Paal Goodman io JMEC0MING72 Color, spirit and blasting brass bands created a merry celebration as Hellgate and Sentinel com- bined troops in joint Home- coming festivities. The scintillating ceremony of royalty crowning opened the joyful festivities, followed by a downtown parade and deafening outdoor pep assembly in Bonner Park. Both schools ' frenzied bands, bouncing cheerleaders and students bodies created the evening pep rally. Both schools dumped their op- ponents in a football double- header at the fairgrounds. The victories were followed by a joint dance to the electronic music of Devlin, MacDonald and Scales. The theme of the merrymaking was Everything You Always Wanted to Know About High School But Were Afraid to Ask, which obviously was the decision of Stupid (oops) Student Coun- cil. If you were a delegate to Boys or Girls State you were doing your thing as representative of Hellgate. Carroll College was the site for the girls and West- ern Montana College in Dillon the boys. Delegates were given an experience and insight into the workings of government. Mock conventions elected candidates to various offices. Interested juniors applied. The faculty then voted on those students who they felt would best represent Hellgate through qualities of leadership, responsibility and involvement. Juniors had the final vote determining delegates and alternates. GIRLS STATE ALTERNATES-Ruth Coats, Jan Hulla, Susan Cochran. Not pictured: Shirley Aarstad, Lynn Ogle, and Ann Cunningham. During the empire of Julius Caesar, the Romans needed to pass through this valley in order to con- quer France. The ancient inhabitants, large, strong soldiers called Salessi, did not like having the Romans in their territory. Thus they went to the top of the mountains and threw large rocks on the Roman troops. They were able to stop the huge army for two years. I wanted you to know about my little valley so that you can understand why I love it so much. But you also know how much I like Montana, its inhabitants, my new family and of course Hellgate. In my residence here, not only has my Eng- lish improved, but also my personality. I have participated in almost all aspects of the American way of life and my under- standing of people has increased. Curriculum Committee, once a Student Council experiment, emerged fully independent as one of Hellgate ' s new organizations. Opened to all students willing to come— and work— Curriculum Committee studied many aspects of the school ' s curriculum. Members sat in on department meetings to hear what teachers wanted. They listened to the ideas of students, then got together and drafted suggestions for changes in the school ' s curriculum to present to the administration. Curriculum Committee didn ' t stop there. If it ' s suggestion was adopted, they would review it, to see if it was an effective change. Members discussed plans for a nine-period school day, talked about revisions for the Eng- lish curriculum and reviewed programs such as the freshman careers course and driver educa- tion. One of the first changes was a rotating meeting schedule, which enabled more members to attend the meetings. During the school year, Student Council planned a joint (K)nighttime homecoming parade and pep rally at Bonner Park with Sentinel . The actions seemed to improve relations with those kids from the other side of town . Other projects planned were a Student Coun- cil sponsored bus trip (and picnic) to Kalispell for a football game and a student exchange pro- gram. A Winter carnival, the removal of the H on Mt. Jumbo and the building of a mall on Eddy Avenue (depending on the city ' s plan to close the block) were discussed. The club members played a 24-hour basketball game against the Sentinel Key Club members and had a leg contest to earn money for Lor- rie Johnson who had leukemia. Key Club spon- sored a Sadie Hawkins dance and participated in an assembly skit with the Pep Club. One future plan discussed by Key Club mem- bers was to include more students to reach a more outstanding potential in community ser- vice. It was suggested to merge with S Club, a Girls ' service club, into a Keyettes Club. The clubs would have their separate meetings, but would join for more beneficial and varied proj- ects. Plans for the 1972-73 year were to sponsor a $50 schol- arship for a senior varsity wrestler, and to sponsor an annual Powder Puff Wres- tling Match. They served as hostesses at all tournaments, kept score at all Frosh and Junior meets and provided the school spirit Hellgate showed throughout the year. The Lettermens Club is pledged to perform duties that aid and promote the spirit and welfare of the athletic programs at Hellgate. To be a member, a young man must be a varsity athletic award winner. Fund raising activities used to offset the costs of ath- letic-affiliated expenses are often run by the club mem- bers. xS Some fund raising activities include athletic program ad sales, selling programs at games and operating pop and popcorn concession stands at basketball games and wrestling matches. The money made possible the pur- chase of a movie projector, helped defray the cost of filming games and allowed