Room 2 itself was full of people cramming pictures and layouts into envelopes which they finally brought, panting, to Sandy, who managed to always smile tremendous, encouraging, cheerful smiles when she asked how's it going, and who somehow appeared calm in the midst of bedlam, and confident that we were actually going to get done. With an eye to next year's sea- son, the coaches had done some reorganizing, drawing much on younger players. Making a fast start, the aggressive Highlander eleven shellacked Hoover, 21 to O-the first Helix victory over the Cardinals in our history. The Green Wave then pro- ceeded to knock over the highly rated Chula Vista Spar- tans and El Cajon Braves. Of the next five games, three were lost by one touchdown. The last match of the sea- son, with our traditional rival, Grossmont, left the musket in the hands of the Foothillers in a tight game. Taking into consideration that Helix was the smallest school and the youngest team in the Metro League, the Highlanders chalked up a good record by ending up in the middle. With so many juniors getting varsity experience this year, next season's team should be a top contender for Metro honors. Quarterbac'king was the biggest problem, since both Ray Straka and Frank Bardacke had to cope with in- iuries, but Mike McGhee, playing in the key spot when needed, did fine work. Tony Carrasco, considered the best halfback in the League, was also hampered all season with iniuries, and didn't see much action. Brian Funk took over, and his effective playing earned him the title of Metro League Best Sophomore. Outstanding seniors up on the line were Bart Roggen- sack, Don Taylor, and Sam Sharp, and in the backfield, Buddy Martin and Frank Bardacke. Wally Hartwell, Bob Mackey, Don Sarantos, Neil Timm, Earl Hays, Earl Moore, Roger Maranda, Jim Dent, Mike McGhee, and Don John- son were notable iuniors that will return to the varsity squad next year. Brian Funk, John Pottinger, and Jim White all distinguished themselves, and were the only sophomores playing varsity football. Seniors playing in their final football season achieved distinction as fine athletes: Monnie Beatty, Frank Bar- dacke, Jim Blair, Marc Clark, Tony Carrasco, Henry Cas- tellano, Phil Fidler, Bob Fountain, Dave George, Jim Gundry, Buddy Martin, Gordie Nicholson, Bart Roggen- sack, Mike Sandlin, Sam Sharp, Don Taylor, and Vern Villarino. Jim Bowers, Wally Hartwell, Don Taylor, Bill Raaka and Don Weist, our starting men seem to be outstanding rebounclers and good shots. Hartwell and Bowers, juniors, have great hustle on the court and should be challengers for Metro League honors in the coming season. The second team also has proved itself in many situations. As of this date, Coach Robert Divine has great hope for our chances in the Metro League. Under the excellent coaching of Coach Divine and Coach Gillespie, a student coach, Helix should have many fine games in the coming year. Coach Gillespie Bowers dribbles past a Sun Diegiun. Here, however, is a pre-season look at what we think are our Metro League possibilities. Bart Roggensack, Tony Carrasco, and Ray Straka, three fine pitchers, will be leading the team in their fielding attack. Mike McGhee will make up the other end of the battery. He should be one of the outstanding catchers in the league. Wayne Hay, Ken Nasife, and Vern Villarino will make up our infield attack. Other hopefuls in Coach Dick Gorrie's line-up, and the completion of the team, are Don Taylor, Ray Koenig, Bill Raaka, Bill Turpie, Gordon Nicholson, Frank Bardacke, Jim Gundry, and John Lippert. All the players mentioned have gained valuable experience playing summer ball which will certainly contribute to a successful season. ln the last two years Tony Carrasco, Don Taylor, and Bart Roggensack have contributed greatly to the Highlander team and should be outstanding con- tenders for All-Metro honors. Several of this year's Varsity Baseball team will be returning next year: Mike McGhee, Wayne Hay, Ray Koenig, Ken Nasife and John Lippert. The strong Junior Varsity team will join these players for added depth. At this deadline, several trackmen appear promising in their respective events: in the high iump, Clayto-n Raaka and Don Max- ted, in the broad jump, Tom Brown and Earl Moore, in the shot-put, John Pottinger and John Roese, hurdles, Bud Martin. Top sprinters will probably be Bud Martin, Chuck Hahn, and Bob Vezza, middle dis- tance and long distance runners, Bob Foun- tain, Don Jonas, Alan Gale, and Dick Gil- dersleeve. Robert Divine, in his fourth year as athletic director, coached the varsity basketball and Cross Country teams. Dick Gorrie continued as head varsity football and baseball coach, while brother Doug Gorrie served as varsity tennis and defensive football coach. This was Warren Vinton's sec- ond year as varsity wrestling and line football coach, and Dave Lefever worked on as iunior varsity basketball and track coach. Ralph Chaplin continued coaching the junior varsity football team and the golf team. Fred Wadsworth, head track coach, was also busy with the swimming, iunior varsity cross country, and frosh-soph basketball teams. Bill White took over this year as junior varsity baseball coach, and Lou Regnier, our trainer, worked many long hours keeping our teams in top shape.
