Introduced in conjunction with the Arts and Crafts depart- ment in 1913, home economics has grown into a separate de- partment with four teachers. A kindergarten for pre-school age children is conducted each year. The regular classes pro- vide beginning and advanced work in cooking, sewing, and home planning. The department is headed by Mrs. Gladys Van Vorous. Ann Kolppa, senior, home ec student, serves at the faculty tea. Frosh whip up mud pies.

fommoAciaL From one teacher in one room in 1913, the commercial department has grown to its pres- ent size with a faculty of six teachers and a number of rooms. Typing, shorthand, clerical practice, bookkeeping, retailing, and general business are the various courses offered in the com- mercial department. Many advanced typ- ing and shorthand students have part-time jobs in downtown business firms. Retailing students also take part in this work program, which is under the supervision of Walter Griffin, department chairman. An alert bookkeeping class absorbs facts and figures.

JLanqjuaqsiA With emphasis on the spoken language, French and Spanish students learn many common phrases and sentences during their course of study. Latin, the other language offered in the department, stresses the written aspect. The language department offering German was started in 1908. Later German was dropped and French, Spanish, and Latin were included. The customs and ways of life of the countries are studied as well as the grammatical phase of all three languages.
