' Football Fever: Annual Fall Epidemic ■ if W jf ■ v ■k| JH Ml A l, Sports 15 Sports 16 The football season got off to a promis¬ ing start this year for Heidelberg with the Student Princes championing their first three games. At that point, however, the team proceeded to falter and lost five of the last six. This left Heidelberg with a 4-5 overall season record, the first losing sea¬ son since 1 970. The major difficulty in the team’s per¬ formance seems to have been the need for a more stable running game and a less penetrable defense. Despite the team’s letdown, junior quar¬ terback Tim VanGoethem and senior split end Marty Fanning were able to attain goals of individual glory. VanGoethem, of Trenton, Mich., fin¬ ished fourth in total offense in final ' 74 Division III football statistics with an aver¬ age of 1 96 yards per game and 1 3.8 com¬ pletions. Fanning, from Carey, Ohio, tied for tenth in receptions with an average of five per game and was also selected to play for the West in this season’s Shrine Bowl. Sports 17 I GRIDIRONS: ROW 1: J. The 74-75 Heidelberg basketball squad has managed to put a spark into the name and game of basketball that had long since been forgotten by most ' berg fans. The team’s diligent efforts have been rewarded with what has turned out to be the first winning basketball season for Hei¬ delberg in the past seven years. The fans hung perilously on the edge of their bleacher seats as the Student Princes, serious contenders in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) race, were downed by the slightest margins in their last few dual season games. At the deadline for this publication the final outcome of the OAC tourney is not yet predictable. But in any case the ' berg Student Princes have proven themselves worthy opponents on the court. Thus far in the season junior captain Mark Chrislip of Seville has been the con¬ sistent scoring leader for the Princes with an average of nearly 14 points per game. He has been most closely followed by Dave Wirick who also leads the team in rebounds. Sports 24 m J.V.
