During her stay in Missoula, Malfrid discovered she didn’t like crunchy granola, could wear long dresses to school and developed a liking for American music. Malfrid took classes at Hellgate that weren’t available to her in Norway. Her schedule included Guitar, Concert Choir and American History. Malfrid lived with the John R. Stevenson family of Elk Ridge. Malfrid’s American sisters and brother attending Hellgate are Jim, senior; Judy, junior, and Laurie, sophomore. Malfrid comes from Klepp, a village on the southwestern coast of Norway. In Norway she attended school in the neighboring village of Byrne. 38 Malfrid with Laurie and Judy Stevenson, members of her American family. 9 Cindy Bigger staff Cross country skiing, the Norwegian language and formalized education were just a few of the adventures Cindy Biggerstaff had to conquer while she was in Norway and an AFS exchangee. Apart from her difficulties in language and her isolation from home events, Cindy felt enthusiastic over her first cross country skiing experience. Cindy stayed with the Arsinn Klakegg family in Langesand, Norway, which at the time of her stay had a son enrolled in the AFS program in Wisconsin. Cindy's subject load consisted of eight subjects. Some of these were Old Norsk, an ancient Norwegian dialect; religion, and Norwegian history. Cindy shows true culinary skill while making her first loaf of bread. 39 - Keep on smilin’! The two girls scored among the highest in the nation on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT NMSQT). The girls were rated in the top 2 per cent of the millions of graduating seniors throughout the nation. In order to become finalists, the semifinalists first must be endorsed by their school officials. Then they must pass a second test and show their academic records and other accomplishments and honors. “Hellgate should be very proud of these intelligent, hard-working individuals who have been rated so highly in national competition,” said Principal Roger Eble. SEMI-FINALISTS - Kathy Magone and Kathy Holden. Commended Students The students receiving the highest scores in each state were moved to the semifinalist category. These students will now be eligible for college Merit Scholarships in the spring. The commended students have been recognized for their excellent performance on the PSAT NMSQT, even though their scores did not qualify them for the semi-finalist status. 42 The PSAT NMSQT is a national test given to interested high school juniors. Students were encouraged to channel their constructive criticism of classes through the committee. Physical education modifications were discussed. Suggestions were that students be allowed to choose when they wanted P. E. during their four-year stay. Opinion polls were of utmost importance to the student-controlled committee on evaluating courses. The principal duty of the Halberd staff was, of course, to put out the yearbook. Sound easy? That was hardly the case since deadlines had to be met, copy had to be written and at the same time, Halberd members had to constantly be on the look out for fresh new ideas. Outstanding players were Dan Lake and Mike Lowe. The coach said the team was great to work with. The tremendous strength displayed by the defense helped in establishing a season record of 4 wins, 3 losses. Coach Harper said the only downfall was that boys, when entering football, do not get in shape before practice. If they would just get prepared before then, they could start the season strong. Golds The Hellgate Golds football team was one of strength and quickness in the 1973 season. Coach Ron Jones said he had an extremely quick group of boys to combine for a strong team w hich ended the season with a 2-4 record. Although the record wasn’t heavy in the w'in column, the boys learned a lot of football fundamentals and strategy. They were hard workers and the coach said the boys have future champ characteristics if they continue with their hard work and practice. Both the Reds and Golds teams combine to make the Knights, and they should be a good squad. GOLDS FOOTBALL — Row 1: Perry Farley, Steve Johnson, Scott Clark. Don Wallace, Jim Senecal. The record became 7 wins for Hellgate and 1 win for Sentinel. Due to the great amount of snow, passing was extremely difficult. The Powder Puffers had to resort mostly to running plays in which they slithered through slippery slush. The score of the ball game was the result of the Montana playoff rule. Through the whole regulation game the teams battled each other to a scoreless finish. During the overtime Hellgate scored 6 points by outgaining Sentinel with 35 yards. Coach Ron Jones prepared the 1973 Hellgate Powder Puff football team. The girls practiced twice a day, rain or snow, to develop an especially strong and hard hitting defense and quick offensive team. Mr. Jones said he enjoyed coaching the girls and the humor in watching girls play, as well as their sometimes non-existent plays. The varsity Cross Country team started the 1973 season on a winning note and extended last year's undefeated string from 9 wins to 15 straight wins before missing the state championship trophy by 1 point to Butte Central. During the season the top 5 runners were a mixture of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, but when the pressure was put on in the state meet, it was the seniors who grabbed the top five places for Hellgate. Rob Reesman took 1st place at state, that win being his 18th consecutive victory. The other