They have opened their hall to the women's soci- eties for informal parties on Friday and Saturday nights. This is a new policy for any men's society. The group also decided to have open card parties on the last Wednesday night of every month. Their regular meetings have been changed so that every other week they have fellowship meetings with a formal business meeting. As is custom- ary, the Aps have a spring banquet. .ff I 4 - .Q f 4 Aptonalton open house! This year they chose Dr. Moir and Dr. Kramer as new honorary members. ROW 1: W. Murray, R. Armstrong, N. Astra Castra, Numen Lumen is the society motto which when translated means the stars are our camping ground, divinity our light. The Si1VCf ring worn by each Euglossian member binds them together in lasting friend- ships. The ring is worn on the left hand, closest to her heart. The Philalethean Society chose their name Philalethean, Lovers of Truth, in view of the spirit which would always characterize their meeting and be the standard for their literary work. True to its motto, Do Ye Beste the society has continually strived to bring each individual member to the realiza- tion of herself and to the fuller develop- ment of her powers. Consequently, this aim has developed in most members the inclination to put forth their best efforts for the society and college. Some of the former social functions were replaced with dances, banquets, and an open house. The society's colors are green, which stands for constance, strength, truth and valor, gold, which stands for splendor, justice, and supremacy. ROW 1: M. Hosmer, L. Fletcher, A. Agnew, P. Myers, B. MOTHERS, WEEK-EN D Approximately 150 mothers came to our campus for a week- end of fun and entertainment with their daughters. The week- end included a style-show, classes, teas, smorgasbord din- ner, and the dress rehearsal of The Rainmakerf' Church and Sunday dinner ended this very special week-end. COM NCEMENT One hundred and nineteen students entered a new door as they received their degrees on june 8, 1958. There were also four honorary degrees con- ferred. Governor C. William O'Neil delivered the commencement address. Dean F. D. Lemke pre- sented the candidates for de- grees, and President Terry Wickham conferred the degrees. After conferrnent of the de- grees the recessional sounded forth and the class of 1958 said farewell to their Alma Mater. '- ,, . , A t W. .- FRESHMAN WEEK The words, Dink, Frosh, Dink, fol- lowed every freshman as the class of 1962 struggled through their first week at the Berg. Peggy Swinehart and Peter French planned a full week, designed to acquaint the Freshmen with upper- classmen, faculty, campus activities and the many Heidelberg traditions. This week included a formal dinner and dance, a couple of mixers, a picnic sup- per, and the usual tests. The defeat of the Freshmen in the traditional tug-of- war ended this first week and classes and studying began in earnest. 5 1 , -flT'Z1.3,... ':g ii V. A. The purpose of this organization is to offer opportunity to all women students at Heidelberg College for socialized recreation and develop- ment of skill in various sports and activities. Under the able leadership of Constance Vogt, who was the president of the Association this year, the W.R.A. attained the highest member- ship ever reached in its history on campus. Through various activities and sports the women accumulate points and receive awards. The awards consist of numerals for an accumu- lation of four hundred points, a H letter for six hundred points, bookends for eight hundred, and a trophy for twelve hundred points. In the fall and winter months the main sports are basketball, volleyball, bowling, cards, ping- pong, field hockey, soccer, badminton, and syn- chronized swimming. In the spring softball, arch- ery, and tennis complete the sports program. Activities such as high school playdays, which are conducted for local high schools, Coed Ca- pers, which is conducted for all college students, college playdays, and a banquet round out the activities of the year. Heidelberg's Student Princes contin- Coaches Hoerneman and Murphy ued their winning ways in 1958 as they posted a respectable 6-3 mark. In Ohio Conference clashes, they salvaged a .500 mark with a 3-3 record. This was Head- Coach Paul Hoerneman's 13th consec- utive season at the Hilltop. It also marked his worst season, for it was the First time that his squads had dropped more than two tilts. This was supposed to be an even worse year. With only eight lettermen composing the nucleus, the 'Berg grid- ders put forth a gallant eflfort to grasp the OC., but injuries and inexperience set hack their hopes. Bluffton suffered a loss to the 'Berg in the traditional tip-off tilt, 20-6. Dur- ing intermittent showers, Curby Smith netted 120 yards to pace the Tricolor to their first triumph. The game was marred by six fumbles and numerous penalties. Gene Williamson's booming punts kept the Beavers in deep terri- tory. The following week, triple-threat Doug Schmidt, the All O.C. quarter- back choice, and his Ohio Wesleyan crew were the Foxmen's second victim. The Battling Bishops played the worst game of the season, Schmidt's passes were off-target as he completed only 'YUST WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR T,fjl,ffLf-757, f' 'uf -' fl. , fn 4, M Q' ga, I ., . 