Missoula started the scoring on a basket by Borchers and continued to pile up a margin of 14 to 3 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter the Hawks scored their first field goal of the game on a flip by Nieskens. The high scorer of the Big l6 race, Wes landt, also hit for one field goal that period. Pete Rhine- hart did a fine job of holding landt down as he collected only three field goals throughout the game. Bon Borchers was the mainstay for the Spartans as he was high scorer with I2 points. Powell and Reber followed close behind with E F3 1 5 x 1 3 S if K2 Qi .. if 1? ti E MISSOULA 59-LEWIS AND CLARK 52 The Spartans had to come from behind in the last three minutes of the game to pull this one out of the fire. Lewis and Clark held a three point ,advantage at the start of the fourth period. Boy Bray hit the basket that tied it up at 48 all to start the rally. lim Powell started hitting as the Spartans outscored the team from Spokane eleven to four in the last minutes of play Powell and Bray were high for the Mis- soula team as they hit 27 and lO points respec- 10 points each. The Missoula bench was one UVGIY- again cleared of all players. W lj L if MISSOULA 62-HELENA 49 f' Helena Bengals, last year's Big l6 confer- 0 ence winner and state champions, came to Mis- soula for the first of two games, the first to be if played in Missoula and the second in Helena. gif s The Bengals started strong and outplayed the ' Spartans in the first quarter but from that time f-2 on it was nip and tuck until midway through the last period as Bob Anderson started hitting on 3455-K ' side shots. MISSOULA 56-GREAT FALLS 33 ln a return engagement on their home court the Spartans ran wild as they romped over the Bisons for the second time in two weeks, Mis- soula took the lead by three points at the end of the first quarter. At the end of the half the Spar- tans held a 15 point advantage and then con- tinued to increase their lead as the game grew older. Powell was tied up most of the night and was only able to make 15 points, Borchers and Anderson were hitting the bucket too as they dropped in 13 and 10 points respectively. MISSOULA 63-NORTH CENTRAL 47 ln the first game of a two-day tournament at Kalispell the Missoula Spartans defeated the North Central team for the second time this sea- son. Although these games don't count for the Big 15 championship they give the players ex' perience for the games that count. Rhinehart was again a whiz at stopping the opponents.
