MISSOULA-27, ANACONDA-7 ln the curtain raiser of the 1953 football season for Mis- soula, the Spartans and the Copperheads fought their annual battle with the Spartans ending up on the bright side of the game. The Spartans started the scoring in the first quarter and then hit pay dirt in each of the succeeding periods. lim Pickens was one of the main reasons for the Spartan Win, as he was di- rectly responsible for -twenty points. Bray and 'Vtfeishaar also played a big part in the fray. Anaconda's lone tally came in the third period. The try for the extra point failed. Neither team was able to score until the last few seconds of the game, when the Bruins tried a despera- tion pass that was good for eightyeeight yards and a touchdown. The attempted kick for the extra point was low and wide. There was only enough time left in the game for Twin Falls to kick off before the final gun sounded. Pickens and lohnson played outstand- ing ball for the Spartans. 96

BUTTE-6 In the first game of the AA Conference, the Spartans had to come from behind in the final minutes of the game on a pass from Prarnenko to Schmautz to tie the Dulldogsi This was the climax of a series of passing and running plays which started deep in Missoula territory. The Bulldogs' lone tally came on the t first play of the game when they ma- ' ' neuvered a sleeper play. Butte threat- ened twice later in the game but the local boys dug in: Bob Scott intercepted a pass on the Spartan ten, and Pete Fthinehart recovered a fumble on the Missoula eighteen. However, even the enthusie astic support the team received was not enough to give them better than a draw, the game being turned into a hard- fought defensive battle. Both teams threatened to score, the Spartans push' ing to the Braves' six on a sustained drive in the second quarter, and the Flathead County boys driving to the Missoula eleven in the fourth quarter, only to be thwarted in their efforts by an inspired Spartan de- fensive team. Franklin and Tennant were mainstays of the Flathead attack, with Pickens again coming through as a work- horse for the Spartans. Second Team Guard 97 I
