’59 BITTERROOT PRESENTS The BITTERROOT staff of 1959 presents SEASONS for you . . . During the AUTUMN we gain new life, we leave our summer experien- ces behind and begin a new school year with an open mind. The WINTER is bleak and cold. All things look to the future—to the growing period of spring and the growing period of life. In SPRING a new life commences. Not only for the seniors, but also for the plants, trees, flowers, and many living things around us. As we present this book to you, we would like to extend our thanks to Mr. Ernst Peterson of Hamilton, for his beautiful pictures found on the division pages. May we ask that you take special note of our advertisers, without whom this annual could not be fully realized. It develops individuals who can be leaders or followers, according to their time, place, and circumstance. It is. then, the best tradition to provide high schools that will minister to, and develop, the talents of all youth, including the talents of the gifted, as fully and as rapidly as is consistent with their social and physical maturity. However, there is also a strong need for men and women whose specialty is un- derstanding our society and how it works. Survival in this age may be staked on science, but the building of peace calls for knowledge, insights and abilities of many kinds. Missoula County High School, like so many outstanding comprehensive high schools throughout the land, has demonstrated that it can and does provide the necessary experience, stimulation, training and background needed by both the academically talented youth, and the youth destined to become a member of a responsible genera- tion for tomorrow. THESPIANS Thespians, the drama organization of MCHS, completed their second year as members of the National Thespian Society. Their productions included Three On a Bench, January Thaw, The Cantata, and assisting the music department with The Fortune Teller operetta. Officers were Kirk Buis, President; Bruce Sievers, Vice-President; Judy Blegen, Sec- retary; and Ann Avery, Treasurer. Mr. David Andrew was the sponsor. Three on a Bench, a one-act Thespian production, featured Dick Ainsworth, Bev Scott, Ann Avery, and Bill Chumrau. Two of the leads were taken by Charles Bryson who portrayed Sandor, a gypsy musician, and Judy Blegen who portrayed Musette, a gypsy fortune teller. Irma, of the opera ballet, and Captain Ladislaus. of the Royal Hussars, were played by Joanna Lester and Ed Blackler. OPERETTA The Fortune Teller, an operetta with music by Victor Herbert, was presented by a cast of nearly 100 music and drama students. The excellent acting and singing, the colorful costumes and stage settings, combined with the accompaniment of the orchestra, produced four sparkling performances. The plot of The Fortune Teller revolved around a lottery ticket belonging to the king. The ticket was lost and in the search for it an exciting plot developed only to find that the queen had abolished the royal lottery. The operetta, the first at MCHS for two years, was directed by Mr. Neil Dahlstrom and Mrs. Greta Seibel. Mr. David Andrew was the technical director. Dennis Craig as Fresco, the ballet master, Carole Stockner as Mme. Pompo Prima Donna of the opera, and Doug Chaffey as Count Berezowski added comical air to the production. Musette leads the gypsy chorus in an arousing gypsy melody. m, a There they found the babe, lying in a manger. CANTATA The Adoration, by George B. Nevin, under the direction of Mr. David Andrew, was presented to the public in two evening performances during the Christmas season. An afternoon performance was given to the Freshmen. Portraying the event were a host of angels; Bev Scott as Mary; Bruce Sievers, Joseph; Unda Beavers, Gabriel; Kirk Buis, innkeeper; Roger Smith, Don Krumm, and Jim Rogers, kings; Denny Dodge, Jerry Cunningham, and Eric Fiedler, shepherds; and Shirley Sorenson, Joni Carpenter, Kathie Alhey, and Margit Knudsen as cnerubs. Director 164 PUb%AtI°N S KOPEE The Kopee, is the literary magazine of MCHS, and is com- piled annually by a staff selected each year for their skill in journalism. The Kopee, derived from an Indian word meaning 'owl,” is comprised of short stories, poems, and essays. The articles for the Kopee are selected by tne staff from material submitted by English classes. Kopee sales, which are competitive, are conducted each spring in English classes. Those on this year's staff included: Diane Griffin and Teddi Shallenberger, Senior co-editors; Ruth Hallford, Junior editor; Anne Sappenfield, Sophomore editor; John Bankson, Freshman editor; Philene Rinderknecht and Diane Boyer, art editors; and Casey McFarland, typist. Advisors were: Miss Helen Fink, Mr. George Gogas, and Mr. Mel Schell. Diane Griffin and Teddi Shallenberger, Senior edit- ors, starting their year’s work. Standing: Miss Fink, Mr. Gogas, and Mr. Schell. Jeon Davis, editor, laying out one of the 208 pages. Co-sponsors of the 1959 Bitterroot were Mr. Gogas and Mr. Schell. BITTERROOT The Bitterroot staff emerged from deep in the heart of the Bitterroot Jungle in an attempt to persuade the students of MCHS to buy their Bitterroots. A total of 1,650 students and faculty members responded to this wise advice. Display cases and a dance, the Jungle Jump, climaxed Bitterroot week. Deadline! became a familiar word as the staff worked continually toward the finished book. In an attempt to modernize the book, three colored division pages, featuring duo- tones and tint blocks, were added. In contrast to the brightness of the 1958 annual cover, a more subtle tone of a rich brown and black emphasizing a Spartan head in mosaic was created. A sixteen-page supplement, to be issued in the fall of 1959, was another addition. As you look through your Bitterroot, stop for a minute here and there; the looks of happiness, anxiety, and fun in every face should remind you of your part in that, which was Missoula High for '59.
