O'ZEOiJ'O'Z An annual is the pictorial record of special mo- mentsp moments of exhilerated excitement at a foot- ball game, of intellectual fatigue near semester ex- ams, of careless freedom at 3:45 Friday, and of sat- isfaction at the aWard's assembly. We, the staff of this Vigilante, hope We have included the important and eliminated the unneces- sary. We feel the beauty of our state has been an intrinsic part in the development of our character: that the ephemeral moods and expressions of our land have become a personal possession for each of us. For this reason We have chosen Montana as our theme. Mighty, Majestic, Magnetically Appealing, a poem by George W. McVey, excellently pictures the scenic wonders one wishes to remember. This quality has made us choose this writing as the basis of our theme. THE 1961 VIGILANTE STAFF 'Un 95:-Lcficczfion U This year's annual is dedicated to a man every- one who attends Helena High knows . . . Chuck Iohnson, past Math and Chemistry teacher, Frosh coach, Intramural director, present assistant princi- pal, and friend of all. Mr. Iohnson has spent much of his life as aschool official or teacher and has en- joyed his work. Anyone who has any sort of prob- lem can usually be found seeking the consolation of Mr. Iohnson. So it is that we of the Vigilante staff dedicate this 1961 Annual to a man We greatly ad- mire. Under the guidance of our outstanding officers, Dru Dougherty, Art Hulett, Karen Baucus, Ilene Barney, and Peter Lanthorn, our class began to pave its Way to a successful future. The sophomore dance Magic Moments, sparkled with success. Ours had the biggest turn out of any sophomore dance held at HHS. Emme Austin and Shirley Hart got many admiring stares from envious juniors and seniors at the Vigilante Coronation. The athletic ability of the class was represented by varsity players Ken Leland, Chuck Green, and lim Whipple. Our class, also, boasted ten girls to be accepted in club, an achievement seldom obtained by a sophomore. As Iuniors, we continued our outstanding record of accomplishments. Ours was the first class to participate in the American Field Service program. Dru Dougherty was selected to represent the United States in Argentina. Mary Kay McEacheron spent the summer in Germany. The fabulous Iunior Prom unfolded all the splendor of Arabian Nights. Everyone formed a procession behind our officersp lim Whipple, Peter Lan- thorn, Shirley Hart, Marilyn Gibson, and Russ Williams, for the Grand March. We were Well represented at Girls' State by the many abilities of Karen Baucus, Nicole Eveland, and Mary Lou Bieri. Iudy Buckland and Nikki Eveland dazzeled the spectators at the coro- nation. We were proud of our glittering candidates. The wild and Woolly Senior Barn Dance was a tremendous kickoff for our last year. Butch Nachtsheim was crowned Queen Bruceve after competing with Western beauties Char Rudio, Connie Bardon, and Sally Neath. Of our three beautiful queen candidates, Emme Austin, Nikki Eveland, Claudia Cartens, Emme Austin was crowned. A regal personality, Emme ruled the school for a year and a day with charm and efficiency. Karen McKindree and Zigmundt Smigaj were finalists in the National Merit tests, truly an honor for our class. Thanks go to our officers, Russ Williams, Butch Natchsheim, Sally Kind, Bill Roberts, and Peter Lanthorn, for making this last year the best ever. , Our excellent Honor Roll and our accomplishments in all fields labels us as being an exceptional classy a class that HHS Will miss. We will miss HHS, also. We progressed from inexperienced sophomores to Wiser Iuniors, and we are enthusiastic about making our Senior year the best ever. Again We claimed the honor of having a member of our class in the Royal Court: pretty Lee Morgan Was elected Princess Vigilante. The boys proved themselves in sports, and many Iunior boys earned letters in the five major sports. We elected three active girls and three versatile boys as delegates to Girl's State and Boy's State. The boys, elected were Bob Coltrane, Ierry Cooper, Bob Hoffman, Kent Kushar, Rod Kovick, Gary Anderson, Doug Skor, Art Cranmer. The girls elected were loyce Bjorgum, Nancy Bridges, and Adela Wilkinson. lna Bjoin and Bill Hakes were foreign exchange students to Mexico. The Iunior Prom will go down in the history of H.H.S. as one of the best ever held. The theme was sea mist, and many Iuniors spent long hours con- tributing to its success. As our Iunior year closes we will remember it with fond memories, and we will often think of the good times We spent. SOPI-IOMOBE CLASS HISTORY We, the class of '63, entered the Helena Senior High School in the fall of 1960 With the opinion that We would be the best class in the school's history. We found from experience and time that there Were other classes that felt this Way. But, since then, we have done many things that have recognized us as a class of honesty, personality, and leadership. We were off at a fast pace with our officers: Bob Olson, Bob Anderson, Ianet Burr, Mary Kay Williams, and Gary Coltrane, leading us. We elected pretty Tanya McGaffick, and animated Ieanne Andre as our princess candidates. We were proud to have them represent us in the coronation. We admire the athletic accomplishments of our boys and girls, especial- ly Bob Anderson, a high point in basket ball: and Susan Little, rated one of the best skiers in the state. Our class had one of the largest percentages in the Vigilante Parade. We are pleased With the many awards we received. Looking over our acheivements and accomplishments We are proud, and We are anxious to do better in the coming years. We Wish to thank our sponsors, Mrs. Williams, Mr. Annala, and Mr. De- kam, for making this successful year possible. The purpose of this organization is to increase understanding and friendship among the peop1e's of the world, by giving American teenagers the opportunity to live with families in a foreign land. The school can select six applicants for this honor. From these, this non-profit organization picks the lucky students. If chosen, one is expected to uphold America's standard of conduct and to promote America's prestige abroad. 'l'o be eligible one must: be at least 16 years of age, have studied a foreign language, be a member in good standing of the study body of a school which has an A.F.S. foreign student during the current academic year, be a member of the Iunior class, be a U. S. citizen, have an excellent academic record, and be in excellent health. Last year Dru Dougherty was selected to go to Argentina. Mary Kay McEacheron Went to Germany. Each loved his country and found the trip to be an unforgettable and very profitable experience. Each hopes to re- turn to his adopted home in the near future. ln the fall of l96O of the six above candidates, Doug Skor was chosen to go to Denmark. He will leave in Iune and will remain until next Ianuary. l-le will attend school during his stay. Mr. Weaver, chairman of the AES. chapter, initiated the program in Helena.
