Delilah Athey, Editor Mrs. Janice Owens, Sponsor “COUNTRY ROADS” Volume XXVII Hector Public Schools, Hector, Arkansas Country roads, take me home What is country spirit? It’s stop- ping at a lookoff point to see all the colors of the trees during the fall. It is seeing an old house that has out- lived four generations. Country spirit is hiking along the Dare Mine road. It can be a hunting trip during deer sea- son. It is watching the same place change with each season. It is a simple church service with people you have known all your life. Country spirit is ... being in the country! 2 Picture locations Clockwise from upper left: scenic lookoff point at Rotary Ann, a house on the Maupin Flat road, Dare Mine road, the Presbyterian Church at Appleton, High- way 124 past Appleton, Dare Mine road, Dare Mine road, and Troy Coffman’s barn. To the place where 1 belong. The country spirit of Hector was intensified during an old-fashioned homecoming complete with a parade and pit barbecue. The parade was a big success. The winning entry was a mule-drawn planter driven by Bob Henry Cham- bers. There were several events on the homecoming day. Among them were a jail for those without a bonnet or beard, a greased-pole climbing contest, and a pit barbecue for everyone at noon. 4 Every year on the Saturday night before Christmas, a banquet is held for the alumni of Hector High School. This banquet is sponsored by the FHA girls and entertainment is furnished by the Senior High Ensemble. 5 ADMINISTRATION Until thy feet have trod the road, advise not wayside folk. Boys and Girls State was founded by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary to promote interest in government and in politics. The Ida Waldron Auditorium was the setting for all group meetings for both Boys and Girls State. 50 Brasilian exchange student captures heart of Hector. Tereza Roderigues came to Hector as a student from Brazil as the result of a letter from the Youth for Under- standing Program being read to all classes in high school. Immediately several students became interested in having a student from another country live in their home. Karen Ivy was one of the students. Her family contacted the agency in Texas and the project was set in motion. The Ivys requested a girl near Karen’s age. Within a few weeks, Tereza arrived to spend six months in America. Since Tereza was from Rio de Janeiro, she saw a very different life style at Tilly. During her stay in America, she attended classes taught entirely in English. Portuguese was her native language. She had never seen the game of football played before so she enjoyed watching our boys play. She roasted her first hot dog, rode her first horse, had her first broken bone, plus many other firsts. She missed seeing her first snow because she came in January, and all of our snow for the winter had fallen by the time she arrived. By the time Tereza left Hector near the end of July, she had stayed in many homes and made many friends. As a result of having the privilege of having an exchange student in our midst, we have learned to accept other ways of life and appreciate our own life style even more. 51 Girls compete for titles of Junior Miss and Miss Teen Little Rock Rena Boland and )udy Herrin competed for the title of Junior Miss at Ark. Their decisions are based on attitude, friendliness, cooperation, participation, and the ability to get along with their class- mates. There was a tie this year between two outstanding seniors Cheryl Barn- house and Charlotte Chisum for the Leadership Award. The Citizenship Award was presented to Charlie Hallum. Charlie also received the Crouch Memorial Scholarship, pre- sented annually to a deserving senior to further his education. Honor graduates must have a grade point of at least 3.33 for their years in high school. Honor graduates this year were Charlie Hallum, Delilah Athey, Rena Boland, and Janie Walker. 77 Graduation is a time of mixed emotions. The seniors are both happy, and sad. They are happy, because they are facing a whole new future with many challenges. They are sad because as they look back over their years in school they can remember all their teachers and friends; some that they may never see again. Superintendent Joe Bull officiated at Baccalaureate and Graduation ceremonies. Rev. Bo Coffman gave the sermon on Sunday at the Baccalaureate serv- ice. Mr. Bob Jackson, former class sponsor and teacher, was the speaker at the commencement exercises. family, and friends Parents are also full of feelings.