4 , r .1 f f. , .f ,,4 .f 1 . , -- 1 ..,, 1.- 1 . . . f ..f 4, - f . 5 of 17. QB Gene Williamson tossed two TD's to pace Heidelberg to an easy 39-21 triumph. Zimmerman stadium marked the site of the best game of the season. Coach Hoerneman introduced freshman Jim Lewis to the Tigers. Wittenberg's de- fending co-titlists had their hands full as the 'Berg out-played, out-fought, and out-gained them, but four costly fumbles spelled defeat, 27-20. Lewis scored two touchdowns and two extra points. One TD came on a 44 yard screen pass from QB John James. It was maximum out- put against the same team which had drubbed them 34-6 the previous season. Q The ball's here someplace! 1 On a windy, freezing Saturday after- noon, Akron's Zippers handed the Princes an ll-O setback in the Rubber Bowl. This was the first shutout since 1954 when Morris-Harvey turned the trick. Art Bailey, Gino Calcei, and Al Smesko were thorns in the 'Berg de- fense. This game also found an uniden- tified Prince aiding a teammate to score the tying tally. An alert official called an infraction and halted the offensive punch. Princess Josephine Rippey and her court led the Foxmen to a 26-6 tri- umph in the Homecoming fray. Curby Slllllli by Iliff! I i r Smith and an alert defense, spearheaded by Little All-American and Most Valu- able Player, jim Boeke, paved the way no victory. Things were different the following week-end as Muskingum dumped Heid- elberg 22-0. Fullback Bill Cooper gained 190 yards, one more than the Princes, to pace the Muskies. The first half was marked by brilliant goal-line stands but the Muskies pulled away in the second half. Otterbein gave the Tricolor a scare on the following week-end. Rain plagued the offensive machines, as they edged past the Cardinals, 14-7. Smith topped the century mark for the third time. Confidence began to return. Highly rated Baldwin-VVallace with Chuckin' Chuck Brady fell 12-O. An alert 'Berg secondary picked off five aerials as they stopped Brady cold. Two interceptions were returned for TD's. In the final clash of the campaign the Hilltoppers overpowered the Findlay Oilers, 33-0. The offense mustered 525 yards, 454 via the ground, and 30 first downs. Rich Ventimiglia scored twice and pounded out 134 yards. This game was the climax of five sen- iors collegiate career: Co-captains, Tony Less and Chuck Jones, Ralph Beddow, Joe Migliori, and Dave Robison. Co-Captain A. Less, Most Valuable Player J. Boeke, Co- Captain C. jones. Prospects for next season are better. With twenty lettermen returning, plus some promising freshmen, the Princes should be an O.C. title contender. Boeke heads the list of linemen. Smith and Jack Ruvolo, the team's top ground gainers return. Gene Williamson, with a season's experience, should become one of the top O.C. signal callers. Chances are pret- ty bright for next season. MANAGERS: ROW l: R. Schafftner, Yost ROW 2 M. Stallings, N. Miller. FRESHMAN The Little Princes made a fine show- ing for 1958, winning four games while dropping only one. Teams in their win- ning column were Findlay, Baldwin- Wallace, and Ohio Wesleyan. Their only loss came at the hands of the sophomores in the a n n u a l Freshman-Sophomore game. This was a very hard fought con- test with the sophomores winning lil-7 behind the slashing running of Curby Smith. POCTBALL Perhaps the frosh's finest showing was against Baldwin-Wallace on our home field. Baldwin-Wallace dominated the first half and left the field at half-time with a 14-0 lead. However, in the second half Heidelberg rallied with a great team effort to win 32-14. Possibly the key to Coach Hoerne- man's optimism for 1959 might be found in the performance of this year's fresh- men. ,pf YOUNG PRINCES SHOW PR OMISEf . 121, P ax' 1 129 , VII, ,Y '-2 pl A. 1 A,, . . , 1. .A ,A . .4.., ,. + 4A ,.. .,.,, . , ,. .,. ... h , , ...,.., .,, ,A.L .m.g., , . .4, .,V. .. An athlete is asked to give willingly of his time for the practice field in order that he will provide a more creditable performance on the day of the game. This time spent on the field or in the gym means he must make sacrifices in other extra-curricular activities which his fellow students are enjoying.