the purchasing of individ- ual trophies and the bettering of trophies already won by Hellgate athletic teams. The club will assume the sponsorship of the Chuck Peck Track Award, in remembrance and honor of the late Charles R. Peck. It will be awarded annually to the young man selected as the outstanding track and field athlete. The head coaches of the various sports at Hellgate serve as advisors for the club. 57 I I ■X. The big thrill of the season was when the team played Kalispell in a game which was described as a snow battle. The experience of running plays on the snow- blanketed field ended in a 6-6 tie. This year the Freshman Red football team, under the coaching of Mr. Glen Harper, came through with a 2-3- 1 record. He said the Knights played well and to their maximum ability and the players on the bench did a very good job of filling the shoes of the starters in the divisional tournament games at Butte. Under the patient supervision of Coach Richard Dunn, the Sophomore basket- ball team wrapped up its season with an 11-6 record. The team ' s drive combined with Coach Dunn ' s admirable direction enabled the Squires to acquire a winning record this season. Coach Dunn employed a fast-paced game strategy throughout the season. In doing this the Squires were able to outmaneuver their opponents en route to their 11 victories. The Junior Varsity basketball team, under the direction of coach Tom Demmons, closed the season with a win- loss record of 8-10. Confident of his team ' s ability, Coach Demmons said that with a year ' s growth and more experience the boys should be ready for varsity ball. Mr. Demmons said the round-ballers showed definite improvement and towards the end of the season they played better ball as a team. Throughout the season, Coach Demmons used a strat- egy that was based on good defense and ball control. Coach Demmons cited their second loss to Sentinel and their victory over Drummond Varsity as the team ' s best performances. The outstanding wres- tlers for the seasonwere 105-pound Gus Camp- bell who went undefeated with a 16-0-1 record and Mike Sloan wrestling at 188 pounds who went to the state semifinals, where he was de- cisioned by one point, mike ' s seasonal record was 16-3. These inexperienced grapplers will develop in the coming year with more strength and know-how. 77 Senior Mike Sloan was the first Hell- gate wrestler to qualify for state finals in four years. The 185-pound grappler downed Bruce Wilhelm of CM. Russell 10-4 in the semi-final match. Mike placed second in state competition. 78 JUNIOR VARSITY-FRONT ROW: Jon Cusker, Tony Koures, Roger Ol- son, Steve Resner, Stan Jones, Glen Hawley, Tom Blakney. These wres- tlers will be better with more ex- perience and will make an ex- cellent contribution to the var- sity next year. JV Freshman Larry Bicha was the freshman wrestling coach this year. His eager wrestlers finished the season with a 5-5 record. They were not strong as a team, but strong individually. They will do well in the future with the potential they possess. The 1972 runners won fifth at the state meet in Helena. Belinda McDonald and Kathy Nyquist, Hell- gate ' s best runners, battled for top places through- out the season. ' ■' Pride, determination and an outstanding coach led Hell- gate ' s cross country team to the number one spot in the state. The fleet-footed Knights went undefeated during the 1972 season. The varsity squad won all nine meets, including state, by large margins. Hellgate varsity runners swept the first six places, a perfect score, at the Sentinel meet. The junior varsity team had a winning season also. The squad ran perfect scores at the Sentinel meet, the Boze- man meet and the Hellgate-Kalispell-Sentinel Triangular meet. A state trophy was the reward for the rigorous training and undying passion of the 24 runners to win. Senior Bobi Wambach and sophomores Jackie Cheat- ham, Sheena Veitenheimer and Melinda Wolfe quali- fied for state competition by placing in the top 10 in in- dividual events at the divisional meet in Butte. Nine Knight qualifiers for the state meet, were seniors Paul Beaufait, Don Morgan, Dennis Morse, Dave Stang and Bryan Dauenhauer; juniors Bill Murray and Kelly Crisp; sopho- more Shaun McAdams, and freshman John Gogas. Outstanding gymnasts were Beaufait, who totaled 72 points for the season; Stang, who finished second in the side horse event at state and Morgan, who demonstrated his fine quali- ties in his events throughout the year. Students re- sponded to the growing program, but skiing was a fail- ure. Missoula ' s mild winter made the skiing program impossible although 168 boys and girls had signed up. This scene was re-enacted daily 7th period during Halberd class. Staff members discovered there was more to putting out a yearbook than sitting around for 40 minutes every day. The staffers worked hard selling yearbooks for 5 weeks in September and October. As an added incentive a free Ecology button was given with the purchase of every Halberd. Besides selling books the Halberd Staff sold Halloween candy to insure this year ' s Halberd as being the best ever. Halberd With the money in hand a yearbook was in the making. Editor Linda Robbins spent a few days teaching inex- perienced students the fundamentals of producing a yearbook. Layout, cropping, and copy were a few of the basics introduced to new members. The devoted journalists worked long, hard hours (sometimes after school) to send the copy to the printers. By showing such interest in the publication of the paper, the writers ac- quired not only headaches but actual experiences in the field of newspaper work and the doughnut tradition. The doughnut tradition started at Hellgate when one of the first Lance staffs had to work overtime. A soft-hearted person (whose initials are John A. Forssen) bought stale doughnuts for the staff to nibble on while they worked. From then on it has been a favorite Lance staff pastime. 