AURORA l968 Heidelberg College Tiffin, Ohio ,,..-f', t Q if In Dedication Dr. Porter joined the staff of Heidelberg as Dean of the College in the summer of 1967. He came to Tiffin from Hanover College where he served as economics professor and during the academic year 1961-62 as Dean. Since coming to Heidelberg, Dean Porter has taken an active role in the life of the campus. He has com- pleted a successful first year and has won the friend- ship and respect of both students and faculty. In recognition of his contributions to the fields of economics and education and to Heidelberg College, We proudly dedicate the 1968 AURORA to Dr. Arthur R. Porter, J r. College: A Way of Life This college . . . Heidelberg, and this year . . . 1968 will never be exactly the same. It was unique, for the college, the people, and the ideas are ever changing. It was a Way of life for us. Some- times it was happy, sometimes sad. Sometimes it was busy and exciting, sometimes boring and lonely. These next few pages, in particular, are trying to help us remember the living, the every- day life we led . . . sitting in the lounge . . . Working in the din- ing hall . . . studying in the library . . . going to the Castle . . . Walking in the rai11 . . . sitting o11 the park benches . . . listening to Bishop Pike . . . Waiting for the mail . . . thinking . . . This is the year as you saw it and lived it, and it is important that you have it recorded . . . for it will never be this Way again . . . nnllv- if Zi!!! c 'mi my Wm W 15 JH? It is a temper of the Willg a quality of the imaginationg a vigor of the emotionsg it is a freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over a life of ease. Nobody grows old by merely living a number of yearsg people grow old by deserting their ideals. -Samuel Ullman Mfr 'ii A Q4 f,., rl' w A , X ',, W x 5- if 2' 5 'X .4Q. In addition to operating the Castle and its branches, the Board planned and developed a college-wide Student Center Program. This involved planning a program which could be used effectively in the new Student Union. The Board drew up a list of facilities to be incorporated into the new Union. An architect was commissioned to draw preliminary sketches for the new building from these plans. The Board's work this year resulted in great strides toward the planning of the new Union. Second semester included an Open House, pledging, a spring dance, the Spring Banquet, and the final event of the year, the Sing-Out Banquet. Stemming from a long line of tradition beginning in November, 1913, the Philalethean Society is continually meeting the challenges of the community and campus activities by remembering their motto, Do Ye Bestef' By living up to this motto, the Phis have built a true sisterhood. The name, Philalethean, stands for Lovers of Truth. Recognizing a Phi on campus is easy because of their white blazers, green and gold insignia, and onyx rings with the Phi symbol. Whether it be at the Homecoming Tea, the Phi Phair, Open House, Serenade, Christmas Party for underprivi- leged children, or Spring Banquet, the Phi smile is always present. The Philalethean activities are not limited to the society alone. Participation in the Intersociety Sing, Intersociety Tea, pledging program, and the Women's floats for Homecoming show a concern for the strengthening of society relationships and the traditions of Heidel- berg College. Founded in 19449, the hlue and gold represent the youngest of Heidelhergis societies. Since then Sigma Tau Nu has tried to attain a uniqueness of its own, a quality of individuality which distinguishes one person from another. By offering the opportunity for individual as Well as group participation, the Sigs strive to direct each toward his place in society. Among the activities highlighting the Sig calendar are the Homecoming float, the Sig Sweetheart dance, community projects, intramural sports, pledging, intersociety sing, the Spring Serenade and the Spring Banquet. By Working together for the achievement of mutual goals, the men of Sigma Tau Nu have created a Fraternal fellowship and spirit which gives the Sigs a cohesive oneness. This is how the Sigs maintain their motto Nulli Secundusu, 6'Seconcl to Nonen. 1. I 1 ,f-ow -1 ,hifi x -L 5-Lf' ,, , ,Ni E' QM QQ i KT' ?',9'f -w i : 9-C .'CQ L , .-. 1 .L .J rf 4 f -' , . It was marked by many exciting moments: the last second field goal which beat Grove City, the fourth quarter touchdown against Capital, and even the last second loss to Marietta. It was also marked by a spectacular Chuck Ehlers run, a key John Rupert interception, and a clutch Darrel Porr catch. The 1967 season saw personal honors going to Chuck Ehlers who was elected to the first string All-Ohio Con- ference team, John Lefever and Stu Shoaff who were elected to the second string, and Ron Lessick and John Lefever who were our co-captains. Stu Shoaff was the team's most valuable player. 'Li'--1 ? L - 53.1 ' X Y -yi 5 T: :ova , Jigs- ' -A jr , - 'j .4 . JTQ.- . . , . p 1 :Zi -H-:,.j,!w.5,g-1,5 .-ex 'Q A 3 . Although the soccer team finished its first varsity season with a 2-5-1 record, its future is far from dis- couraging. Only two seniors are graduating, leaving 17 letterrnen, all veterans of a tough O.C.S.A. sea- son. Out of the nine games scheduled, only two, Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg, showed the Princes on the low end of the scoring tally, but plagued by bad abrakesn and inexperience, 4 out of 5 losses were by 1 or 2 goal margins. The Princes finally played up to potential mid-way through the season when they peppered the Mount Union goal and glided to a 7-2 victory. Wing Brian J ones and player coach Roger Leaf were tied for season high scorers with six goals apiece. N-'DI . gn? a any-.