young men who did an extremely good job were Pat Groshong 7th, Neil Cole 10th, Mike Rasmussen 11th, Dan Hunter 27th, junior Tim Rasmussen 31st and sophomore Steve Hanks in the upper half of 98 runners. The 1973 season was the third successful season in a row for the team. In 1971 Hellgate missed 1st place by one point, taking second place. Inin 1972 the Hellgate harriers took 1st place, and in 1973 once more second place. Reesman, Mike Rasmussen and Neil Cole have been on all three of these successful teams. Reesman, who did an outstanding job of running, along with Rasmussen and Cole, helped establish a tradition of an extremely strong cross country team for Hellgate. The Hellgate JV team was led by Rick Hanson, Bill Rolshoven, Steve Hanks, Scott Larsen and Dan Lewis. The JV runners won all 8 meets this year, with 7 of the 8 scores being a perfect score of 15. Reesman was voted “Most Valuable Runner” and Rick Hanson was voted “Most Improved Runner” by the team. Boys Cross Country Hellgate runner Mike Rasmussen strides neck to neck with a purple turkey for a win. Country Girls Cross The 1973 Cross Country team won only two meets this year due to the fact that the team was young and inexperienced. The team lost its other meets, but each course provided new experience for each of the girls. Coach Charlotte Manthie’s most outstanding girl was Belinda McDonald, a senior, who has been on varsity since her freshman year. Not having Belinda on the team next year is going to hurt. Coach Manthie’s top girls for the season were Belinda, Susan Nokleby, Sue Gooley, Denise Giffin, Terry Nyquist, Gail Verlanic and Karen Schiweck. Coach Manthie said she lost two very good runners, Teresa Nokleby, and Terrie Browne due to injuries early in the season. The coach is optimistically looking forward to next season. Top runner Belinda McDonald 79 Lisa Robbins slugs with all her strength to get the ball up and over. The intramural program for girls included many sports: softball, bowling, basketball and volleyball. In volleyball the girls played strictly for winning. Each team had one main goal; the championship. Girls Intramural Volleyball Helping hands and team work are an essential to a winning team. Commencing the season with a squad of unknown ability, Coach Jim Lodge tutored the 1973 girls basketball team through a hard but successful season. Because girls basketball was in its beginning stage this season, Coach Lodge felt the girls played remarkably well. Sharon Gleason was the most outstanding player and captain of the team. The girls performed at a high degree of efficiency plus determination in establishing a season record of seven wins and five losses. They also earned 2nd in league play and qualified for divisional. Coach Lodge said that he is losing only two girls next year, Terri Lassise and Val Jahner. Mr. Lodge feels that his team will be outstanding next year. GIRLS BASKETBALL — Row 1: Manager Connie Rice. A few of the many standouts for the season were Gus Campbell, Ed Campbell, Steve Resner and Tony Koures. As this year’s team soon discovered, wrestling is an entirely different experience as opposed to team sports. It encompasses competing in front of hundreds of people knowing that a win is entirely up to the individual. His teammates cannot cover his mistakes, and there is no one to blame but himself if he loses. Conversely, the exhiliration felt in winning is heightened because he knows he has won on his own. Encouraging coaches were Head Coach Lanny Bryant and Assistant Coaches Bob Wiesner, Mike Oke and Larry Bicha. Hellgate Junior Varsity wrestling began its season on Nov. 15 with practices lasting between two and three hours. A winning wrestler is one who can think calmly and keep his head when he is exhausted. This ability is developed through the individuals experience as a wrestler. This is the function of the Junior Varsity team; to give each of the boys as many matches as possible so he will “get the job done” as a varsity wrestler. Coaches Bob Wiesner and Mike Oke were the men who worked w ith these JV boys throughout the year to prepare them for the varsity year to come. Working hard all year long and putting forth much effort was the freshman wrestling team, coached by Mr. Larry Bicha. The main purpose of the freshman squad was to acquaint the boys with the basic fundamentals of wrestling, all positions, and to make them realize the dedication necessary in wrestling. Curt Jovin, Kevin McDowell, Roger Coombs, Joel Cusker, Tim Bowers, Ken Barker, Keith Mobley and Keith Gyles proved to do an excellent job of wrestling their freshman year. Coach Demmons said he was happy with the good humor and great personality that his team had. “It makes coaching and practice a lot more fun when there are a few smiles on the court, said Coach Demmons. He further stated that even though the boys joked around and had fun that they also were willing to work strenuously. Soph Coach Richard Dunn 96 JV Coach Tom Demmons The sophomore basketball season went well due to hard work put forth by the boys. Coach Richard Dunn said he had several boys who played well above average. During the middle of the season the team had a slump but managed to come out of it. Coach Dunn said he had an extremely large squad this year consisting of 18 players. Because of this unusually big team he could not give each boy enough individual coaching, and he was proud of the playing the boys put forth. That was the motto of Hellgate’s new group. Students for the