To many people, the Helena Crimson Bengal's record of two wins, tive losses and one tie seems very unimpressive. But upon closer examination and considering the lack of weight in the line and the returning ot only six lettermen, the SZ squad was potentially one of the best teams in the state. What the Bengals lacked in size, they made up for in spirit. This was proven by the fact that the Bengal squad was acclaimed by sports writers as the upset team of the state. They showed the home fans their spirit by beating the undefeated Butte Public Bulldogs l8 to l3 in the upset game of the year. In the last game of the season, an inspired Bengal team pulled another upset by tying Great Falls l3 to 13 and knocking the Bisons out of the state championship. The Bengals gained the name of the Giant Killers. There were tour Bengals who received All-State honors. They were Vince Lupien, Ike Lanning, Bob Lambert and Vince Kelleher. Honorable mention was given to Chuck Bentz and Ken Schneider. ,., ,... .., Elia 1 FOOTBALL COACHES-Charles Iohnson, Bernard McGinley, Frank Williams KITTENS Under Coach Bernard McGinley, the Benqal Kittens had a season record oi one win, one loss, and twt: tics. The champion Helena Crimson Bengals finished the season in a blaze of glory winning the Big 16 crown, the Northern Divisional crown, and the State Class A championship. The Towering Tigers wrote cage history for Helena High school and class A teams. They were considered by many to be the greatest learn to ever play on a Montana high school court. The Bengals literally rewrote the record books. There were few records left unbroken by Coach Lloyd Skor's Towering Tigers as they won the triple crown. The Tigers erased about every Big 16 and tournament record. Center Ray Howard broke almost a whole bookful himself. He broke Big 16 individual game and season scoring marks and set new tournament and Hel- ena Bengal marks in a brilliant season. The Bengals placed two men on the All-State first team, being Ray Howard, who was almost a unanimous selection for all-state center and was the top vote getter, and Vince Kelleher who made utility man on the All-State first team last year. Vinnie was captain and won the guard position this year. George Bedhair was selected for the forward position on the third team and Buss Sheriff was given honorable mention.
