On the outside, we can see a new driveway and sidewalk that add ease in con- trolling traffic and also add parking space. On the inside, we have many improvements. In the social studies room, we have added new desks that make our studying easier. In several rooms new lights brighten our studying hours. Our cafeteria has also been rearranged to make a proper place for showing films and to make a place for chorus class. Our student body has increased to 798 and our faculty numbers 35. In athletics, Mr. Cavanaugh has taken over as head coach, and Mr. Schroeder is the new athlet- ics director. Mr. Simic has been hired to coach the freshman team and to teach social studies. The G. A. A. has formed a volleyball and a basket- ball team in competition with other schools. Mr. Rutherford is sponsoring the newly formed science club which meets evenings. Third year Spanish was added to the curriculum. Once again we have elementary classes meeting in the high school building. The kindergarten and Mrs. Wilson ' s first grade are meeting on the basement floor. As the interior of our school has been im- proved, we have endeavored to keep up with this changing pace in our Seneca, We have added a personal touch by incorporating the Seniors ' sig- natures. The township purchased a camera for the staff and its members. Someone can be seen taking pictures at anytime, anywhere. With more candid shots, we can give outsiders an inside view of everyday activities. Mrs. EUenson also took all of our grade school pictures and put names on them for us. This book has also been enlarged by twelve interesting pages. The Seniors have gradually watched the changes take place in our school. Now, as they graduate, they hope you will enjoy this res ' ume ' of the 1966-67 school year. DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of Hebron High School, wish to dedicate this, the 1967 Seneca, to Mr. Phillip Lawson. As Sponsor of the Seneca and serv- ing this year as our class co-sponsor, he has given unselfishly of his time and his co-operation. But even more than this he has given us his friendship. Because of this and his years of teaching at Hebron High School, we would like to use this means of express- ing our appreciation. We hope this ded- ication to you, Mr. Lawson, will some- how express our thanks . The Class of 1967 MORRIS APLIN Majors: English, Science, Social Studies , Mathematics Minor: Art CURTIS J. SENIOR TRIP WAS HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR The Seniors anxioiasly waited to continue their trip. The Senior classes of Hebron, Morgan, and Kouts enjoyed a very fine trip this year. As in the past, the group went to New York and Washington D. C. A great time was had by all. Statue of Liberty WAS HIGHLIGHT OF DRAMATICS Ladies gossip on the street corner while George dreams in the moonlight. Emily The Senior Class Play, OUR TOWN, was unique and well acted. The play cast found that lack of scenery does not hinder the success of the play, if well acted. Mrs. Franzman, our Direc- tor, put much effort into making the play enjoy- able to the community. 15 PROM WAS HIGHLIGHT OF SOCIAL LIFE Pat Osburn Those who attended were engulfed in the mood of The Isle of Shangrila. Already, the new grade school building has been out- grown, and one of the first grade classes is being held in the basement of the high school. As the number of entire students grow, the size of the individual student seems to decrease! As we see in the photo to the right the most dangerous daily rou- tine is that of getting to your table at noon without pulling your tray dowoi on the top of your head, and obtaining your carton of milk without falling into the cooler. 42 ATHLETICS CROSS COUNTRY Varsity Hebron Opponents 26 33 Rensselaer 18 29 41 31 Washington Boone Grove 82 70 17 Morgan Daleville 57 Boone Grove 71 Wheeler 40 24 Andrean 63 Morocco 120 Wheatfield 44 15 Culver 19 27 42 28 Liberty Kouts 65 34 Lowell 31 103 St. Mary Hanover Central 47 16 Wheeler Jr. Varsity Hebron Opponents 19 39 Andrean 78 Wheatfield 48 42 35 St. Mary Lowell The start Meet. The hard-working Hawks placed third in the P . C . C . meet and ran a close second in the K . V . A . A . meet with Dave Steffel barely missing first place individually. Also, they ran what Coach Cavanaugh stated was probably Hebron ' s best showing in the Sec- tional meet. Our Jr. Varsity also showed great possibilities by winning one of their meets and running a close finish in the other . From the begianing of school this year, boys could be seen running, jumping, and lifting weights to be in