flqlzland fllylzhyhfs 195657 marks the srxth and most successful year of exlstence of Hellx Hlgh School The Hlghlanders started the year off rxght wlth one of Hellxs honored tradltlons Freshman Welcome Week At the end of th1s week the Hello Assembly was held at which the freshmen paxd homage to therr school and entertamed the upperclassmen On the twenty f1rst of September all loyal Hlghlanders turned out to watch our great team start 1ts cl1mb up the ladder of success ln the Metro League Football Carnlval Also makxng therr 1n1t1al appearance were the Flag Corps led by Barbara Pawlowskl Pom Pon Corps headed by Julle Coates and the Green and Srlver Band led by drum major Sunny Donell and IW1l'l1Ilg majorette Kay Blessmg An added attractron to our band th1s year were our two band flag twlrlers Judy Devero and Sondra Perklns The hlghllght of October was our vlctory over Grossmont ln the trad1t1onal r1val game for the old Musket Helix students celebrated thlS vlctory at the annual Musket Ball ln the Green Room Myrtle T1ll1ng was selected by the Senior Class to relgn as queen over all the homecommg act1v1t1es Prlncesses 1n her court were MIIZI Laughlin Jan McRae Pat Sandaker and Bonnle Slaton The crownlng took place durlng half tlme at the Hellx El Cajon football game Later 1n the evenmg the Queen and her court were honored at a dance sponsored by the Semor Class One of the most lmpresslve events was the annual Amerlcan Herrtage Pageant A dlfferent type of settmg known as central stag1ng was used and xt proved to be very effectlve The f1rst semester came to an end wlth the Helrx Hlgh Football Squad w1nn1ng the Metro League Champronshrp Because of the1r outstandlng playmg abllxty many squad members made the SC IF Team After Chrlstmas vacatlon the sport turned to Basketball Agaln Hehx possessed a champlon Shlp team They f1n1shed the season w1th seven w1ns and one loss Th1s resulted 1n a t1e for the Metro League Champronshlp wrth Sweetwater who boasted the same record Th1s years senlor play Death Takes A Hollday proved to be the best ever cast Playmg the lead roles were Denms Adams and Deanna Dunbar As 1n prevrous years Hehx had an excrtmg Nomlnatrng Conventxon Candldates Don Bassett and Roger Moulton were chosen by the delegates for student body presldent and Kay Farnham and Phrl Hutchens were chosen for the offlce of vrce presldent Th1s student conventxon IS modeled after our natlonal conventlons In the weeks followmg the halls were decked wlth the VRIIOUS posters of students runmng for A SB offrces Chmaxmg the electrons was the Inaugural Ball At th1s annual dance the new student body offrcers were formally announced and mstalled At the end of the electlon season, approxlmately one hundred twenty f1V6 retmng and newly elected offlcers partlclpated ln the Cuyamacca Leadershlp Conference At th1s conference ldeas were dlscussed and exchanged on act1v1t1es and problems for the coming year One of the hlgh pomts rn the years act1v1t1es was the Hellx Lassres Hula Hop Hrghlanders helped to carry out the theme by wearlng lers sarongs and shlrts of gay Hawauan prlnt Tom Mlchael Ed Walker and Dave Gallagher played the lead roles ln the ASB play Chlcken Every Sunday Everyone who attended the play agreed that It was a great success Hellxs musrc department th1s year undertook the task of producmg the Broadway muslcal Brradoon Hrghland chorr members wlth lead roles were Ellrs Edenfleld Suzanne Reamo Art Bunch Karen Pltchford and Herb Sands On our trad1t1onal Hoot Mon Day all loyal Hlghlanders helped to celebrate Hellxs slxth brrth day by taklng an actlve part 1n the days festrvmes Carnlval type booths manned by varlous Hellx organlzatlons provrded a hollday atmosphere Half of the proflts made were donated to a worthwhxle project Toward the end of the school year Senrors attended such affa1rs as the Semor Banquet Semor Party and Baccalaureate On the1r annual Dltch Day the Semors had fun ln the land of make belleve, Dlsneyland Hrghlrghtmg these act1v1t1es was the Semor Prom whrch was held at the Mlsslon Valley Country Club The theme chosen for th1s formal dance was Tropxcal Paradlse A mov1e and breakfast followed The years actlvltxes came to an end when these Highlanders clad ln robes of green and whlte marched to the muslc of Pomp and Clrmumstance As tlme marches on the scenes ID the drama of Helxx Hlgh School w1ll change but the splnt of those departlng Hxghlanders w1ll always remam . . . . , . . 1 - at 11 1 - - 1 ' 1 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 1 . . . . .
