His kindliness, integrity and jovial manner endeared him to everyone. He will be remembered especially for his work with the 3-7-77's. Through his efforts in this organization he was able to instill in many students, high ideals and qualities of good citizenship. His students will remember too, his 'Quotable Quotes' which appeared daily on the blackboard and contained many of his own thoughts and convictions. He possessed the qualities necessary for the making of a fine teacher. The success of his teaching can surely be measured by his lasting influence on those who came into contact with him. In respect to Mr. Leger, a Memorial Loan Fund has been established to en- able worthy students to obtain a college education. It is surely a fitting tri- bute to a loved and respected teacher. lTh b t b t tt by Sam C pp f 11 w teach d 1 g t friend.J PAGE SIX 2 .ml k SQ vii' .x xi . if, ' .Q X 5 .192 k 3 - .ykh A . 4 be we Q i N 1 I want an excuse. In his sec- ond year as superintendent, he made certain that every need of any of the schools in the system was satisfactorily met. He has shown that he is a man to be respected, and the student who knows of the work that goes with his job does admire his capability. Although a busy J- ? man, he always has time to give every one a smile and a helping hand. As general manager of the State class C tournament held here, he made him- self known to all present by being every- where at once, making the tournament a success. SUPT. C. R. Anderson gin: : x l, M.: f---4 it A' SCI-IQQL BQARD W W K Many tough problems were met this second year in the new high school and many wise decisions were made. All details ot high school were considered, whether large or small. The members of the board can be proud of the excellent job they have done. Mr. Rossiier. SCI-IGOL ADMINISTRATION Here are the people who do much tor us. They see that school supplies are on hand among many other very important duties. Most students are unaware that this group exists, but without them, school lite would be quite unpleasant. Miss Carter, Mr. lanes, Miss Chapman, Mrs. Sieger. PAGE EIGHT MR. CDGREN Students start school at nine and leave at four, but Mr. Ogren's day is much longer. The best years of our lives are spent in high school, and Mr. Ogren helps very much by guiding us through any difficulties that We may encounter. He skillfully keeps school life moving, even when several activities fall on the same clay. Mr. Ogren deserves much credit for the excellent job that he has done and Will continue to do. Under the able guidance of the six employed in the office, seven hundred students registered in Helena Senior High this year choosing from forty-six solid classes for their curriculum. Six full-time janitors are employed to keep the twenty-six classrooms in Working order and to keep the school looking bright and new. Thirty-five faculty members and four instructors guided the students through a highly successfull year. MR. SHARE In his one year at Helena high school, Mr. O'l-lare has earned the respect of the faculty and student body. He has done an excellent job helping students organize their schedules and seeing that they have t sufficient credits to graduate. PAGE TWENTY-ONE CLASS OF '57 PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT IOHN LYNDES H- I- DHI-I-EY nw SECRETARY REPRESENTATIVE TREASURER DARLENE BALLARD IEANICE HELLAND STEVE FAHRION The mighty class of '57 came to HHS with a bang, sponsoring ct 'Frosh Get Aquainted' dance after only a month of school. This event started a spirit of 'stick-togetherness' that the class has been noted for C111 four YSCIIS. Under the direction of Al Stratton, Ted Cooney, Sam Samson and Iae Retz, they won the coveted Robert's cup, quite a feat for a Freshman class. Sponsors named for the ClCISS Of '57 Were Miss Giese, Miss Morse and Mr. Sprinkle. As Sophomores, they put on a 'Hit Parade' dance in black and white working out in detail the popular songs of the time. Five boys lettered in football, two in basketball, and an additional four in track. The DeMolay sweetheart, Ginny Hand, was chosen from this class, and led by R. I. Dalley, Iudy Retz, Ted Cooney, Ben Notti and Eldon Pickering, they went on to win the Robert's cup again. The year of '56 proved a great year for the class of '57 as they staged the best ever 'Dixie Dreams' prom. They crowned Ianie Glasby, '56 prom gueen, mid decorations of southern shadows highlighted with glitter, and colonial mansions. The class put on a very successful career night and, led by Iim Easbey, Eldon Pickering, Eleanor Foster, Chuck Lip- pert and Carol Anthony, went on to capture the Robert's cup for the third consecutive time, along with the Wahl Cup. The mighty seniors of '57 put on a rip-snortin' Senior roundup that will long be re- membered, headed by Iohn Lyndes, R. I. Dalley, Darlene Ballard, Steve Fahrion and Ieanice Helland. Dot Iones was the second member of the class to be crowned DeMolay sweet- heart. Mr. Mayer was named to take Mr. Spinkle's place as sponsor. After a highly suc- cessful Senior banquet, baccalaureate, and, finally, graduation, the class of '57 left HHS taking many fine memories with them and leaving behind many hours of work and play. The ambition of this class will long be remembered at Helena High. PAGE PAGE TWENTY-TWO ANDERS. The 3-7-77's is an honorary service club iound only in Helena High. lt is composed of Zl juniors and seniors chosen from the student body on the basis of character, leadership, scholar- ship, courtesy, service, dependability, and citizenship. Membership in this organization is one of the highest honors a student can achieve in his high school career. The sponsors are Robert Wand and Alice Schmidt. This page could hardly be completed without acknowledgment of the past sponsor of this group. He led the club in all its activities for over 20 years. This man, George