shape when the season finally came. Paul Yeoman ran the dashes in the fine tradition set by his older brother. With Dave Steffel to set the pace in the distance races, our team pushes steadily on to many vic- tories. Larry Armstrong did a good job of jumping for us, too. These are just a few of the members that helped to make our team. They all worked hard and did a fine job. PAUL YEOMAN 45 BASEBALL The 1966 Hebron High School base- ball team had another successful sea- son, tying for the Porter County Con- ference Title with a 6-1 record. This marked the fifth year in a row the Hawks have won or tied for the confer- ence championship. The one loss snapped a 27 game winning streak com- piled over the last 4 years. Barry Olson led the Hebron attack with a . 435 batting average. Bill Smock led the Hawk mound staff and the county with a 6-1 record and an earned nin average of , 57. The Hawks gave the fans much exciting basketball as eight games were decided by five points or less, Hebron splitting the close decisions evenly with their opponents. In thrillers going to the final second the Hawks defeated Munster by one point and Rensselaer by two points. Boone Grove won the first meet- ing of the two clubs by three points in the South County Tourney and also took the Keg. However, in a second meeting Hebron won by three points and clinched the P.C.C. title. Jackson fell victim to Hebron in the championship game of the Porter Coun- ty Tourney by 5 points, the Hawks re- gaining the Keg. With the sweet victo- ries one must also taste bitter defeat and Hebron did just that in the River Forest game. With less than 30 sec- onds remaining, score tied and Hebron in possession of the ball, a John Cooper pass went awry and into the River Forest basket. With fine team play and excellent coaching the boys compiled a 12-7 record. These victo- ries include winning the Junior Varsity Tourney held in November. Freshman Mike Hofferth led the team in both re- bounds and points with 112 and 234 re- spectively. During the year there were three overtime games for the Junior Varsity. In these contests they won two and lost one, defeating Munster 42-39 and Boone Grove 41-39 in two overtimes. In the third overtime game, the Hawks were defeated by a fine Rensselaer squad 55-49. Next year many of these boys will be providing much excitement for the second game on Friday nights. These boys show future potential to carry on Hebron ' s fame as a great basketball team. Probably the most exciting game of the season was when our boys defeated the Valparaiso squad by four points. Since Valparaiso is so miich larger than Hebron, we are proud of the 36-40 score. Another high point of the season was when Hebron scored 61 points against Morocco, which is a high accu- mulation for a freshman team. The B squad compiled a 2-3 re- cord, suffering two of the defeats at the hands of a superior Lowell team. His strength in the high hurdles continued to help our team on the road to success. Curt vas as enthusiastic in baseball as he was in basketball. In fact one night he even played the full game before he took time to tell the coach he ' d broken his ankle during warm-up! John received quite a bit of recognition in both baseball and basketball. As a matter of fact, River Forest recognizes him as a scorer on their team ! He ' ll never be convinced Friday the 13th isn ' t unlucky- ' , huh John? Taking time out from his other extra curricular activities, Steve put forth his best efforts and TIME to add to our cross couiitry team. Isn ' t that right, Jo? ! Tim was perhaps the most improved runner on the track and cross country teams. Just as faithful as a postman, he never missed daily training- -sleeting, snowing, raining, or shining. Terry was a member of the track and cross country teams this year. Maybe his wild colors gave him so much get up an ' go ! ! As well as being on the PCC baseball team, Barry had some tricky manuvers on the hardwood- -while playing. He seemed to have a little difficulty staying far enough away from the opposing team ' s players ! LEADERS IN SPORTS Norby came through cross country, track, and basketball with good results. Working hard every single minute, he couldn ' t find enough hours in the day. Surely Norby could never be called a lackadaisical guy!? Ron lettered in baseball this year. He really worked hard to make our team as successful as it was by playing right field. Bill was on the PCC baseball team and was the re- cepient of the M. E. Dinsmore award in basketball. Even though he played a great role in our athletic program, we ' re still in doubt as to whether he was more enthusiastic about sports or Mr. Panazzo ' s jokes to and from the ball games ! Tom was a member of the track and cross country teams, lettering in both. He showed us what it really takes--lots and lots of stamina and hard work ! Larry was ah enthusiastic participant in baseball this year. He served as catcher the latter part of the season. He also made the all conference second team for his work in the season ' s begin- ning as second baseman. Dave starred on the track and varsity cross country teams. He was front runner in the distance events, doing quite well. If you don ' t believe us, just ask him. Right Dave!? Paul ran cross country and received high honors as a hurdler and sprinter. He also served as a manager of the athletic department. We ' re sure that he helped to set the pace with speed and grace in true Hebron fashion. 51 CHEERLEADERS Peggy Hefner Jane Corwin Linda Nethery The Cheerleaders showed many moods. There were times when the team looked like champs as the hitting was very productive in the Washington and Wheeler games. The pitching and defense were very effective in the Boone Grove and Morgan gamies. The mark of a real champ is to win the close ones and the little Hawks came through on the top side in the Kouts and Morgan contests, both decided by one run. No official scores were kept, but the team finished second in the three-way meets. In the county and south county they finished far from the front. The boys discovered that running a mile up and down hills is very exhausting. Top runners were Ricky Shupe, Roger Knopf, and Mike Steffel. The junior high track team again had a successful season. With several boys re- turning from last year ' s team the cinder - boys were strong in both the running and field events. Some of the best performances were turned in by Tim Smok, Dale Thomp- son, Gary Scroggins, Ricky Shupe, Jeff Riggs, and John Duggleby. Twice a year the band gives a concert, one near Christmas and one in the Spring. Also, the full band gives a marching show at several basketball games each year. Many of the band students participate in the N. I. S. B. O. V. A. solo and ensemble contest each year. In the spring, the band participates in the State Band Con- test if they place first at the district contest the preceding week. It is to the credit of our school system that our school is able to have such a fine organization. During the year they sing at the winter concert, spring concert, and the district and state band and chorus contest. They sing folk songs with a guitar and piano accompaniment. SPECIAL CHORUS Accompanist Sandi Larsen 59 PEP BAND The Pep Band is made up of members of the regular band. Their purpose is to generate enthusiasm at the basketball games. Also under the dir- ection of Mr. Bunning, it has provided much entertainment for the fans. JUNIOR HIGH BAND The Junior High Band, consisting of seventh and eighth graders, is an im- portant part of our school. Here the students first begin to realize their responsibilities as band members and begin to train conscientiously for their obligation in the high school band. The band members participate in annual spring and winter concerts and the dis- trict band contest. Their director, Mr. Bunning, has had much patience with this group and has developed a fine band. 60 F.HA This year was the first full year as a club for the F. H. A. The club undertook numerous activities. At the beginning of the year a Brownie Point for F. H. A. day was spon- sored. At Christmas the girls went caroling. They were accompanied by Mrs. Berrier and their student teacher, Miss Phebeus. A Christ- mas exchange and party was also held in December. During March a number of the girls visited an old folks home. As a fund raising proj- ect, cookbooks containing recipes from home economics teachers throughout the nation were sold. All in all the year was a busy one. G.A.A. This year the G. A. A. is again a member of the state organization. The girls plan to compete in volley- ball contests with other schools this year, instead of basketball. Other changes include the revision of our point system, raising it 150 points, and the appointment of sportheads for each sport. These girls try to encourage the members to participate in athletics more. SAFETY PATROL The Safety Patrol did a fine job this year in helping the children across the highway and streets. These boys have an excellent safety record and have done a fine job for the community as well as the school. BOOSTER CLUB The Booster Club of Hebron High