Eighteen members of the graduating class received scholarships and awards. Seniors honored for maintaining an average of 90 or higher were: Kim Bacon, Nick Hendrickson, John Kleider, Jeff Kripal, Nancy McLaughlin, Sheila Timmerman, Clint Werner and Kelli Wiedel. Kim Bacon received an Educational Foundation Scholarship from Southeast Community College, Fairbury. Lori Baker was given a Special Abilities Scholarship in vocal music from Doane College. The Butler Scholarship given for high scholastic accom- plishment by Doane College was awarded to Teresa Brewer. Karen Gerdes received a Special Abilities Scholarship in the area of athletics from Kearney State College. Dana Hulse was given an Educational Foundation Scholarship by Southeast Community College, Milford. Jeff Kripal, class Valedictorian, received a Regents Scholarship from the University of Nebraska and was also winner of the Elks Foundation Scholarship. Nancy McLaughlin received scholarships from Hastings College for science and for general scholastic ability. Doane College announced a Trustee Achievement Award Scholarship given to Annette Randolph. Jennifer Reinke received a scholarship from Joseph's College of Beauty. Becky Templin was awarded an Educational Foundation Scholarship by Southeast Community College, Lincoln. Tina Wise was awarded two scholarships from Peru State College for academic accomplishments and for ability in art and instrumental music. Sheila Timmerman, class Salutatorian, was selected by the University of Nebraska to be enrolled in honors courses. Jannel Wiedel received a Parish Priest Scholarship from Marymount College in Salina. Losses were to Geneva 0-20, Superior 3-7, and Tri-County 6-10 in the Conference Play-Off Game held at Hebron. Jeff Kripal led in passing with 17 of 69 for 330 yards and 3 TD's. Gerdes carried 184 times for 992 yards and 9 touchdowns: Degenhardt carried 90 for 550 yards, 4 TD'sg Thieme carried 67 for 390 yards, 4 TD's. Kleider received 6 passes for 136 yards, 1 TD: Larry Fink caught 4 for 92 yds., 1 TD: Kent Cottam caught 2 for 61 yds., 2 TD's. Saathoff punted 35 for 1218, averaging 34.8. The varsity ended their 15-5 season by competing at Regionals for the third straight year. The Lady Bears were 9-1 in regular-season play with wins over Tri-County 15-12, 16-145 Nelson 15-2, 15-5, Sandy Creek 13-15, 15-12, 15-75 Harvard 15-5, 15-12, Henderson 15-7, 15-10, Sutton 15-6, 15-63 Deshler 15-10, 14-16, 15-133 Fairbury 15-4, 15-115 Superior 15-4, 15-5. The only loss was to Geneva 10-15, 10-15. At the Milford Tourney, the girls defeated Milford 15-3, 13-15, 15-8 and Henderson 15-5, 15-9 but lost the final match to Centennial 10-15, 7-15. Hebron beat Tri-County 15-2, 15-11 in the first game of the Conference Tourney but then lost to Milford 6-15, 12-15 and Geneva 7-15, 10-15. At the District Tournament, the Lady Bears beat Sutton 15-11, 15-4 and Harvard 15-7, 11-15, 16-14 before defeating Hastings St. Cecilia 15-13, 12-15, 15-10 to claim the District Championship and earn the right to compete at Regionals, where they lost to Meridian 6-15, 12-15. State Runner-Up The girls' basketball team was undefeated in regular season play for the second consecutive year, pushing its conference win streak to 27 in a row. This year the Lady Bears defeated Friend 66-53, Henderson 60-43, Sutton 54-42, Sandy Creek 56-47, Harvard 54-35, Superior 50-40, Tri-County 59-52, Fairbury 54-30, Geneva 66-56, Deshler 46-34, and Wilber 40-35. Hebron won the Southern Nebraska Conference Tournament, beating Harvard 47-39, Sutton 45-31, and Tri-County 44-41. In District action they defeated Geneva 56-50, Sandy Creek 54-31, and Doniphan 43-32. They then defeated Humboldt 32-21 in regional play to earn a second trip to State. At State, the Lady Bears defeated Anselmo-Merna 39-35, Conestoga 38-28, and lost in the championship game to Randolph 42-39. The varsity finished with a 20-1 record. The B team was 2-63 the freshmen were 1-2. Karen Gerdes was first team All State in Class C. She also was selected second team All State, All Class. Kim Hissong was Honorable Mention All State. Karen was also selected to the Class C All Tournament team. Karen and Kim were first team All-Conference, Lisa Poppe and Nancy McLaughlin were second team All-Conference, and Janeen Holzinger was Honorable Mention. Karen was selected Most Valuable Player. Nancy McLaughlin won the Hustler award, Kim Hissong was selected Most Improved Player. Karen finished the year with 447 points and 317 rebounds. She shot 6404 from the free throw line. They defeated Belleville 53-45 in the first round of the Crossroads Tournament and lost to Sabetha 41-59 in the second round. In the Conference Tournament, they lost to Sutton 35-39 in the first game. ln the District Tournament at Aurora they defeated Sutton 50-41 in first-round play but lost to Doniphan 45-47 in their second game. Mitch Hofmann led the Bears in scoring with 248 points, averaging 14.2 points per game. He averaged 71.6 percent on free throws made. Jerry Kripal had 174 points and Mark Dana had 154 points. Leading the Bears in rebounds was Jerry Kripal with a total of 156 rebounds from 64 offensive rebounds and 92 defensive rebounds.