94 ffianr Published semi-monthly at Hell- gate High School, 900 S. Higgins Ave., Missoula, Mont. 59801; Phone: 728-2400, Ext. 86. Being stranded in an inoperable school bus between Missoula and Great Falls was an unexpected highlight for this year ' s drama team. Besides acquiring the finer points of speedy bus evacuation, the members of Hellgate ' s team learned to present a polished performance be- fore an audience. Advisors Virgil Cork and Donald Wulff helped develop the excellence that is essential to Hellgate ' s notable drama tradition of three state championships in the last four years. Throughout the year students placed in all events of competition. The regular team members and other interested students looked forward to the presentation of two student directed plays, T.V. and The Picture in early January. The team also planned to present Evening at the Theatre , a collection of the year ' s outstanding cuttings in drama competition. Drama Team 107 Cindy Biggerstaff and Kathy Salmonson are up at 3 a.m. to trudge onward to the Eureka meet. Speech Team Whether debating the issue of federal funding for secondary education, speak- ing against a house bill on abortion or reading The Littlest Angel , being a member of the speech team was clearly difficult. Working from nine a.m. to five p.m. on Saturdays and seven p.m. to ten p.m. Monday through Thursday nights was not uncommon for Hellgate ' s industrious debating squad. All efforts paid off with the thrill of victory, ex- uberant smiles and the knowledge of being the best. Advisors Susan Rowberry and Patricia Knierim, with a little help from their friends, coached all members to the de- gree of oratorial skill required in stiff speech competition. The speech team improved greatly from previous years, with participants plac- ing in every event at every tournament. Hellgate had the privilege of being host to the state speech and drama meet at the close of the competition year. The Future Homemakers of America organization strives toward individual development of members and achieving the personal goals set by each girl. Future Homemakers of America To accomplish these objectives, mem- bers of Hellgate ' s chapter attended district, state and national meetings. This year Hellgate ' s Karen Kruckeberg was appointed secretary at the district meeting in Corvallis. The group looked forward to the state meeting in March at Billings. To finance these trips FHA sold cookbooks. In the fall, members of the club visited an Opportunity School workshop. As a service project the group sang Christmas carols at local rest homes. Afterwards the girls trooped back to Hellgate for a homemade chili supper. Other service projects were planned for later in the year. Sarris Clouse, candidate for cookie of the year, watches her dreams crumble before her eyes. 112 Improving accuracy in typing, shorthand and other office skills for state competition was the main objective of OEA. Hellgate ' s Patty Merseal was local and state OEA president. OEA money-making projects included selling glitter plaques and candy. Members also had several bake sales. The money was used for sending the girls to state meets and possibly to the district meet in Albur- querque, N.M. Other activities of the club were a Christ- mas Banquet and building a homecoming float. The girls also sent a newsletter to other OEA clubs in the state. Delegations researched their coun- tries and wrote bills that would be beneficial to their country ' s needs. In caucus the bills were amended and in committee they were debated. Model United Nations ' objectives are to provide a student an in-depth study on a foreign country and to feel the frustrations and advantages of being a native of that country. From their re- search students determine how their country will act in a given situation. MUN was Planned for the University of Mon- tana on April 12, 13, and 14. Besides entertaining themselves with children ' s antics, club members found time to collaborate with Sentinel Germans for a German Supper. Hellgate and Sentinel German Clubs also planned a joint Fasching dance (carnival) for latter in the year. Hellgate planned to participate in a weekend German Camp at the Tamarack Resort on See- ley Lake. Hollische Rathaus Gruppe also planned to take part in Hellgate ' s International Spring Banquet. 116 French clubbers lethargically singing for a crowd of foreign- ers.
