For ten years he taught Journalism and English, and served as advisor to the Lance and Halberd. More importantly, during this time, he taught respect, self-esteem and confidence. He yelled a little, but everyone knew his bark was worse than his bite. He didn't mind staying after school helping the Lance staff, or working on Saturdays helping the Halberd staff. We could count on him to buy a bag of doughnuts for our overtime sessions Indeed, he was more than a teacher, he was a friend; and to show our appreciation for his hard work, we hereby dedicate the 1975 Halberd to John A. National Forensics League is an honorary organization for high school students who have received at least 25 points in competitive speaking. The students must also maintain a C average or higher. The main purpose of NFL is to acquaint students with the research and thought organization involved in the writing and presentation of a speech. This year Hellgate will be going to Great Falls for the annual state meet Advisor Susan Rowberry stated that she feels the team will be well prepared. 33 Five Hellgate seniors. Forest Reinhardt. Lissa Field. Liz Lawry. Dale Gyles and Scott Lynn, were chosen as National Merit Semi- Finalists. This is the highest number of students ever chosen in one year at Hellgate. Of the 1 5.000 semi-finalists chosen nationally. 3.400 will become Merit Scholars. Competition for National Merit scholarships begins with the administration of the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test to more than one million high school juniors. The annual competition ends a year and a half later when the names of the Merit Scholars are announced. The 1 5.000 semi-finalists represent about one half of one percent of the nation's grad- uating seniors. The 38.000 Commended Students are in the upper two per cent of those expected to be graduated from high school in 1 975. The Commended Students, Charmaine Wilson, Joy Darling. Dan Boucher and Deborah Talbot, do not continue in the Merit Scholarship competition, but the high standing of these students shows their attainment in this nationwide program. To increase their scholarship opportunities, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation reports the Commended Students' names to the colleges they named as first and second choices when they took the test. Charmaine was selected by a faculty committee on the basis of scholastic achievement standing in class, quality and involvement in school and community activities. She received recognition at a Soroptimist dinner meeting, to which she and her mother were invited. DAR Good Citizen Jackie Cheatham was the Hellgate recipient of the annual DAR Good Citizen Award. She answered a questionnaire concerning national and state government and had her name entered in the state DAR competition where she may win a $100 savings bond. She also received a pin and a certificate, said Senior Counselor Marolane Stevenson. The entire senior class nominated three finalists—Jackie. Margaret Gallagher and Charmaine Wilson—with teachers making the final decision. Jackie was chosen on the basis of her dependability, leadership, service and patriotism. The contest is sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The aim is to stress qualities of good citizenship among senior high schools. said Mrs. Stevenson. 35 JUNIOR MISS CONTESTANTS- left to right Jackie Cheatham, Peggy Aitken, Lynn Brackebusch, Melinda Wolfe. The participants were chosen by faculty members for the first time this year, on the basis of leadership, character, integrity and scholarship. Six senior boys attended the American Legion-sponsored session, along with three of the six alternates. They were divided into mock cities, each of which elected a mayor, city attorney and police chief. The cities formed a mythical state which was run using Montana law as a guide. Competition for Top City was evident in sports events between cities, and spirit at every gathering during the week. All types of political scenes occurred, including a kidnaping'', in which Bob Smith was the central figure. ALTERNATES- Dave Simmons. Mike Humes, Bill Morse. BOYS STATERS- 1. Gary Nelson 2. Jackie Cheatham and Kathy Nyquist were elected to be supreme court justices, and Margaret Gallagher was one of two Montana girls elected Girls Nation senators. The atmosphere of the week-long session at Carroll College in June was described as being very patriotic” by one of the girls. Due to a lack of volunteers to spend the week with the program. Girls State was attended by a smaller number of girls than in previous years. The American Legion Auxiliary, the sponsoring organization, had a difficult time coordinating a place and time for the event. One interesting news item was that the Equal Right Amendment was rejected by Girls State Delegates. Hellgate's pep pushers operated a concession at the Missoula County Fair to earn money for uniforms. They also conducted rummage sales, bake sales, and sold Hellgate T-shirts. The girls had to raise their own funds to attend games and tournaments. The cheerleaders began practice two weeks before school began in the fall. They had double sessions daily in addition to practicing at least once a week during the summer. The girls practice at least twice a week and usually three times throughout the school year. Forssen Journalism is just a stepping stone to