N With smiling complexions -- optimistic, defying . . . Until all meander meekly into homeroom. Attentive faces -- that listen always perceiving . . The depth of lecture -- quick or in some cases booming . . . Down empty halls -- hustled, unmoving . . . But for the steady creeping of the hand towards the bell. T hen hallways -- bustle, but quickly thin . Into classrooms -- alive the sharply deadening . . . For the clanging -- that rolls, spreading . . Down now empty halls -- once again hushed, unmoving. This system -- repeating thus receding . . . To that fateful sound -- reliving, diminishing . . . In a school now -- silent, sleeping . . Heidelberg High School -- evening.
