MISSOULA-14 BUTTE-0 The first half of the championship game was a fairly even defensive battle with the Missoula Spartans getting the best of it. During the first quar- ter the playing was con- fined to midfield with neither team being able to gain. lt was in the last few minutes of this period that the Bulldogs got their only first down of the game. ln the second quarter the Spartans started rolling as Pickens and Weishaar drove to the Bulldogs' l2-yard line, where they lost the ball on downs. Butte fumbled on their own 13 where Bob Scott recovered for Mis' soula. This drive ended as Park of Butte in- tercepted a pass in the end zone Butte was forced to kick and the Spartans passed again with Stack intercepting on lVflSSOlllCI'S 33. Butte received the open- ing kickoff of the second half but was forced to kick Pickens and Weishaar again drove down the field but were stopped by a penalty as they reached the 15-yard line. Butte was unable to gain and was forced to kick. Mis- soula started its first scoring drive as Pickens, Weishaar, and Sellars brutally burst through the right side of the Butte line, The tally came in the first few minutes of the last stanza with Pickens rolling the final two yards. Butte car- ried the kickoff to its own 39, but was -forced ta kick as it couldnt gain against the strong Missoula defense.