H. Leger, was loved and admired by all who knew him. He endeared himself to thousands of students and their parents in the many years that he taught. He not only guided his students' minds, he also guided their morals. Not only did he preach, but he practiced what he preached. The man himself has passed on, but what he stood for still remains. After his death many people expressed a desire to form a lasting memorial to him. The out- growth of this desire is the Gus Leger Memorial Loan Fund: lt is a loan available to all Helena High students, and is awarded on the basis of need. lt is administered by the principal of the school, a faculty and a 3-7-77's member, and three outside persons. But, those who have known and worked with Gus do not need an established tradition to remember him by. Can any of us forget Gus' Christmas lecture or his Hquotable quotesn? One of his favorite quotations expresses well his philosophy of life. I expect to pass through this liie but once. lf, therefore, there is any kindness I can show. or any good l can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, let me not defer it, for I shall not pass this way again. . . -Henry Van Dyke His Christmas prayer, which he sent to all the 3-7-77's members ably expresses his ideals, which the club also strives to uphold. FOOTPATH TO PEACE To be glad of life, because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars, to be satisfied with your possessions, but not contented with yourself until you have made the best of them, to despise nothing in the world, except falsehood and meanness, and to fear nothing except cowardice, to be governed by your admirations rather than by your disgusts, to covet nothing that is your neighbor's except his kindness of heart and gentle- ness of manners, to think seldom of your enemies, often of your friends and every day of Christ, and to spend as much time as you can with body and spirit, in God's out-of-doors-these are little guideposts on the footpath of peace. -Henry Van Dyke PAGE SIXTY-NINE I NATIONAL I-IONOR SOCIETY . , i, in 5 Q r 'f' ,Ogg up I 35 E' V, First row: Ieanice Helland, Al Stratton, Nancy Nelson, Pete Carkulis, Doral Hood, Steve Fahrian, Sue Castles. Seen in the above picture are Helena's five cheerleaders before their last basketball game of the season. The game with Kalispell was a trying one as Helena won in the last few seconds by only one point. It meant as much to the cheerleaders as it did to the Bengals and Coach Lloyd Skor because by winning this game the Bengals didn't have to appear in the sudden death at the state tournament. It was a happy and worn crowd and five be-drag- gled cheerleaders that left Helena's gym that night. Putting on pep assemblies and promoting school spirit was the task these tive girls were confronted with. Ginny, Iudy, Ieanice, Dee, and Iucly had their hands full keeping up with the Bengals this year and missed very few out of town games. They also took charge of all pep assemblies designating certain clubs to put on skits for the assemblies. Clubs participating this year were Honor Society, 3-7-77's, Girls' H-Club, Thespians, Twirlers, and the Iunior Girls. Cheerleading tryouts are held each spring along with Student Body elections. Girls try out in groups of two or three in front of the Student Body. Elected each year are two sopho- mores and one junior. From the two sophomores elected, a cheer queen is chosen the follow- ing year. This year Ginny Hand served as cheer queen. A heart-breaking 12-13 loss to Butte after an uphill struggle doused the Bengals' hopes for a long over-due state Championship. After thumping Havre 29-12 and Billings 32-14 and edging Butte Central 7-O, they met doom in Missoula where the Spartans crushed our injury- ridden locals 6-27. Then came the tension-packed Butte game followed by a brutal 50-18 blasting of Anaconda. State Champion Great Falls up-ended Hel- ena 12-27, but the battling tigers came clawing back to drub Livingston 27-6 and maul Bozeman 33-19 to achieve the record season. Our beloved little stuffed tiger, lost to Billings the year previous, Was Won back with decisiveness. The Crimson piled up a 32-U lead early in the third quarter when Coach Hansen called off his tigers and sent in the reserves. lt was also Helena's first football victory over Billings in history. One of the scrappiest crews ever seen was the story of Helena's 1957 'tiny tigers' of the hardwood. This smallest, but most aggressive team in the state came within three points of championship glory. After years of skyscraper athletes, Coach Lloyd Skor floored a first five that averaged little better than 5 feet 10 per man. But the final result wasn't far from that achieved by the teams of big boys. They hustled, fought, clawed and chewed their way through the campaign until they brought home the fourth place trophy from Butte. The Bengals had an up-and-down season before emerging with a nine win nine loss record good for fifth place in the 'big l0'. In pre-season play they finished third in the Butte Central invitational tournament. Then in the state tournament the Bengals came to a peak. They went to Butte with idea of fighting their way through. And fight they did. In the lid lifter they could not buy a basket in the first half, but came roaring back to overcome a ten point deficit in the last half and upset de- fending state champion Butte Central 48-44. Semi-final night with 9,000 spectators crowded into Butte Civic Center, the team faced tourney-favorite Butte Public on the bulldogs home floor. They trailed all the way and were nine points down with 1:15 left. Then they rallied, and despite four bad breaks fell only three points short, 62-59. Butte easily Won the championship game next evening. The next morning Helena again came from behind to top Flathead 73-65 and then finished fourth losing to Butte Central that night 85-69.