an aircraft designing career for John Purchio as he folds over the wing. The Lance, winner of innumerable awards, was once more diligently slaved over by a capable and talented staff. Upholding the tradition of fine journalistic work, the staff members spent long hours interviewing and gathering facts which were coordinated into a biweekly newspaper. In the job of reporting the news, the Lance brought to light such stories as Deschamps Up from Down Under; Leaves Kangaroo City; the tragic tales of Anna Banana, Lena Lemon and Leech Peach, relevant editorials on Popular Porno and Perplexing Policies . School events were covered fully and objectively with editorializing remaining solely in the editorials. Advisor John A. Forssen commented that the Lance staffers are great foot-dragg-ers. but on the other hand, they come wobbling through when they are needed. Also that their doughnut-eating propensities are enormous. True to form, the staff members, led by editor Merri Hartse, together gobbled dozens of out dated doughnuts forced upon them by the advisor. 65 66 1. Charmaine Wilson. Editor 2. Wendy Hurlbert. Somehow, between begging for pictures, slaving over wounded typewriters, and listening to the rantings and ravings of an irate editor, the Halberd came into being once more. Created by a staff of enthusiastic persons, the Halberd's motto was best phrased by the beloved advisor, John A Forssen The yearbook isn't for this spring, it's for years from now I As new staff members were initiated into the world of yearbook putting-together, experienced members were already hard at work perfecting the art of loafing. As deadlines approached, frantic minds ground into gear, producing blurry photos, in- coherent copy and cluttered pages. All of which were straightened out by spending 'deadline eve'' still hard at work. Surprisingly, out of this cacaphony of noise and general bedlam a sort of history of the 1974-75 school year was recorded and published for all posterity. 67 Coach Larry McKinney tallies up another winning score. The 1974 season was not a successful season if you were to compare it to the previous three years, but by itself could be called a success. With only one returning letterman from the 1973 team we had to start from scratch. It took some time for the runners to make an adjustment from the mile-and-a-half races they ran in junior varsity competition to the two-and-a-half mile races they ran in varsity competition this year. They had their ups and downs during the course of the season, but regrouped for the state meet and finished a solid third. Rick Hanson. Gary Nelson and Bill Rolshoven will be lost to graduation, while four varsity members will return. There will be some very fine young runners trying to fill the vacancies, among will be Charlie Clubb, Roger Fuhrman, John Patterson, and Rick Thompson. Scott Larson. Jim Rogge and Bill Rolshoven ran good races in the state meet. Gary Nelson ran a great race, but Rick Hanson ran a super race Next year we are hoping for the state title. The majority of the runners were young and the added experience of the season resulted in improved times and the development of a strong team with great potential. The '75-76 season held great promise for the team. The girls discovered a great deal of personal satisfaction can be derived from running Cross Country Endurance and paces improved, enabling the girls to deal better with competition. Each girl found her performance is important not only for herself, but for her team, thus making her responsible to her teammates as well as to herself. Head Coach Deanna Vacura Coach Deanna Vacura dreams of sweet victories. 1974 Hellgate There are many ways to measure the success of a football team. The most common and ordinary means is through the win and loss record. The Hellgate Knights of 1974 should not be measured against that gauge, because they were successful in so many other often-forgotten categories Beginning the season with a team in which only six players had logged more than six to eight minutes of playing experience, they steadily improved through the season and played their best game the last game of the year. With a team that lacked leadership at the beginning of the year, they weathered the 0-6 start and hung together until they were a respected football team at the end. Through the emotionally tough beginning only two players quit and the Seniors of '75 with the rest of the ball club never quit or gave up on the field in practice or a game. Trailing Sentinel 14-0 with less than a minute to go in the first half, they could have given up but didn’t and tied the score only to lose in the final 10 seconds of the game, after pride had kept the Spartans from scoring from the one-yard line. The Knights of '74 have the respect and admiration of the coaching staff and one would hope the future Knights will be as successful as the Knights of 74 Head Coach Gary Trenary Knights 1974 TEAM CAPTAINS — Front Row: Brad Graeter. Page Football Freshman football is in essence a learning and orientation year. They must learn a new system of offense and defense and in some cases they must learn to play football. This new system demands a lot of work with many people who are new to each other and the coaching staff. During the year the boys were exposed to the fundamentals and assignments of varsity football. This year several