The I960 BITTERROOT staff dedicates this book to Spartan Spirit. To symbolize this, the theme is taken directly from ancient Greek art. Since the Greeks excelled in pottery making, vase painting became one of their main forms of expression, superseded only by architecture and sculpture. During the seventh and sixth centuries B.C. the Greeks developed what is known as the black figure vase paint- ing technique, where the figures were done primarily in black glaze on the natural clay background. The vase paintings always told a story. It may have been a battle, an athletic contest, or an ancient legend but in any case it was illustrated with restrained dignity and superb design. The art work throughout the I960 BITTERROOT is based upon this technique. I
