cheryl Dick Karen Martine and Karen horse around while exchange student Jeleen Fish looks on. My name is Karen Buck, I am the Domestic Exchange Student from Massa- chusetts. My stay here is over as of the 25th of January. Being an AFS student is an unique experience. One learns to live with people, adjust to other life styles, and most of all one learns to love. As AFS students we must go through all the hardships and good times with the host family. Many people don't think that being from somewhere else in their own country is as exciting as being from another country. Well, it is, if not more. People in the east have a totally different life style than people in Montana. I live Missoula Montana very much. The school is much bigger than my hometown school. My school has only 300 students in it. Missoula itself isn't what I call a city. That sounds funny since I come from a small town. Our towns are separated by a borderline, we don't have so much room in between towns. AFS is something everyone should experience. Karen Buck « Martine. My family has really considered me as one of its own. I have had the chance to know formidables - people at Hellgate, and a lot of them have helped me when I have had problems (es- pecially language problems!!). People in France know about the U.S. They learn about it in school and read and hear about it in the news. They listen to music of pop groups and watch American TV programs. This year has proven to me the only way to learn about people is to live and share with people. I hope to come back to Missoula soon and to write all my friends (. .. and to eat a lot o f donuts). Martine Sirguey All young people who have the opportunity to live in a foreign country for a whole year expereince a wonderful time. I have been able to learn about traditions, people and a life style very different from my own in France. Martine has a lively chat with her American family. Martine fruits around in the home of her American family. Martine enjoys her first Christmas in Mon- tana. Western Montana Districts sponsor desserts in different towns to raise money for these scholarships. Three Hellgate teachers, Mrs. Mary Downey, Mrs. Rose Hudgens, and Mr. Don Sommerfeld, were Ameri- can Field Service students. Karen Buck from Chattum, Masse- chusetts was Hellgate's first domes- tic exchange. Martine Sirguey is at- tending Hellgate as a senior from France. Hellgate's AFS student, Cheryl Dick, spent this past summer in Ceylon. AFS is a club which offers excellent opportunities to meet and know stu- dents from all over the world. 72 AFS Operation Europe Stakes Its Destination One, two, three SPLIT! A group of 23 persons, including five Hell- gate students and two advisors, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Graf, German teachers at Sentinel, comprise the 1976 Operation Europe touring delegation. The Operation Europe program is designed to give students an opportunity to travel abroad and further their knowledge and ex- periences. Persons participating in Operation Europe must supply about $1900 each for the trip. Operation Europe also sponsers fund-raising such as selling stationery and walnuts and splitting stacking and delivering fire wood. The profits are used for special luxuries on the trip such as a swim at the Riviera and boat ride on the Rhine River. Applications for the tour are submitted to the Grafs in the spring, one year before the tour. Club members report information and any progress of the group at the bi-monthly meet- ings. The 76 tour will be five weeks in the sum- mer. The group visits France, Germany, England, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. w u tv a o Q) a (©, OPERATION EUROPE—Front Rows Cathy Kradolfer, Kristen Sohlberg. French Club had many special French projects, party and other cooking demonstrations. It also had a midi- eval dinner. Hellgate’s AFS student Martine Sirguey was honored at a banquet. She taught the members some songs of her country. The group planned to chal- lenge all other language clubs to a soccer game in the spring. Spanish Club activities included a bake sale, a hike and a fiesta for native speakers of Spanish. Also, a costume party was planned for the beginning of the new year. All language clubs combined to plan a dessert at Christmas time and an International Dinner. The ban- quet was scheduled for the spring, adding to the inter- national effect of Modern Language Club. Opening the season with high hopes, the mighty Knights offered to many fans an exciting and memor- able year. the ball if you don't mind. Aside from the few set backs, in- cluding a disappointing 1-8 record, the Knights had a good defense and a strongminded team. The triple option offense of the beginning of the year was dropped, as it put a heavy demand on an in- experienced quarterback, Frank Jobe. Under the leadership of Jay Hug- gins and Mike Evans, the team drove on. Although the Knights achieved only a single victory, more than one opposing team was intimidated by their aggressive de- fense. Powder Puff started off with 71 interested girls, but after a couple of hard practices, ended up with 38 girls. This year we lost to Sentinel by the score of 7 to 0. In the years of competing with the crosstown rival, Senti- nel, Hellgate has won 7 games, lost 3 and tied once. Coach Ron Jones, said, Even though we had a good team we lacked the most important thing, experience. To set u a tradition of winning seasons the girls must participate more than once in their four years of high school. Those girls who participated know that it takes time, hart work and experience to win. The girls who played this ye; know how hard it is to lose. But we keep on saying We’ll show ’em next year. He said, They played good basketball and showed great potential from the beginning. The Hellgate Knights proved to be a very intense team. They showed better discretion than in pre- vious years. The players worked together well, which is what it takes to have a winning team. Coach Sherriff said the boys were easy to work with. Having strong starters and an equally com- petent reserve string, the team rarely lost momentum throughout the season. Each individ- ual was willing to work and wanted to win. All were sincere in trying to do their best, he said. The Knights abound with special talents. Blaine Taylor, said Coach Sherriff, is the most talented guard I've seen. He also cited Brad Murray as being quick on the floor and able to handle some of the tougher guard assignments. In addition, the talents of Marty Greene, Jay Huggins and Dave Gleason wove the team into a spirited basketball machine. Cross-Country 127 Superintendent Zellick Explains New Hellgate Superintendent George Zellick ’’The Missoula County High School Trustees are presenting to the citizens of the county a plan which would replace Hellgate High School as a high school. This plan is based on a Building Reserve Fund which would take ten years to complete. The plan is flexible in that it may adjust to whatever the conditions may be over the next ten years. ’’Much thought has been put into the future of Hellgate High School, however, it was the feeling of the Trustees that whatever improvements could be made to Hellgate that these would not improve the total program. Therefore, this gradual phase out seems the best solution. BOARD MEMBERS Dr. Reuben A. Diettert, Chairman Mr. Arthur O. Hightower, Vice Chairman Mrs. Rose G. Hart, Secretary Col. Gordon H.
