CHORUS: We are the future builders. Builders in a band— and we come from Girls State. the best state in the land. We are up and coming progressive. Kind and strong And to our old Girls' State we proudly sing our song. Listening to special speakers, singing around a camp fire, witnessing a real supreme court trial, and taking part in a mock trial were some of the Girls State activities last summer. Girls State, like Boys State, is an all-around encounter with city, county and state government. Girls staters gain experience in campaigning for government offices and in running these offices when elected. Dog catcher, city treasurer, and city attorney as well as lieutenant governor, governor, and chief justice are examples of these offices. Each day started with a flag-raising ceremony and ended with a camp fire which included speeches, drama cuttings, skits, and singing. Three hundred girls from all parts of the state attended Girls State this year. June 6-13. on the Carroll College Campus in Helena Special commendation should be given to Mary Gallagher who just missed Girls Nation (Girls State on a nationwide scale) by three votes. 34 ALTERNATES—Left to right Kathy Kruckeberg. It is. according to its constitution, an honorary organization that has as one of its primary objectives service to a variety of the athletic organizations that represent Hellgate High School. What has it done? A. Throughout the history of Hellgate. the Lettermens Club has helped pay the cost of football, basketball and wrestling. This is a sizable amount each year. B They provide all of the individual trophy awards that are presented at letter award time. C. They have paid for all of the names on all of Hellgate's awarded trophies. For instance, early this fall we paid a bill for the amount of $195.55 for engraving of names on various trophies for both boys Lettermen’s Club and girls. D We have purchased the two-way radio used for sporting, etc. at the football games and other sporting events. E. We have bought the two projectors used to analyze athletic films. F. We have contributed money to cheerleaders for tournament costs. G We have underwritten the costs on athletic banquets throughout the year. Who belongs? Our constitution states that any varsity letter winner in a major sport at Hellgate High School is eligible for membership. Why don't girls belong? I don't really know; they haven't petitioned as yet. LETTERMENS CLUB — Front Row Dennis Morse. Benji Williamson. Bob Herbig. Doug Jones. Matt Campbell. Jeff Powell. Jim Oglesbee. Mark LaTrielle. They were a talented, well-balanced team that asked no quarter and gave none. The Knight defensive unit set a new class AA record in rushing defense by limiting their 9 conference opponents to just under 70 yards per game. The Knights finished with a 7 win, 2 loss conference record which placed them in second place in conference standings. Two heart-breaking losses (by a total of 6 points) denied the Knights the championship. Coach Russ Sheriff Varsity No. no— how many times do I have to tell youi Shoot at the basket!! Not impressed with school spirit, but pleased with the bench result of the team. Coach Russ Sheriff said he felt the 1971-72 Varsity Knights had a very successful regular season Coach Sheriff said he felt the school spirit was on a win-loss basis; that when the team was ahead spirit was good, but when the Knights were behind spirit was poor. He also said he felt the school had no more spirit than in past years. He added, however that spirit at the Hellgate-Sentinel game was good. Coach Sheriff said the Knights had improved on defense and in rebounding. All the players improved, but Mark Rice improved most, he said. Bench strength and the ability to play under pressure were valuable assets for tournament competition. The Knights as a team were mature, and there were few situations in which the team didn't respond under pressure. Through the season the Knights rose in the ranks of the Associated Press power poll to a solid second place, keeping the top-ranked Sentinel Spartans on their mettle. The Knights entered the divisional tournament with an 11-3 conference record and a 16-4 over-all mark. 72 73 JUNIOR VARSITY — From top: Coach Tom Demmons. Darrell Beckwith. Mike Steinberg. The new group, which retained the name Lancettes. performed routines which combined precision drill and modern dance Practices every day during seventh period, and for two hours on Monday and Wednesday nights, were the basis by which girls were chosen to participate in performances. Competition among the girls for positions in routines kept members doing their best to perform well. All of the routines performed by Lancettes were created by one or more members of the group. Often, one girl would demonstrate a move or step she had devised, and the rest of the group would make up the remainder of the routine. The smart-stepping marchers displayed their talents at halftimes of both football and basketball games, and in parades. Although some new-comers had to learn how to play, they were soon competing with the masters. Throughout the year tournaments were staged between the Hellgate and Sentinel Chess clubs. These provided more fresh competition for all participants, plus a greater understanding of the game. Hellgate beat Sentinel by a score of 1 6 Vi games to 3 Vi games in the first tournament played in the 1971-72 school year. A hope both schools shared is that soon these tournaments would come to include the participation of other Montana high schools. CHESS CLUB—Front Row Lee Black. Bill Gilbert. It came in the form of a student Curriculum Committee, brought into existence this year by a Student Council petition. The purpose of the Curriculum Committee is to examine the curriculum at Hellgate and make recommendations to the administration. The Curriculum Committee decided to approach its examination of the total course of study first by examining each department at Hellgate Every other week, a report from each department, consisting of its plans for the future, was presented to the committee members. They then discussed it and added their own ideas and proposals. The writing of a general list of recommendations to be sent to the administration was the final step. In addition to the study of questions about curriculum, a discussion of study halls, homeroom and career education was planned. 