boys were screened into positions. Although the boys had decided what position they enjoyed, the coaching staff moved them to a new position in which they felt the boy would help the team the most. The Freshman football program does not place extra emphasis on winning but rather on playing experience for as many future Knights as possible. We realize that between their Freshman and Junior year the young men will do a great deal of maturing both mentally and physically. The freshman third stringers this year could be all-staters their senior year. We had an excellent group of freshman this year although our record: Reds 1 -5, Golds 0- 7, didn't show it. If the beys can rid themselves of mistakes at the Freshman level then they will be a more disciplined team on the varsity level and will prove successful in the run for the coveted championship trophy. Despite the 1974 7- 0 loss to the Sentinel Sparkies, Hellgate is still ahead in the 10-year standings having won seven, lost two, and tied one. Besides having the satisfaction of learning and recognizing the important plays, the girls practiced good sportsmanship and teamwork, just as the boys' team does. Heydon Freshman Gold Basketball Coach The Reds had a very interesting record this year. They have at times played outstanding ball and at other times have played as poorly as anyone could. This lack of consistency has kept them from being a great freshman team with a great record. However, they have the talent, the leadership, and the desire to be one of the best basketball teams in Hellgate's history. Somewhere down the line they must develop that burning desire for excellence that all champions have. They are on the brink of having it now, but it still is not there and their lack of consistent play demonstrated that fact this season. They have been a great bunch to work with, a hard working crew that never complained, no matter what was asked of them. I expect great things of them and hope they can combine with the Golds and bring a state championship to Hellgate three years from now. Modern Dance sponsored its fall formal, the Frost Fantasy, and had bake sales to raise money. Speech Even though leaving for tournaments early—sometimes 5 o'clock as the rooster crows—wasn't much fun. 35 Hellgate speechers kept on believing in the power of the spoken word. With underclassmen dominating the ranks of the squad, the season was termed a building year. New competitive events were added Heading the list was duo interpretation, which allowed two students to interpret selections of literature. Although the team had seen better years, it did not dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of the team members. They looked forward to the State Speech Tournament in Great Falls to cap off a season of experience. 112 Speech The Boobie Prize. . .again! Pondering his stuffed and aching stomach is Kevin Hunt. Mark Elison and Andy Taylor — along with the United States — Eric Giere. Kelly Daniels. Pat Olson, Ross Best and Marty Elison — were judged as two of the ten best delegations in representing the activities and policies of their nations For outstanding work in committees. Kenya was honored. Members included Mark Beaufait, Nancy Maxson. Gary Nelson and Liz Lawry. Even though portrayal of a foreign country wasn't easy, delegates to MUN found the role-playing a rewarding experience. Weeks of studying countries and writing resolutions were culminated at a three-day convention in November at the University Center Ballroom. Members spent a full day in committees considering resolutions, deciding whether they should be sent to the General Assembly. The raising of oil prices by the Arab bloc, war threats by France and Belgium and food embargoes by the United States fueled the crisis furnace. Through several hours of debate in the Security Council, the problems were resolved, with universal peace being the goal You meet the nicest people in MUN. Hellgate's group belongs to the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). When hamming was on the verge of extinction, the ARRL worked to prevent that. Five members have earned their ham licenses. They worked to set up a radio station in one of the practice rooms. The group sold student directories to raise money. The money was used to buy more equipment. Members built their own radios. Officers were Pres. Kevin Hunt. Vice Pres. Lar Autio and Sec.-Treas. Mark Beaufait. Kevin communicated with persons in Japan and the Antarctic. RADIO CLUB—Front Row: Mark Beaufait. Bob Coffman. Service to the community and the individual was the goal of Student Action for Education (SAE). In 1974-75. membership was small, but members still strove to help others. Each member had his own project. All worked on a volunteer basis. One girl worked for a quarter at the Humane Society shelter caring for animals and doing all the little jobs that were necessary. Another girl worked in the gift shop at St. Patrick Hospital. Another project was helping in the grade school special education program. The only expense for the group was paying the charter fee of $10. SAE is an outgrowth of the National Education Society. SAE stood for more than words. It represented a chance to help onesself by helping others. 