The-shipis brilliant record was exemplified by her being awarded the Presidential Unit Citation . . . F or extraordinary heroism .in action against powerful units of the Iapanese Fleet during the Battle off Samar, Phil- ippines, October 25, 1944. Silhouetted against the dawn as the Central Japan- ese Force steamed through San Bernar- dino Strait toward Leyte Gulf, U.S.S. Heermann was suddenly taken under at- tack by hostile cruisers on its port hand destroyers 'on the starboard and battle- ships from the rear. Quickly laying down a heavy smoke screen, the gallant ship waged battle fiercely against the superior speed and fire power of the advancing enemy, violently zigzagging' in protection of vessels stricken by hostile armorpierc- ing shells, anti-personnel projectiles and suicide bombers. 7 With one carrier of the group sunk, others badly damaged and squadron air- craft courageously co-ordinating in the attacks by making dry runs over the enemy fleet as the Iapanese relentlessly closed in for the kill, two of Task Unit 77.4.3's valiant destroyers and one de- stroyer escort charged the battleships point-blank and, expending their last tor- pedoes in desperate defense of the en- tire group, went down under the enemyis heavy 'shells as a climax to two and one- half hours of sustained and furious com- bat. The courageous determination and the superb teamwork of the officers and men who fought the embarked. planes and who manned the U.S.S. Heermann ,were instrumental in effecting the re- tirement of a hostile force threatening our Leyte invasion operations and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. - Decommissioned at,San Diego, California 4 Iuly 1947. Recommisioned San Diego, after the out- break of the Korean War 12 September 1951. BT2 ANI . . . it was the right dope!! The schedule called for us leaving on December 7th 1953 for a west- ward trek across the globe, returning via Europe sometime in the summer. Most of us kissed our gals and wives goodbye that morning on Tran- sit Shed Landing, realizing that it would be a long, long time 'till we met again. Some of the poor boys even got dear Iohn's, didn't they? Then there's the more enjoyable side to every situation - 'imagine visiting all those far off lands. The exotic Orient, the sun drenched Riv- iera, see bull fights in Spain, maybe elephants in Ceylon, and also - We,ll be shell backs when we return. Over fo 'the carrier by helicopfer. Transfer by high-line. V .. .- . A ... Yokosuka, Japan could not be called beau- tiful or clean, but it was surely a very interest- ing city. It,s narrow streets containing numer- ous souvenir shops added gayety to its already exotic air. Many a sailor found his Way back to the ship carrying a pile of gifts he bought for his family or girlfriend in this port. We all remember well the PEACE HOTEL, GRAND CHERRY, CLUB STARR, and the MAY- FLOWER. The people there tried hard to make you feel right at home with American music and hospitality. Quite a place!! Great Buddha of Kamakura. I E I I Mount Fuiiamma But so was Nagasaki, although many of us never got more than a half mile from the pier. Again, the hospitality was overwhelming. We saw Women really doing a days Work here. Remember them carrying coal off the barge moored astern of us? We observed ground zero Where the atom bomb landed, a Shinto Shrine, and also Madame Butterf1y,s home. Nagasaki was a wonderful shopping city also - - then also Sasebo was a memorable visit for many. It gave us a chance to do some shopping and eat an American meal at one of the service clubs located there. Yes, japan will be remembered by us for a longs time to come. It was gay, reasonably inexpensive, and very Warm- hearted to the American sailor. Pagoda at Goiunoto Yolcosulca E. M. Club. E , PI Th 1, . SINGAPORE Some of us had a Singapore sling at the Raffles Hotel or Brittania Club, while others tramped into the jungle of Iohore, while still many did nothing at all. Most men conceded that this rub- ber-rich city had the least to offer of any port visited on the cruise to date. The disappointment possibly lay in the fact that Women were scarce and shopping prices were high. Naturally, we all realize that the American sailor is price conscious and extremely fun- loving!!