Equal Rights Amendment. The group was formed to make the Equal Rights Amendment known to the students and to raise funds for its support. Equality in the eyes of the law, regardless of sex, is the goal of the Equal Rights Amendment. This would include the same pay for jobs performed by men and women and selective service for women. SERA disbanded when the 1974 legislature voted on the amendment. Among SERA projects was a student opinion poll, in which students voted for the amendment three to one. SERA also helped the League of Women Voters take a city-wide survey on the amendment. The group hoped to charter a bus to Helena while the ERA was being debated. But mostly, SERA helped the Missoula ERA Ratification Council raise money to support the bill. Just think, girls; some day, while you’re serving in the army, you can thank the SERA! SERA Club members count up the results of the student opinion poll concerning the ERA. 101 Vocational Industrial Clubs of America You’ve heard of the Summer Olympics and of the Winter Olympics, but have you heard of the Vocational Olympics? The members of Vocational Industrial Clubs of .America (VICA) participate in hammering, drawing and welding events. This happens every spring when all the clubs get together and compete for medals for best welder, draftsman, and metalworker. They hoped to bring back as many medals as in previous years. The V1CA program includes helping various service groups improve the community by doing such things as building toys for Head Start, a community action program for underprivileged children of Missoula. Each runner kept track of his own miles. At the end of the 12-month period, those running 1.000 miles received a T-shirt! But that wasn’t their only reward! They had the satisfaction of knowing their bodies were in excellent condition and that they could what very few others could. 1,000 milers who ran 1,000 miles-from left: Dan Hunter, Scott Larson, Gary Nelson, Rob Reesman, Tracy Johnson. 103 Best-in-the-West Orchestra Director Harold Herbig. Orchestra Playing his day away is Andy Taylor. Annie Lackschewitz and Charlie Clubb get ready and . . . play. “Good Vibes”; that was the story of Hellgate’s Orchestra. But success did not come easily. The orchestra, which was made up of more than 50 students, practiced fourth and fifth periods, as well as Monday nights with Sentinel’s orchestra. Only after much practice did they attend the state orchestra festival in Bozeman, Nov. 29 through Dec. I. The orchestra appeared in a joint concert with the Missoula grade schools all-city orchestra and in the spring, attended both the district and state music festivals. Here, along with the full orchestra were various ensembles and solos. They also played at the annual spring concert and hoped for a trip to Expo 74 in Spokane. 104 The sun beams on Forest Reinhardt. Every Thursday night a group of charming, witty, suave and debonair guys met in the resource center. Among this group were a few good chess players. In the fall, Chess Club attempted to recruit new members by giving a blue diamond to anyone who could beat the resident champion. No one won the diamond. Later in the year, the annual chess tournament with Sentinel was played. Plans were in the making for a tournament through the mail with Troy High School in Fullerton, CA. The various moves would be recorded on paper and mailed back and forth. This would be the first tournament between any Montana and California high schools. Besides this unusual situation, Chess Club had only two officers. Raymond Miller, who served as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, and Walter Congdon, piece cleaner. They also had an hors d' oeuvre party with French music. Dream of a four-day camp was what enchanted the German Club. They hoped to take the German classes to a resort early in May. While they were waiting for May to come they had German dinners and a pizza party at Shakey’s. Spanish Club activities this year included a party with native speakers of Spanish and slides of Latin America. They also had treats and sang songs at their meetings throughout the year. This group is known as Concert Band and includes all who play in any hand, such as jazz hand, marching hand and pep band. Playing the more serious type of music was the Concert Band’s purpose, leaving the marches, ballads and jazz to the other bands at Hellgate. Concert Band took time out this year from its busy schedule of engagements to attend the band festival in Billings during March. The group also gave a “Happy Times” concert at the end of January and the annual Spring Concert which featured the senior solos. Director Charles Johnson. Drama Team Winning for the drama team was as easy as one, two and three as the dramatists brought home trophies from Class AA Speech and Drama tournaments. Drama involves more than just acting. It is selecting good literary material and observing what other schools have done with various cuttings. The team itself involves 120 persons, the biggest in all the years. Members set their goal as presenting the student body with a new form of enter- tainment. After thumbing through many movie catalogs and taking a poll of what the students wanted to see, the group decided to show “Psy- cho,” “Lord of the Flies,” “Henry V” and “The Golden Age of Comedy” and many others. The money made went toward better movies, since Cinema Club is a non- profit organization. 