The equipment which is in present use is certainly more effective than that used in the early 1900's when the department was organized. The chemistry smells are eliminated by a fan, but nothing can be done to elimi- nate the age-old trick of putting frog legs down girls' necks. Millard Peter- son heads this department. From the time the mathematics department was organized in 1917, it has grown from one teacher to a staff of eight today. As MHS has progressed to the 50 year mark, more courses have been added until now intermediate and advanced algebra, and plane and solid geometry are offered, in addition to the usual math pro- gram. Trigonometry and algebra are college level courses. The geometry students decorate the school windows with geometric designs at Christmas. Miss Gertrude Clark heads this department.

Worthen SociaL SiudjuiA. Mr. Watt lectures on Social Studies to his captivated class. Since two years of social studies including American History arel required for graduation, the MCHS social studies department offers] a variety of courses for students. Social studies was first offered to MCHS students in 1906. The department was formed in 1917. From that time the department has grown to its present size with branches in both schools. Freshmen may take social studies which is a general citizenship course. World History is offered to sophomores and a one semester course in geography is open to sophomores and juniors. Contemporary problems, a course concerned with present day social and economic prob- lems, is offered to seniors. One of the projects in these classes was to hold a mock national election for the students in the fall. Miss Agnes L. Brown is the chairman of the department. Student gives report on Panama Canal to American History class. 16