117 SPANISH CLUB—Front Row: Brent Stephens, Poncho Valdi- via, Carla Gregory, Adv. Mike Oke, Adv. Joan Pulver. Row 2: Jeri Nydoske. Members had an Oktoberfest and went caroling at Christmas, with the old traditionals sung in German. To raise money, the club sold German chocolate, hard candy and salami. A camp, where only German was spoken, was planned at Salmon Lake. French Club tried to coordinate all levels of fluent Frenchies. Besides having a crepe party in the fall and other cooking demonstrations, the group planned to challenge all other language clubs to a knockdown, kick-out soccer game in the spring. Spanish Club members frolicked at the several parties they had with native Spanish speakers. The group decorated the Home Living Center and provided refreshments to add to the festivity. The members also managed to stumble their way to the Rattlesnake area for a nature hike. All language clubs combined to plan a dessert at Christmas time. A full spread banquet was scheduled for the spring, adding to the international effect of Modern Language Club. 119 Orchestra did more than play around. The informal, non-select group, with the help of Advisor Bruce Baty. planned outings and trips on which everyone was welcome to tag along—even non-members. Troubadour 125 Poems, prose, short stories, artwork and many long hours of reading, reviewing and rereading went into Hellgato's literary magazine, the Troubadour. The Troubadour staff started out the year by advertising and selling subscriptions for the magazine which was to materialize some time in April. After selling enough subscriptions to begin publication, the hard-working staff members campaigned for material to be submitted by talented students. The material received was then read and reread by staff members who selected only the best works to fill the pages of the Troubadour. Although Concert Band members did not have their new concert duds until after their winter concert they were really together in everything else Fifty-eight sophomores, juniors and seniors worked diligently every day during fifth and sixth periods to turn out a harmonious year. They gave several performances, including a Christmas concert, a fun program and a concert for the seniors in May. They planned to play at graduation to give the seniors a musical good-by. Concert Band blended several levels of talent and ability to come up with a great sound which was meant to endure a lifetime. Freshman Band Uh one, and uh two. and .... where did everyone go? Thirty-three of Hellgate's top freshman musicians formed their own band this year, under the direction of Mr. Charles Johnson. For the first time, there were enough freshmen to have a band separate from Concert Band. Freshman Band played in the joint Hellgate-Sentinel program in the fall. They planned to put on a special frosh performance in March along with Hellgate's freshman choir. They also performed with Concert Band in several concerts, such as the Christmas program, and the pop concert in February. Come back here! You have to practice! FRESHMAN BAND—Front Row; Rita Hawkins. One jazz band was for freshmen only and the other one was made up of interested sophomores, juniors and seniors. This was the first year Mr. Charles H. Johnson, director, formed an all-freshman jazz band. Each band numbered about 20 students. The purpose of the jazz bands was to explore deeper into jazz and rock music than was possible in the classroom. While they didn't have a player for every instrument, the Jazz Bands did have players who switched off and played different instruments thus creating the effect of a total band. The jazz bands played in most of the band concerts during the year. They also planned to play in the State Jazz Festival in the spring. FRESHMAN JAZZ BAND — Front row: Rory Krout. She started with freshman social science courses and worked up to senior government classes, hut she returned to the junior level because she preferred American History to U.S. Government. “ l eaching is a great profession,” said Mrs. 'Taylor. “Kids are so optimistic and don’t have the oppressing problems many adults have.” Mrs. Taylor noticed the changes in Hellgate’s student body from 1957. She said she sees a major change in the students’ attitudes toward social values. “Students today are more mature, less easily satisfied, and more concerned and serious,” she remarked. Mrs. 'Taylor is looking forward to having some spare time. She plans to travel, utilize her culinary skills, and work with other hobbies that she did not have time for while teaching. Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor Retiring Teachers I Mrs. Pearl Felker After teaching 34 years, 12 of them at Hellgate, Mrs. Pearl Felker left the profession at the end of the 1973-74 year. Mrs. Felker, a member of Hellgate’s English Department since 1962, said she has many fine memories. She witnessed the establishment of Hellgate as an independent high school in 1964. She said she has always preferred this time-worn building to the shiny, modern Sentinel building. “Hellgate is like an old home that has been renovated. I’ve watched it grow.” During her stay at Hellgate, Mrs. Felker taught mostly freshmen and sophomores but also had begun working with an individual study group of about 15 seniors. “I worked with a wonderful faculty and student body,’ said Mrs. Felker. “I found myself growing more and more fond of Hellgate as the time grew close for me to leave.” File “mental jocks are the students of the National Honor Society.