127 Young Lifers take part in a sing along. Young Life A pie in the eye is better than two in the bush. That Jesus Christ is a person everyone can relate to was what Young Life tried to establish. The group attempted to present Jesus Christ to its 70 members every Monday night by singing, listening to speakers, and praying. Young Life wasn’t always engaged in serious business. Its members put wheels on beds and had races pushing the beds. Another heavy project was the Weigh-In, in which the members of the Young Life groups at Hellgate and Sentinel weighed in. Hellgate won by about two and a half tons. The members could also attend winter and summer camps. 128 t OUTDOOR CLUB - 1. Carla Boehmler. 2. Lissa Field. 3. Wendy Hurlbert. 4. Becky Gordon. 5. Outdoor Club did everything from biking to snowshoeing, including talking back to some coyotes. Members took an all-day hike up Stuart Peak, bicycled to Frenchtown, and snowshoed at Lolo Pass. Outdoor Club, which had no officers, was originated by Becky Gordon to give students some outdoor experience and insight into nature. In a day of environmental stress, the members studied the complex problems. The goal was to help members develop their thinking about the environment. Members suggested a wide variety of outings and strenuous efforts were made to fulfill these adventures. On an overnight trip to YY'ild Horse Island, suggested by Becky, members climbed a mountain in the middle of the night to listen to and answer back to coyotes. The group of enthusiastic, hardworking young ladies jived every day during period six in the girls’ gym. The routine first had to be set to music. Then all the girls had to learn the routine. Finally the routine had to be perfected in Advisor Shirley Rosengren’s eagle eyes. They had speakers on “What Can be Expected from a Boss,” and “What is Expected of You as an Employee.” These girls sold glitter plaques of Knight football players, pumpkins, Santa Clauses and 2 cartoon characters. OEA joined with other state OEA Clubs for a convention, where they took tests on office skills such as shorthand and typing. These girls typed their way into the hearts of the student body at Hellgate. Student Action for Education was formed to encourage students to become involved in the helping professions. Each member chose the area he was interested in and developed a project dealing with that area. Some of these projects were working in day care centers, teaching Sunday school and starting an animal sitting service. As a group, SAE helped decorate for the MEA Convention, and sold candy for additional funds. The members were hopeful that these experiences would be beneficial to their future careers. T hey were to be chaperoned by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Graf, German teachers at Sentinel. Each person paid $1,500 for expenses. Additional money was earned by selling firewood and stationery, as well as by a bazaar. This will go toward such things as a trip to the Vatican, an elevator ride to the top of the Eiffel tower and numerous visits to museums, galleries, operas and concerts. After the members had written resolutions and studied their assigned countries, they came to Missoula for their own United Nations. Once here, they attempted to pass their resolutions, first through committees and then through the General Assembly. But getting resolutions passed wasn't easy — just ask the two delegates from France who were taken hostage when their country wouldn't go along with the Arab Bloc’s resolutions. MUN disbanded after November but came together again in the spring to start working on next year’s session. “What a day!” American Field Service Seeing the world through her own eyes was Cindy Biggerstaff. She was this year’s foreign exchange student in Norway, sponsored by the Hellgate Chapter of American Field Service. AFS is an organization of students at Hellgate, the goal of which was to send a student abroad. They conducted money-making projects such as selling magazines, Hellgate Knight Mugs, AFS stationery, and sponsoring the Homecoming dance. The profits went toward sending next year’s student, Joni Deschamps, to the country where she was to be placed. AFS also tried to acquaint the students with Malfrid Bratveit. Malfrid, a student from Norway, studied this year at Hellgate. AFS was characterized as the fine things in life — food, good times, and international friendships. The Hellgate chapter of Distributive Education Cluhs of America worked to make the public aware of the school’s Distributive Education program. This was achieved through speaking to groups and doing service projects on the local, state and national level. Some of the projects were selling candy at the Knight Spot and odds and ends in the DECA store. Nationally, DECA was host to the Western Regional Leadership Conference, attended by more than 1,500 student members and advisors. The Hellgate group of jumping, leaping, and sore-muscled modern dance girls got together two times a week for a modern dance “dance-a-long.” These practices were two hours long at various grade schools around Missoula. The main production, in the spring, was what the girls had in their minds as they drove the snow-packed winter streets to get to their practices or felt the blisters and aching muscles that came after the hard work. When the girls weren't practicing, they were having bake sales or playing host to the annual Frost Fantasy. They also performed for groups outside of Hellgate when invited. Modern Dance members “float down Higgins during the homecoming parade.
