Cross Country The Bears won their District cross country meet by scoring 27 over Exeter with 31. Ten teams competed. Individual placing at District: Corliss, 3rd, Long 5th, Clark 7th: Sterba 12th: and Behring 20th. The Bears placed eighth at the State Meet. The Bears were third out of 10 schools at the Tecumseh Invitational, second out of 12 at the David City Invitational, and won their Randall Smith Invitational with 11 schools competing. Season's best times were: Corliss, 16:00: Long, 16:12: Clark, 16:32, Sterba, 16:33g Behring, 17:57. Best times for the girls' cross country were: Walters, 15:20 and Burkey, 15:35. Wins were over Tri-County 14-7: Wilber 21-20: Sutton 40-O, Milford 7-3, Harvard 57-0, Sandy Creek 30-13, and Henderson 31-16. Losses were to Geneva 0-20, Superior 3-7, and Tri-County 6-10 in the Conference Play-Off Game held at Hebron. Jeff Kripal led in passing with 17 of 69 for 330 yards and 3 TD's. Gerdes carried 184 times for 992 yards and 9 touchdowns: Degenhardt carried 90 for 550 yards, 4 TD'sg Thieme carried 67 for 390 yards, 4 TD's. Kleider received 6 passes for 136 yards, 1 TD: Larry Fink caught 4 for 92 yds., 1 TD: Kent Cottam caught 2 for 61 yds., 2 TD's. Saathoff punted 35 for 1218, averaging 34.8. Cottam returned 17 punts for 245 yards, averaging 14.4. Dana kicked off 37 for 1659 yds. to average 44.8. Jeff Kripal intercepted 5 passes for 64 yds., 1 TD: and Larry Fink caught 4 for 72 yards. Degenhardt returned 8 kick-offs to average 17.8, and Larry Fink returned 5 to average 20.5. Leading Tacklers were Mitchell, Schardt, Jerry Kripal, and Gerdes. Named to All-Conference honors were: Greg Mitchell, Linebacker: Jerry Kripal, Offensive Line: Bruce Schardt, Defensive Line: Jeff Kripal, Defensive Back: Brent Gerdes, Offensive Back: Phil Saathoff, Punter. John Kleider and Max Degenhardt were Honorable Mention. All-State Honorable Mention were Greg Mitchell and Jerry Kripal. The Junior Varsity had wins over Tri-County 12-0, Fairbury 16-14, Sutton 14-0, Sandy Creek 36-20, Superior 22-18 and losses to Southern 6-8 and Geneva 14-36.
