FELLBAUM Entering high school the some year as the senior class, hut as principal, Mr. Pellhaum got the jump on us hy graduating a year ahead, into the superin- tendency of the city schools. As superintendent, he managed the school sys- teni with the same sureness and efficiency that he had shown in Helena High. PRINCIPAL C. M. Entered school in '44 meek as lambs, soon became accustomed to being bossed and bullied, were lucky in having Miss Wiger and Mr. Fahland as sponsors, elected Sam Murphy president, sponsored a Frosh jitterbug hop, which filled the treasury, as sophs led by lohn Mcl-lugh, by then had learned from those above us, had a large participation in the Vigilante parade, which was held for the first time since the war, had many outstanding students, were well represented in all departments, rejoiced over peace while prexy Ioe Martello laid plans for the biggest and best Prom seen since they had started having lunior Proms, a lively Sen- ior year Was predicted, which came true, first with a rip-roaring Senior Barn Dance, which was one of the duties of Ed Dunn, president and later on into picnics, and a Senior banquet, but we proved we could be serious when it came to graduation and baccalaureate. Look- ing forward to the future where we will be the leaders and followers. The Bengals were impres- sive the first halt' of the game. but failed to show any fight the second half and were snowed under by the powerful Rangers' aerial attack. In a return game with the Rangers in Helena on September 27. the Bengals plaved good ball. but again were beaten by the Rangers T to 6 before a packed Vigi- lante stadium. Jim Lambert scored for the Bengals on a fullback smash from the three yard line. - Outmanned. outweighed. but not outplayed. the Bengals played their best game of the season against the huge Great Falls Bisons in Helena October 3. as the largest eiowd of the season eheered. l I The defending state champion. Missoula Spartans. swamped the Bengals 39 to 0 as the fans and players were overwhelmed by their power. The injury-ridden Bengals traveled to5Billings to meet the powerful Brones. and were defeated 27 to 0. I The Bengals broke into the winning column by defeating the hapless Kalispell Braves 1221 to l-I in the last home game of the season. The Kittens. coached by Bernard McGinley lost but three games and beat some ot' the best reserve and B squad material in the statefr' The 'Kittens. led by Jack Stewart. Claude Weaver. Barry Trent. Pat Kelleher. and Bill Kelley. rolled over most of their opposition with their smooth ball handling and air tight defense. The Kittens are holders of the mythical crown of the champions of the Little Big 16. A The Kitten reserves showed at times that they were almost on a par with the Kitten first stringers. t'Mac has shown that there are boys on his squad who with a little more training will become the State Champions a few years from now. The Bengal frosh surprised the Helena fans and the coaching staff by proving to be one of the tougher frosh teams in the state.
