We have advanced both, in stat- ure and wisdom through new challenges and interests. Each year came and went quickly lead- ing us finally to this time of gradu- ation. Looking ahead to the future we see opportunityp looking back we picture the wonderful times which were ours. As the class of '58 departs, Helix shall always have a special place in all Our Hearts. Nfg 1 zartg .-I V F 1 I 1 41' - i' 417 .1 9-N Qeniur btatistics When we entered the halls of Helix High School in the Fall of 1954, we caught our first glimpse of high school life from the A.S.B. President and the Administration. We were intro- duced to our counselor Mr. Wallis who was to guide us in our following four years. Later that week, we were officially welcomed by the entire student body at an assem- bly and Hello Hop. The girls were honored at a Big and Little Sister Tea, which was held in the Girls' Recreation Room. Class officers were elected without delay and included Don Bas- sett, Presidentp Paul Preiss, Vice-President, Kay Farnham, Secretary, and Sue Bobby, Treasurer. A constitution was originated and written which would be followed by all Freshman Classes to come. At the close of the year we elected the following Sophomore Class Officers: Mary Con- lee, President, Roger Moulton, Vice-President Pro Tempore, Kay Farnham, Secretary, and Sue McDonald, Treasurer. Several committees were organized to function on behalf of our class. These important committees were the Ring Committee and the Sophomore Class Council. It was decided that we change our rings to silver with a green stone instead of the usual gold. In place of the Emerald Ball, we sponsored a Barnyard Bop, which was enioyed by all who attended. Our Junior year opened with the officers Phil Hutchens, President, Diane Rider, Vice- President, Sue McMasters, Secretary, and Barbara Pawlowski, Treasurer, taking charge. We paid our Junior Dues of 53.50 which enabled us to have a party at Big Oak Ranch. This party was a substitute for the Prom, due to the size of the Senior Class. Several of our classmates were honored by being selected as Tartan Bearers, Torch Bearers, or Ushers for the graduating class. We will always remember our Junior year because we took five Metro League champion- ships in sports. We said goodbye not only to the graduating class, but also to our classmates and friends who were going to the new Mount Miguel High School. At the close of our Junior year we were anticipating the fact that we would be Seniors at last! The officers were elected for our Senior year, who were Roger Moulton, President, Bar- bara Pawlowski, Vice-President, Judy Payne, Secretary, and Jody Bagrie, Treasurer. All of our Senior Events and Activities throughout the year were very successful. The sorrow of our loss in football to Mount Miguel was brightened by an excellent and enioyable Homecoming Dance. Queen JoAnn Edwards reigned at the dance graced by her four lovely attendants. More money was brought into our treasury by the memorable Senior Play: You Can't Take lt With You. A tradition was added which gave Seniors the privilege of leaving five min- utes early from assemblies. All the Senior activities we had looked forward to for such a long time were concluded by the wonderful prom which will always be remembered. The realization of these experi- ences seemed far off four years ago. But now as realities, they become happy years and cherished memories. When he arrives with his stuffy parents the family is encountered in the midst of ballet dancing, painting, modeling in a toga, and fireworks. These individualistic amusements bring drastic repercussions which prove ex- tremely entertaining and worthwhile to watch. X CAST OF CHARACTERS Penny Sycamore .............. It was a time when all Seniors en- ioyed an afternoon of fun and play. Banquet Our Banquet was held on March 28, in the Venetian Room of the U.S. Grant Hotel. The dinner consisted of turkey and the trimmings. We were inspired by an entertaining speaker and several members of our class. 'N A-X XJ N, I Eacralaurzate Serbia: Baccalaureate Service was held the Sunday before graduation on June 8. lt was unique in that it started in late afternoon and was a candlelight serv- ice. The speaker was Dr. Livingston minister of the First Presbyterian Church. Svenint from On May 29, our Senior Prom was held at the La- fayette Hotel. The romantic setting was enhanced by our theme Rhapsody in Blue. With tired feet we carried ourselves to the After-Prom. This evening will always be a memorable occasion. ,........ l f N f V, 0,1 KQXJJ yoj ' 1' 'N 1 r W , 'f A M ,i 5 . VH M Void! uk ,fi U . if' X' ii i 1 if ii I V 1 W X' x 'ii ' V J' If VA' J' L mv . Jfuuthall THE YEAR IN RETROSPECT This was a year of surprises for the Bonny Fightin' Scots. Our school split with Mount Miguel lost us many valuable players, but in spite of this separation, our spirit was at the highest possible peak for the situation dealt us by the Grossmont High School District. We started the season with a 0 to 0 tie with Sweetwater in the Metro League Carnival at the Aztec Bowl. In pre-league play, our record was one win over El Centro 25-19 and two losses to Freemont and Oxnard. This left our future in question due to the fact that the teams we played could not be rated in comparison with the Metro teams to be faced in coming games. Our first league game with El Caion gave us a renewed hope for the future. We beat them on the Helix field 20 to O. Then came the Spartan wave and our valiant Scots went down to a disappointing but predicted defeat. We fought hard but lost 32-19. Next came the biggest game of the season, the Sweetwater Red Devils. In this game, Keith Hall plunged over for two touchdowns, Ron Palermo intercepted 3 passes and returned one of them to the Red Devils' goal. Our best game of the season ended with Helix 25-Sweetwater 6. Next was our homecoming game with Mount Miguel. On the first play from scrimmage, swift Helix back Bill Ernest ran for a TD! The game was close all the way, but the Matadors eked out by 21 to 19. Our final game was the traditional battle for the Musket between the Helix Highlanders and the Grossmont Foothillers. This was our biggest upset of the season. We were ahead by a comfortable lead the first half, but the Fighting Foothillers broke loose in the second half and took home the Musket by a score of 46 to 25. We ended the season' with a 3 win 5 loss record. We beat the first place team and the cellar team but the rest are better left forgotten. Here, nevertheless, is our team's standing as of this writing. Our pre-league play left us in somewhat of a quandary as our hoopsters lost both games in the Kiwanis tournament, but bounced back to take two out of three games in the Fillmore tournament. This gave us third place in the tournament against a very tough field of competition. In our first league game, we emerged victorious over a very competent El Cajon team, aided by sharpshooter John WibIe's 32 points. The final score was a decisive 72-44. This gave us renewed hope that the Metro title could be won by the loyal laddies in green and gray. As of this writing, however, it seems that ou'r team will improve immensely with practice and experience, and will be a leading contender for the Metro title. With a little good luck and the right breaks, our team will be in there fighting, iust as all our warriors have in the past and will be in the future.
