Editor, Rena Boland Sponsor, Mrs. Janice Owens 1976 WILDCAT Volume XXVI HECTOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS HECTOR, ARKANSAS Y E S T E R D A Y We said, “We re from Hector and couldn’t be prouder.” Hector came into existence in 1885 when Mr. Mayo from Evansdale, Indiana, started a post office for the town. Mr. Mayo wanted the new post office named after his hometown. Other citizens suggested Snider, Wheeler, Wootenville, Grindersville, and Greenville. The opposition to Mr. Mayo finally settled on Greenville after Mr. Green Caudle who owned the first business in the community, a tan yard. Finally, the post office department grew tired of the controversy and asked President Grover Cleveland for a name. He suggested the name Hector, after his favorite bull pup. Mr. Mayo became angry because he did not get Evansdale as the name for the new post office and refused the postmastership. Mr. H. P. Lawley was appointed the first postmaster. The first route was from Hector to Caglesville. Cotton was the money making crop of early Hector. There were several cotton gins here. The United States Government once operated a whiskey distillery on the corner of the present grade school playground. It was run in order to collect revenue. Dr. Alfred Sherrald practiced medicine around Hector in the 1840's, 50’s, and 60’s. Dr. Peter Snider was among the First doctors at Hector. He was an authority on every- thing from physics to constitutional law. Another well-remembered doctor was Dr. Linton. He began in the horse-and-buggy days. Dr. Linton treated everything from typhoid fever to the itch. He is believed to have delivered over 4,000 babies in his time. Representative Dolan Burris who served in the state legislature in 1937, 1943, 1945, and 1949 was from the Appleton area. He sponsored the Burris Bill in 1937 that was signed into law by Governor Bailey. The bill gave veterans and widows of veterans prefer- ence on state civil service examinations. The first church in Pope County was started near Hector in 1832. It was located at Camp Ground. Rev. Maylon Bewley and his four sons: Robert, John, Nelson, and George established the church. 2 During the Civil War there was a battle fought at Hector. The Confederates had a training ground just south of Mr. A. H. Athey’s farm. The log barn still has bullet holes in it. More trouble was caused by bush- whackers than by the battle. Hector was divided in loyalty. Northern Hector was on the Union’s side and the southern part of Hector was for the Con- federates. This brought on many skirmishes. Main Street, Hector, Arkansas 3 TORNADO STRIKES On the night of April 16, 1908, Hector was almost destroyed by a tornado. It wiped out several businesses, including Craig's general store, Price and Thomas’ business house, Farmers Union store, Bewley’s gin and grist mill, the drugstore, and the Masonic Lodge Hall. The damage was estimated at $50,000. Many people were injured, some of which were critical, but luckily no one was killed. In those days, everyone helped everyone else. People from all over set to work to collect money, clothing, and food for those who lost their belongings in the storm. In one trip through the business district of Russellville, over $100 was collected. The Ladies Aid Society of near-by churches gathered food and clothing for those who suf- fered. For the first few days after the storm hit, wagon loads of goods were brought to the people of Hector. It got to the point where there wasn’t enough storage space for everything they brought. Doctors from Appleton and Caglesville came immedi- ately to help the injured. One member of the community wrote, ‘We do not | become discouraged over reverses, but with faces turned toward the future, we will go forward on the great battle of life.” 4 The people of Hector celebrated the installation of electric power on February 22, 1938. The celebration started at 4 o’clock. J. M. Oanley of Scottsville was in charge of the program, but several others also spoke. Not too long ago, Hector got a new fire truck. It was a welcome addition to our town. The truck cost $6,085. The city of Hector paid $3,000 of it, and the Hector Ruritan Club raised the remainder. James Walker was named as the fire chief. 