Mr. VanDyke is particularly remembered tor his service as faculty advisor for the AUORA and his spirited work in the concession stand at the football games. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan he graduated from Ann Arbor Uni- versity and had studied under a Ford Foundation Fellowship the summer of l96l at the University of Pittsburgh. Again in l963 eight weeks were passed at lndiana University. Much of his ettort was employed to make the garden beautiful, to repair the church, to build a recreation room. And yet, in the midst of all, no day was so busy that the problem of a iriend or student could not be given attention. His time was given ungrudgingly to community, college, neighbor and church -never shying from Work. Dr. Longaker works with a stud lab. In ,Memoriam Perry Longaker l ent in the science Irv-'wus-u--. . . . a new friend who will never be forgotten. As he left the Heidelberg community he went as a new-found friend might, possessing a vast store of concern and a wealth of insight not yet unfolded to those who loved him. His roots with the college were deep, having graduated in 1927. Five years passed, and after Iohns Hopkins Medical School and surgical training he accepted a position on the Dayton Clinic surgical staff. In 1935 Dr. Long- aker began a practice in Conneaut, Ohio which was twenty-five years in duration. Early in his professional life, Dr. Longaker was stricken with an affliction unknown to himself and others in medicine and yet he never spent one word of complaint. Strength prevailed. In his three years at Heidelberg he constantly sought the best in a student's work and met sincere disappointment when they fell short. Al- ways recalling a name, never forgetting a date . . . a personality who shared himself, made known his concern and integrated his education in soothing the body and spirit.

The Old and The New is a theme so appropriate for the l964 AURORA not because this is an anniversary of years, but because this is an anniversary of thoughts, ideas, out-looks, and ideals. To the upper classmen, the old need not be pointed out. They can see it in the buildings and the absence of familiar faces, sense it in the traditions which still influence the campus, and feel it in the attitude ot all their Heidel- berg acquaintances. Freshmen, don't look to this for guidance. Rather, look only to the new- the future. Enioy the use of the new buildings, search for the new faces that are here to guide you, establish new traditions for a new future, and cling to the optimistic attitude. You and your successors are the new. Let all else be recorded only in the pages of the history books. Read these pages carefully, Heidelbergers, for herein lies the dichotomy. The Old is only for a record: The New holds the promise.
