Hellgate High School Missoula, Montana There will be time, there will be time To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet; There will be time to murder and create. And time for all the works and days of hands That lift and drop a question on your plate; Time for you and time for me. And time yet for a hundred indecisions, And for a hundred visions and revisions ... T.S. ELIOT 2 Go placidly amid the noise haste. remember what peace there may be in silence. Girls State was a great opportunity ... for learning about government, about people and about citizenship ... for singing songs of patriotism, of protest, of love, and of laughter ... for losing an election but gaining the the experience and knowing the excitement of a campaign ... for sharing and for giving ... for asking and for answering. Early last year, girls from Hellgate attended the 1970 session of Montana Girls State The delegates went to political lectures and conventions at the University of Montana for a week of rewarding experiences and friendships. Waiting for one of the delegates to sneeze are alternates Kathy Cooney, seated, and Sarah Simmons, Vici Cromwell and Eileen Gallagher, from left. John Kefentzis. John Roemer. Cliff Lewis. Ken Holden and Loren Marshall The pace at the Western Montana College campus in Dillon quickened as boys from all over Montana gathered last summer for the annual session of Boys State. Each year a different group of boys is chosen to represent Hellgate in this seven-day experiment in government. From June 7 to June 13 last year these boys rushed to complete their duties as delegates. Division into political parties, election of city, county and state officers, gathering in the assembly hall, eating and sleeping took up every minute of time spent in Dillon, as they learned more about the processes of government. At their Sunday meetings, they also watch the High School Bowl, a program produced by KHQ. a Spokane television station. The club supports the team members and helps to increase their knowledge of facts. Of the nine club members, five were on the team that went to Spokane to match wits with other high school teams in the Northwest 36 f Outstanding Teenagers stand out. Outstanding Teenagers of America All nominees for Outstanding Teenagers of America are selected from the senior class by the faculty. They are chosen on the basis of character, scholarship and citizenship, in and out of school. Nominees are examined again on a state level, and are eligible to win the Governor's Trophy DAR Award For dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Karen Cochran has been chosen recipient of the award given annually by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). All seniors were asked to nominate a senior girl who demonstrated these qualities. The nominations were narrowed down to three and teachers made the final selection. After Karen was chosen she took a test that was to be examined by a state board, along with tests taken by local DAR winners from other high schools, to choose a state DAR award winner. Karen Cochran is presented with her OAR award pin by Mrs. James H. Composed of 33 juniors and only 14 seniors, the squad could not be what is considered a power team. However, several of these juniors already had varsity experience as sophomores. Hellgate's most gratifying wins were over Butte's Bulldogs and Sentinel's Spartans. The Butte win signified the first time Hellgate has ever beaten Butte in football and marked the day when Hellgate had finally defeated every other Class AA football team. The Knights surprised everyone but themselves in their game with talented, senior-laden Sentinel Hellgate scored twice, on an 89-yard power sweep by Benji Williamson and a beautiful 62-yard punt return by Bryan Knight. Mark Rice put the icing on the cake with a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, leaving no one who had witnessed the rivalry in doubt as to which team was the city champion. Two Knights were placed on the Class AA All-State team and both were voted to the first team Senior Cliff Lewis was a first team defensive halfback and junior Benji Williamson was a first team halfback on offense. Senior Dennis Hanson and junior Bryan Knight barely missed being placed on the second team. 66 Bruce Elton Dennis Hanson Cliff Lewis David Means Dick Moore Mike Siegford Max Porter Bruce Stevenson Bruce Stetler Cliff Towe Gary Wolgamott 1970 KNIGHT FOOTBALL TEAM—Front row: Mark Baker. Mike Dahlstrom and Bruce Stevenson. This Is Casey’s Team The 1970 Hellgate football season was quite erratic but extremely interesting from a coaching standpoint. We were an extremely young team by comparison to most teams in the Class AA league. We generally traveled with about 26 of our 33-man squad being composed of juniors. At times during the season we were starting 9 of the 11 defensive positions with juniors. With so few game-tested veterans it took a great deal of personnel shuffling to finally establish our squad. This was especially true of our defensive unit. Inexperience at the end and cornerback positions cost us dearly in the Billings Senior and Helena games. A couple of big plays and an inconsistent offense cost us the Billings West game. Winning that game would have placed us in a tie for second place in the Class AA conference instead of a tie for fifth place. This is indicative of the closeness of the bulk of the teams in the conference. It was topsy-turvy all year with only Kalispell showing winning consistency. Our season finished with an extremely good flavor as our defensive team certainly rose to the occasion and shut out the Sentinel Spartans, as Benji Williamson and Bryan Knight, our two fine running backs, broke big touchdown plays, and the talented toe of Mark Rice added two extra points and a 35- yard field goal to give us a sweet 17-0 victory. This marks the third straight year that we have kept the 'Bugs Mug trophy in our show case. $ O-JjT Ctd-AJLy 69 Downs Poor Knight blockers topple the Spartan defense to spring Benji Williamson loose on his 89-yard touchdown run. Spartans Bryan Knight (32) breaks this tackle, only to find a lone Spartan cornerback waiting for the kill . . . The Spartan defensive line shudders as Mark Rice attempts a field goal. As an individual sport it takes neither team work nor fancy technical maneuvers This sport relies upon effort and will to run 2 miles and across the finish line The 1970 Cross Country season was a building year for the Knights. There were three seniors, four juniors, two sophomores, and five freshmen. The team that ran in the state meet consisted of two seniors, two juniors, and two sophomores. They finished 7th in the state, but were only 9 points out of 4th. We are looking forward to next year! Boys Cross Country Boys' Cross Country—Front Row. Ron Watt. Kevin Randles. Gerald Zeig. Running 1 Vi miles over rough ground and hills takes will and determina- tion. Keeping up a continually running pace to the finish is punishing. All 16 girls on the Hellgate team gave a great deal of time to their sport. Practice was after school and sometimes on weekends. Oregon, to his native Montana to take over the big job of running the three million dollar a year business of the Missoula County High School system He found overcrowded buildings and taxpayers unwilling to vote the money for another building He looked at the curriculum and decided it needed some changes; chief among them was placing an increasing emphasis on vocational subjects. He considered the problem of overcrowding and said it might be necessary to have complete split shifts. He faced the task of getting to know all the 200 or so staff members and about 5.000 students of the system, and still took time to talk to a Halberd representative about his job. The Halberd was at one time the distinctive weapon of the sergeant. However, it also happens to be the name of your yearbook, if you haven’t noticed. Many a late knight, the staffers wished they had such a weapon with which to dispose of themselves. But no such luck. This outstanding publication was created in 1965. shortly after the founding of Hellgate The action was necessary because Sentinel took everything with it when it left this wonderful building, including the yearbook's name, the newspaper's name, and the kitchen sink After two years of skepticism on the part of the student body, the yearbook finally caught the attention of the serfs Now it is one of the biggest attractions in our little castle, and one of the best in the kingdom of Montana 227 Thank You, 1971 Patrons Albert Ham Photography 1205 S. However, he has always stressed the importance of maintaining the purpose of journalism: complete and accurate coverage of events. Although he is a demanding and exacting teacher, he possesses an effusive rapport with his students. His interest in them extends beyond the limits of strict student-teacher relationships. He cares about each student as an individual. With respect and gratitude, this staff and former staff members dedicate the 1971 Halberd to Mr. John Forssen. Accuracy Loyalty 238 239 0,