5 HECTOR S SCHOOL SYSTEM NINETY YEARS OLD In 1886 Hector School District No. 59 opened its first school under a cotton gin shed owned by J. M. Webb with Mr. Shelby Newton as its first teacher. On October 7, 1929 a new school was finished in Hector. The building was paid for and built by local citizens. The house was built without a school tax or bond. The people of Hector raised $4,000 for the new build- ing, but after visiting other schools, the people soon realized that they had insufficient funds for the type of building they wanted. Thanks to volunteer work though, the building was built. The building was 48 feet by 54 feet and two stories high. There were three classrooms on the ground floor and an auditorium on the second floor. The school was headed by Paul Llewellyn as principal, Miss Marjorie Mathis as intermediate teacher, and Miss Lois Hurley as primary teacher. Before this, the upper grades had to walk to Newton Springs to school. The Hector school paid their tuition of $1 per month. In 1922 and 1923 the Cumberland Presby- terian Church was used for the upper grades. Later school was held in the old Masonic Lodge building as the school building built in 1923 became overcrowded. Autry Newton was the first superintendent of Hector School (1925-26). O. G. McCaroll was the first agriculture teacher (1926-27). Miss llah Forest was the first Home Economics teacher (1926-27). Easkel Horn was the first basketball coach (1926-27). The first school bus was pur- chased in 1929. The Hector School was at one time (1930-33) the largest rural school in Arkansas. 6 WING SCHOOLS HAVE A SEPARATE HISTORY TILLY Tilly was established in 1926. It consisted of two grocery stores. One was owned by Calbert Crow, the other by the postmaster, Willie Dawkins who named Tilly after his hometown of Tilly, Oklahoma. In 1904 a one room school was built. It was named after Wade West who donated the land. Later it be- came better known as Union Hill. The children could start at the age of 4 and could stay in the 8th grade as long as they wanted since there was no higher education offered. Children from three coun- ties went to this school. A new school was built by Andrew Kimbrel and his sons. The new school still just had one class- room, but had a lunchroom and a stage for entertainment. Some of the teachers included Dewey Bell, Columbus Bell, Cozette Campbell, Linda Campbell, Deler Blackwell, Wilma Emerson, Vicy Martain, Emily Maxwell, Auto Prufet, and Noie Ford. 7 Rock Springs The community now called Appleton was started in 1848. It was first called Glass Village after Chief Glass whose tribe owned the land. Later the town was moved and renamed Sulphur Springs for the sul- phur spring flowing nearby. Finally, it was changed to Appleton for an old apple orchard which grew uncommon- ly big apples. The first school at Appleton was established in 1878 and taught by Pro- fessor Nath Kehun. A new building was soon built, because the first one had no ceiling. The building pictured above was built in 1935. Other early teachers were Bud Lawrence, James F. Montgomery, F. D. E. Montgomery, A. E. Vonn, Emma Mathis, and Green Bulloch. The first church established in Appleton was the Cumberland Pres- byterian Church in 1856. The first preacher was W. W. Strictland. In 1916, Appleton was a thriving community of 500 people. It had a hotel, an undertaker, a saw mill, a gin and grist mill, two doctors, five general stores, and a drug store. The hotel was run by Mrs. C. L. Brant and did a thriving business until the automobile came into use. Mer- chants delivering goods to Appleton didn’t need to stay overnight if they were in a car. Mr. Ed Wilson, Mrs. Ralph Maxey, Miss Ruth Burris, and Miss Bobbye Cathey are pictured with their students. APPLETON 8 In the early days the Indians set- tled on the Illinois Bayou. They built their teepees on a high spot near the water where it never ran over. The first post office was estab- lished |uly 1, 1874 with Edward L. McCracken as the first postmaster. The first post office was located on Little Creek. Then it was moved to down- town Scottsville. Scottsville was once a bustling agriculture center for area farmers. It had two or more general stores, a barber shop, a cotton gin, grist mill, and blacksmith shops. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Caudle and pupils. The people of the community decided they needed a church and school. They built a two story build- ing, the Scottsville Masonic Lodge. Church and school classes were held in the lower part. They hand planed the planks for the ceiling. As the school grew to eight grades and the need for a new school was seen, a two room school was built 'A mile north of Scottsville. In 1930, when Scottsville consoli- dated with the Hector School, the three room brick building in the pic- ture at thfe left was built on highway 27, which was used for six grades until 1954 when they began bussing the students to Hector. 