N TX e HISTORY OF ECORSE TOWNSHIP SCHUOL DISTRICT N0. 7 The earliest records of the Heintzen School are of 1902 when the land where the Fordline School now stands was accepted by a one-room school, and taught by Mr. Oscar Turk of Northville. The director at that time was Mr. Louis Schafer. In 1923 the present two-room structure was build, and staffed by Mrs. Anne Miller and Mrs. Sally Clark. - Until 1943 all of the districts school children were comfortably housed in these two rooms, and numbered less than one hundred. As the Fordville area began to grow, it was found necessary to build a school in a more central location, adequate in size to care for the increased population, and in September 1945 a new six-room building at Burns and Northline was opened with six new teachers employed. One bus served to transport the children and the driver, Mr. John Dubke, acted, also, as custodian. Mrs. Mildred Shelters acted as principal and music instructor. In September 1947 another population growth was evidenced, and the Board of Education started plans for an addition of nine rooms to care for the future increase indicated by the constantly increasing building in the Fordville area. The new rooms were opened in September of 1948 with sixteen teachers. 500 children, and two custodian-bus drivers. Again in 1949 the facilities were found inadequate and the district voted to add another fifteen rooms. In September 1950. thirty-two rooms were opened, housing over a thousand children. At that time the school was staffed by thirty-two teachers and six custodians. There were four buses in operation. Because of the continued building in school district number seven, it was necessary to provide more classrooms for the increased population So in November of 1952 the Otto R. Gerisch School was dedicated. The building is located on McCann Rd. at Brest Rd. The Gerisch School was named for Mr. Otto R. Gerisch who owned the land on which the building now stands. The Gerisch School contains sixteen classrooms, a library, prin- cipal's offices, teacher's lounge, three supply rooms, a kitchen, jan- itor's work room and a three bus garage. Once more there is a classroom shortage. This spring, of 1953, will find the construction of two new buildings started. One is a six- teen room addition to the Gerisch School. The other, a combination auditorium and gymnasium to be built at the Heintzen School. The new addition to the Heintzen.School will have locker and shower rooms for both boys and with a stage 18x41 feet cluded which will be of There will be a balcony stallation of about 300 seven has in its employ two principals, and one girls. There will be a 50X80 foot playing floor and two dressing rooms. A kitchen is also in- adequate size to permit a school lunch program. over the locker rooms which will allow the in- seats. At the present time district number forty-nine teachers, ten custodians, four clerks superintendent. The enrollment now totals 1942.
