A reflection of life has been captured in words and pictures between the covers of the 1954 Vigilante. A variety of experiences are recalled herein to remember and re-live in future years. This book, like life, is the result of shared experiences and responsibilities. The Vigilante is divided as your high school life is divided to meet the response of different interests. As many as these are, there will be even more in your further life. May your life be components of all these factors in well- balanced proportion so that fifty years from now you can say: THIS is life. The answer is in the living. xbx ww., Qiharlvz Hi. iillattill iifearher - Illrivnh - Glnunzvlnr To Mr. Mattill, who has dedicated a lifetime of service to young people, helping them on their way. His kind consideration, patience. and understanding will always be remembered. We dedicate this our 1954 Vigilante with affection. tl! PAGE SIX 1 ,43 X: , . FELLBAUM Mr. Fellbaum is the unseen man behind our entire school system. lt is through work and endeavor such as his that We are able to attend school. His job has been so well done that he is rated high throughout the state as a superintendent. lplls . ,. E , lwiiu ADMINISTRATION STAFF More is done by this group ot people than most of us dream ot. Theirs alone is the respon- sibility of getting supplies to school on timeeot keeping the books straight and the bills paid. Theirs is a job that calls tor care and discretion. Left to right: Mr. lanes. Miss Carter. Mrs. Sieqer, Mrs. Ruvnikar. SCHOOL BOARD The school board must de- cide on what days We Will have a holiday how long our Vacations may last, who will teach us and many other details ff- none too large or small tor their lull consider- ation. Their job calls for a great amount ot foresight and understanding of the students and their problems. Left to right: Mr. Norseth, Mr. Buucus. Mr. Rieqel. Mr. Kind, Mr. Rossiier, Mr. Knox, Mr. Fellbaum. Dr. Biork, Mr. Brown, Mr. lanes, Mr. Reuterduhl, Mrs. Betznet, Mrs. Lurison. PACE EIGHT MR. KORN Although Mr. Korn was able to be with us only a very short time, he Won the respect of the entire student body. During the long weeks in the hospital, he was re- membered by the students, who kept him in touch with the school by cards, letters, flowers and other gifts. MR. OGREN School doesnt start at nine and end at four for Mr. Ogren. His days are much longer. He skillfully guides us through four of the best years of our livesg he endures our misbehav- ing and excusesq he keeps the school going even when a basketball game, a play and a pep assembly come on the same day: and he is respected by all. MR. RUSSELL As principal of the air- port school, Mr. Russell has made it one of the finest of its kind in the country. An outstanding record can be noted by the fact that none of his students have failed the federal examinations. Besides being the principal of the school, he teaches welding, helps to train boys for various technical jobs, and gives individual atten- tion to his students. Besides the ones listed, many students took scholarship tests from the school they were interested in. The University of Montana makes available scholarships to high-ranking seniors. The scholarships can be used at any of the divisions of the Greater University of Montana and are for various amounts. The Elks scholarship, awarded by the local BPOE chapter of Helena, consisted of fifty dollars first prize, twenty-five dollars second prize and fifteen dollars for third. The Catholic boy with the highest average is presented a scholarship from Carroll College. lf he does not wish to use it, it goes to the next highest. High School Week in Bozeman, sponsored by MSC, is open to the twenty seniors with the highest averages and who are able to attend. During the Week, tests for achievement and aptitude are given. High School Week was April 29, 30 and May l. For science students, the Bausch and Lomb science award is presented to the most outstanding science student throughout high school. This year Montana State University gave scholarship tests to seniors in the state and awarded 12 full fee for one year scholarships to the top ranking people. PAGE THIRTY-SIX t img WW' ,- tn. 1. Salutatorian Dave Burgan was salutatorian ot the class of 1954 with an average of 4.86. Dave was one ot the most active boys in school participating in many varied activ- ities. He was representative of his junior class and president ot his senior class. Dave was president ot Honor Society and Latin Club and was also editor of the 1954 Vigilante. He was on the Nugget statt and in Quill and Scroll, a Rotary representa- tive, was in student council, and in Boys' H-Club. Last summer he attended Boys' State and played Legion baseball. Despite his numerous activities Dave managed to maintain a high scholastic average. Valedictorian Mike Billings led the graduating class of 1954 with a scholastic average of 4.88. Mike was the first boy who has been valedictorian in the last tour years. Dur- ing his tour years in HHS, Mike was in student council, Latin Club, Nugget staff, and was vice president of Honor Society in his senior year. Mike also ranked high in the National Honor Society tests taken in his senior year. His brilliance in work and his eagerness to render service on any job should make HHS proud of its valedictorian. The first few games were trying ones as the Bengals dropped two of the first four. When the Butte Roundtable tourney came the Bengals were in the groove and easily copped that tourney. After the tourney the Bengals won five more to stretch their winning streak to eight before losing their third and last game. In that streak the Bengals scored revenge wins over Missoula and Livingston, their early-season conquerors. They also knocked off Anaconda who finally snapped their string. 1 After that loss the Bengals won their next 15 in a row which bettered the '53 team's best string of 13 in a row. In those 15 games the Bengals hit 70 or more points nine times and held their opponents under 50 points eight times. After tying for second in the Big 16 with Sidney, the Bengals won the Northern Divisional tournament at Great Falls, knocking off Big 16 Champion Missoula by 12 points in the final. Helena climaxed their long, victorious season with a 56-51 win in the state finals over Sidney. Helena had a winning edge over every opponent they met during the year as they won 25 of 28 games. The '54 team left several streaks for the '55 team to keep up. They won the Butte Roundtable for the third straight year: the Northern Divisional for the third straight year: the state tourney for the second straight year: won their last 15 games in a row, and held a 26-game home winning streak when the season ended. Captain Russ Sheriff finished his career by making first team All-State center. Don Smidt made second team forward and Billy Gilbert made third team guard. PAGE ONE HUNDRED TWENTY SEVEN Vigilante Parade 1 Begun in 1925 by Principal I. A. Roberts to replace the sneak days, the Vigilante Parade is today the event rnost looked forward to by the students and faculty of Helena 1-ligh School, as well as by the people of Helena and the surrounding communities. The parade boasts of a high safety record with the last accident occurring in 1933 or '34 when a girl was thrown from her horse. Last year the record of 88.7 per cent, set in 1952, was shattered when 94.9 per cent of the school participated in the parade. The class of '53, in their senior year, won the coveted Roberts' Cup with a participation percentage of 100 per cent. Then followed the class of '56 PAGE ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-EIGHT Vigilante Parade with a percentage of 95.6, the class of '54 with 95.4 per cent and the class oi '55 with 89.5 per cent taking part in the parade. OI the pictures shown, the following won first prizes: GUARDIAN OF THE GULCH, most authentic, THE HELENA, I877, historical: BUILDING THE FIRST RAILROAD IN MON- TANA, Roberts' award, TRADING AND PRESSING BUFFALO ROBES, FORT LEWIS, 1848, sweepstakes, CHARRED REMAINS, pioneer lite, and SIOUX INDIAN BURIAL, Indian division. The Vigilante Parades are centered around the history ot Montana and although it would seem that the source of supply for ideas is limited, each year there are many new angles pictured, thus making the parade increasingly bigger and better.