9 SCOTTSVILLE SCHOOL DAYS, THOSE GOOE Home economics classes were taught by Mrs. Mildred Hurley in this 1954 picture. The Juniors decorated the gym in a spring time motif. 18 As spring approaches the forest surrounding Hector blooms with several varieties of wildflower. The wild azalea is the most prominent in the Hector area. Burn 'em, Burn 'em was the battle cry as Hector started its new senior varsity football program this year with a bon- fire. The junior and senior classes and faculty enjoyed the 1974-75 Junior-Senior Banquet held in the school cafeteria proceeding the Senior Prom. Mrs. Norma Foster was the speaker. Her smiling face is an inspiration on the basketball court, in F.H.A. meetings, and in choir. We expect many good and great things from Sheila in the future. In Dale Felkins’ three years at Hector High School, he has displayed his leadership ability on the basketball court as well as being President of the Beta Club. Another honor was be- stowed on Dale when he was chosen as the F.H.A. beau. Ron Stark has attended Hector High School for twelve years. In this time, Ron has shown great dependability in every job he has been asked to undertake. With his optimistic outlook, Ron has also been an enthusiastic Beta Club member. Rena Boland is the Wildcat editor. She is a member of the Beta Club, Future Teachers of America, basketball squad, and Senior High Choir. She is the Future Home- makers of America, Federation IV President and a teachers aide. In her spare time, she likes to swim, fish, bowl, and play tennis. Music oriented, Rena also enjoys playing the piano. Outgoing is the word for Pam Coffman. Her activities include the Future Homemakers of America, the basketball squad, and the Future Teachers of America where she serves as president. Her future plans include being a special education teacher. Pam’s hobbies are camping, swimming, and bike riding. Delilah Athey strives for perfection in everything she attempts to do. Presently, she is involved with the FHA, FTA, and is on the Wildcat Staff and in the Beta Club. She has one more year to give to Hector High. After this, we expect to see a successful person regardless of her chosen profession. Janie Walker has perked up many meetings of the FHA, Beta Club, and FTA with her warm smile. She is the manager and bookkeeper of the Senior Girls Basketball Team. Watching football, listening to music, and reading are some of Janie’s pastimes. In Teresa Procter’s twelve years of schooling, she has been a ray of sunshine that has brightened many FHA, FTA, and Beta Club meetings. We know that Teresa will reach great heights in years to come. Charlie Hallum has a list of activities a mile long. He is the Junior Class President, a member of Beta Club, FTA, and is the bookkeeper for the boys’ basketball team. He is also musically inclined. Congratulations Charlie, on all of your accomplishments. 43 An excellent example of a sport-minded male student is Anthony Allison. Giving football and basketball all he has, we know Anthony will make it to the top in everything he undertakes. Sue Carruth has the spirit needed to be a member of the Senior High Cheerleaders and demonstrates this spirit at all Wildcat games. She is also an active participant in the F.H.A. and Senior High Choir. Sue enjoys playing the piano and organ. We expect Sue to be involved in many activities during the next two years. 44 Hollie Halsted puts her beautiful voice to use in the Senior High Choir. As a sophomore Hollie is a cheerleader and a member of the Future Homemakers of America. She enjoys hiking in the woods and swimming. Charlotte Hays is a senior. She is a member of the Future Teachers of America, Beta Club, Wildcat Staff, and is the President of the Future Homemakers of America. She is an avid supporter of the Wildcat basketball teams. In her spare time, Charlotte likes to sew, fish, and camp out. Scott Gary has two more years as a student at Hector. He is a devoted football player and is also an active member of the FTA and Wildcat Staff. Although Pam Hays is only a sophomore, her enthusiasm, pep, and excitement will equal anyone’s anywhere. She is captain of the Senior High Cheerleaders, a member of the FHA, and in the Senior High Choir. Pam’s future interests lie in the field of professional photography. Pam Kirk is a sophomore.