School backed our teams and created school spirit. Throughout the season these students showed good co -opera - 62 SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club was a new organization this year. The pur- pose of the club is to stimulate interest in science. This year the Science Club took on the re- sponsibility of sponsoring the local Science Fair. The club be- came a member of the National Science Fairs of America. This year each member was required to present a scientific report at a meeting. Some of these re- ports were on relativity, the plasma state, rats, antimatter, rockets, and laser beams. The president is Dave Martin, vice president is Paul Yeoman, and secretary-treasurer is Carolyn Wiltfang. The club is under the direction of Mr. Rutherford. tion, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm. The theme for the county tourney, Our Hawks Play the Olympian Way took much work and added color and ex- citement to the tourney games. Mr. Schick, the Booster Club sponsor, worked hard and long to make the club an important part of student activities. 63 STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is a very im- poitant part of our school. It spon- sors many activities and dances, en- courages leadership and scholarship programs, and strives for a better understanding between the students and the faculty. Our Council spon- sors such activities as a Red and White Day to generate enthusiasm at the opening of our basketball season, programs for special occa- sions such as Thanksgiving for deep thinking, and such scholarship pro- grams as a Scholarship Week. This year ' s officers are Mike Mul- lins, President; Paul Yeoman, Vice- President; Peg Hefner, Secretary; Randy Werner, Treasurer. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Honor Society is an organiza- tion to promote leadership, citizen- ship, character, service, and scholar- ship. This year our Honor Society inducted twelve students who pos- sessed these qualities, thus bringing the toal membership to twenty -four. Among the numerous projects the Society sponsored were the March of Dimes Campaign, Easter Program, Baccalaureate and Commencement ushering and sending packages to Hebron G. I ' s overseas. We also had the privilege of initiating a Society into the Morgan School System. 64 HAWKER STAFF We present to the students each month We type half a line and then erase, a Hawker That usually seirves only to clutter his locker. Now what kind of gratitude is that to show For we really work hard on this you know. Mrs. Gwin has developed a nervous case. But this year ' s staff as the ones before Has served the school for one year more. And we ' ve done a good job you must confess Or at least we ' ve tried to do our best. SENECA STAFF The Seneca Staff started early in the school year to compile the Seneca. Sometimes we didn ' t seem to accomplish much, and we had to do and re-do many pages. How- ever, we have finally managed to finish the yearbook without errors - we hope! We hope you have enjoyed it. 65 Each spring the students from grades seven through twelve elect a student body president. It is the president ' s job to preside over the Student Council. Mike MuUins headed the Council again this year and he should be commended for the fine job he has done. The girls that represented Hebron High School as delegates to Hoosier Girls ' State were chosen on the basis of academic standing and interest in government. The dele- gates received much valuable infor- mation about our Indiana government in action. The Boys ' State delegates were also chosen on the same basis as the Girl Staters. These representatives attended the school in Bloomington, too. They also received much knowl- edge of our various governmental systems. The D. A. R. Good Citizen Award is given to the Senior Girl possess- ing qualities in leadership, service, dependability, and patriotism. Communism, Threat to Our Constitution was the speech that won this year ' s oratorical contest. This contest is given by the American Legion to create enthusiasm for and patriotism towards our Constitution. All of the Senior girls take the Betty Crocker Homemaker Test and the girl with the highest rating ob- tains the Homem aker of Tomorrow Award. .Jm 1 ■i THESE WERE STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT Mike Mullins BOYS ' Dave Steffel BETTY CROCKER AWARD Linda Osburn GIRLS ' Lynn Hough, Peg Hefner, Betty Schrag 66 HONORED STATE Mike Mullins FIRST SEMESTER HONOR ROLL GRADE TWELVE -Constance Heine, Michael Mullins, Carolyn Wiltfang, and Paul Yeoman.