125 French Club FRENCH CLUB—Front Row: Pres Ruth Coats Row 2 Gloria Case. Members sang several French Christmas carols and. of course, in no activity is the French cuisine to be neglected. All clubs were invited to taste Buche de Noel, a cake made especially for Christmas. Plans were also made for the International Dinner, a sledding party and a Mardi Gras. Members presented a slightly altered version of “The Night Before Christmas . in which Santa ran into a few problems. First the wheels of his trineo (sled) fell off on his way to distribute his wares. Amidst his journey, his mustache fell off (more than once), and on his way back to the North Pole, his trineo tipped over. (All his goodies were gone, luckily.) Besides participating in the interclub Christmas party. Spanish Club also sponsored a hike through the Rattlesnake Valley in September. In October, members put on a dinner to recruit Espanoles nuevos. Spanish Club also made plans for speakers to relate knowledge of Mexico and the Spanish language. Model United Nations Representatives from high schools all over Montana attended the Model United Nations (MUN) convention in April at the University of Montana. Each student was assigned to a delegation of a certain country. When he went to the convention, he was responsible for knowing enough about his country to represent it in the General Assembly and committee meetings. MUN provided the opportunity for these students to learn about one country in depth, and the position of that country in the complex structure of international relations. Hellgate's delegations this year were from Argentina, Czechoslovakia. Hungary. Iraq, New Zealand. Saudi Arabia. Sierra Leone and Turkey. Zellick has been superintendent of Missoula County High School for two years. He has new educational ideas which are aimed at upgrading the entire system. One idea is a new emphasis on career education which trains students for a preset goal. Other plans of Mr Zellick and his staff are to relieve crowded conditions in Hellgate and Sentinel high schools, upgrade the present curriculum and make accommodations for expected enrollment increases. 134 Mark Jennings Director of Vocational Agriculture Mark Jennings was the first principal of Hellgate High School. He guided the school through its transitional period and continued to run the show when the school became a four-year institution during the 1964-1965 school year He is still active in the administration department as the director of vocational agriculture. Reid E Stevens Director of Personnel Former Vice Principal Reid E. Stevens is currently busy at the Missoula County High School Administration Building As director of personnel. Mr Steven's job is to maintain a competent and intelligent staff within the MCHS district. 135 It's always a pleasure to be able to write for the Hellgate Halberd as I feel we have a truly outstanding yearbook that does an excellent job in capturing the spirit that is Hellgate High School. A yearbook is in essence a history book but I would like to take the liberty and comment on the future instead of the past. We are going to be entering a new era in educational opportunity for the students at Hellgate We hope to be able to give the students more experiences that will better prepare them for the world of work or for furthering their education at either a college or a technical school. Students will spend more time in the community. We want to be able to give students a better foundation from which they can make choices that will affect their future. It is my sincere wish that all of the students at Hellgate High School will take advantage of the truly exceptional educational opportunity that they have Don Lawston Vice Principal Vice Principal Don Lawston came to Hellgate after eight years at Sentinel as counselor and golf coach. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT surrender Be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly clearly;and listen to others, even the dull ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud aggressive persons, thev are vexations to the spirit. IF you compare yourself with others, you may become vain bitter; for always there will be greater lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans, fa Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridicy disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. fa Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are bom of fatigue loneliness. Beyond a wholesome disciphne.be gentle with yourself. la You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees fit the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to vou, no doubt the universe is un- folding as it should. I Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. and whatever your labors 5c aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. FOUND IN OLD SAINT PAUL'S CHURCH. RAL TIMORE.
