At the Senior Banquet the school year was amusingly lampooned by a cleverly pieced together tape recording featuring a crea- ture from outer space encountering familiar Hebron names and noises. The Baccalaureate Service was held in the Hebron Community Baptist Church on Sun-r day afternoon, june l. 'l'here's a VVhole WVorld in Your Mind was the title of the ad- dress delivered on this first of the formal Com- mencement week activities by the Reverend Doc- tor Percy L. Vernon, Honorary l9'56. On Friday afternoon, June 6, the annual base- ball game with Deering High School was the first event on the two day Commencement pro- gram. After the Headmaster's 'l'ea the seniors, their parents and friends, and alumni gathered in Sargent Gymnasium for the Commencement Banquet. Musical entertainment was offered by the Band and Clee Club and highlighted by several appearances of the -Iaybirds. Dr. l.ouis 0. Coxe, Pierce Professor of English at Bow- doin College, delivered an amusing and thought provoking address titled Great Expectations on what the seniors could and could not ex- pect of college life. Peter Hepburn, President of the Class of 1958, presented the gift of the class to Mr. Allen, a check to be used for the purchase of books for the Classics, English, and History Departments, and the annual gift to the Academy School. Mr. Allen introduced three members of the faculty for whom this Com- mencement marked the completion of ten years of service to the Academy. As Messrs. Hall, Hel- wig, and West came to the platform Mr. Allen spoke briefly of their work at the School. The evening was climaxed by the announcement and presentation of the Commencement Awards and Prizes. The Club made great strides in its extension ol reper- toire, development of soloists, and especially i11 its unison execution. A small but enthusiastic group of veterans from the 1957 Club greeted the new director, Mr. Shea, at the tryouts and first rehearsals in October. Under his capable direction the group reached a surprisingly high standard of performance at the Christmas Vespers and at a Christmas concert with the Wlaynllete School in Portland. ln the spring term the club really hit its stride i11 concerts at Kents I-lill and Hebron and a guest appearance at Lew- iston. The llaybirds, an augmented double quar- tet, operated along with the Club and provid- ed lively entertainment at functions sponsored by the School as well as at most of the regu- lar Clee Club concerts. The Hebronian This year six lively issues of the HICBRON- IAN were printed at a high level of publish- ing standard. From first issue to last the paper carried a punch and style that never let its readers down. Special highlights were the second number, called the Philatelic Spe- cial, with its extensive coverage ol the activi- ties ol' the Hebron Stamp Club and the hobby ol' sllllllp collecting, and the third number carrying the atmouncement ol' the Hebron .Xcademy Development Fund. Managing lidi- tor Fred Grant was ably supported by a hard working crew ol writers, cartoonists and pho- tographers, many ol' them underclassmen. The HICBRONIAN was awarded a Med- alistu rating' by the Columbia Scholastic Press .Xssociation among school publications for lSl57. This is the highest award that can be given and was shared by Hebron with only two other preparatory schools. Record Club For the Iirst time since the Record Club was Iounded twelve years ago limited member- ship was instituted. This change in policy was done to produce greater spirit in the Club by having fewer members participate more intensely. Added variety in Club programs brought additional new spirit with the usual classical music presentations sharing some time with folk ballads, operas, and jazz re- cordings. Bob Scholnick was especially ei- lective in his interest and leadership in jazz music appreciation and understanding. The overwhelming sttccess ol' three record Iairs plus the generous donations ol' Mr. ilohn C. Pickard ol the Hebron Board ol Trustees gave the Club the greatest increase in recordings in years. The Club, under the untiring direc- tion ol' Mr. Freiday, completed perhaps its most productive year. The Record Club also contributed heavily to school lile. The classical and jazz record lending libraries operated throughout the year and were heavily patronized. Special music for the annual Christmas banquet and the Latin play Miles Cloriosus was capably .- 'fl 7 J' ..f ' . ' handled from the resources ol' the club li- brary. A special program was presented to the entire School in honor of Lincoln's birth- day. On this occasion outstanding recordings ol readings of Lincoln's speeches and poems about Lincoln were interwoven with a com- mentary by President Bill lVilliams. The climax ol' the year cattle at the linal meeting ol' the oilicers. President Bill Wil- liams, Vice President Ladd Morgan, Secretary Fred Grant, and 'Treasurer Dick Givens voted to purchase a new record player to be a per- manent possession oli the Club lor its concerts and presentations. Com- posed almost entirely of boys who had just learned to play football at Hebron or grad- uates of the and Lightweight teams this was one of the most spirited and determined football teams Hebron has produced. :Xl- though unable to win a game the Team never gave up in its attempt to be a winner. ln many ways it was a winner by its refusal to quit despite crucial injuries, lack of depth, and constant to-ugh luck. After a one week pre-school conditioning grind and one week of practice alter the be- ginning of school the Team went to Bridgton for its Hrst game. Inexperience was the de- ciding factor in this opening loss. A swift Kimball Union eleven opened the home sched- ule on the next Saturday and although Butch Smith scored the team's first touchdown of the season in the second period the New Hamp- shire visitors ran away with the game in the second half. Against Bowdoin Freshmen a charged up Hebron line, led by tackle Mike Briggs, stopped Bowdoin's ground attack, but the completion of a number of sensational long passes turned the tide in Bowdoin's fa- vor. In perhaps the best game of the year time was the deciding factor as Kents Hill scored a lil to 7 victory on its home field, in the re- newal of an old State of Maine rivalry. The winners dominated the game during the first Football half but llebron battled back in the second half for one touchdown on battering line plunges by Mickey Blum and was on the way to a tying touchdown when the game ended. The Team's spirit did not wane after the one sided contest with Colby Freshmen and lixeter was given a still' battle on Andrews Field. Urged on by the overwhelnung sup- port of the entire student body and its own desire the Big Green opened the game by marching to a touchdown on a solid series of steady gains. The depth and speed of the visitors finally turned the tide but only after Mr. Switzer's limited forces had played them- selves almost to exhaustion in this hard fought two touchdown loss. Visiting New Hampton in the last game of the season, the Big Greenls offense showed at its best for a season's high of three touch- downs in one game but the home team also unleashed a potent offense that resulted in a high scoring game and eventual victory for New Hampton. The showing of Hebron's ol'- fense in this game was especially gratifying to coaches and players after all the long hours of drilling and hard work. lf next year's Varsity has one half the de- termination that Cloacli Switzer and his Team showed this year it should be rewarded by victory. l.ed by the redoubtable Captain Peter Hepburn the team that deserved to win exhibited a high degree of sportsman- ship, spirit, and raw courage. The Team, without tlte experienced players of the previous year and with a tnore testing schedule, turned in some excellent performances. Early season practices found keen competi- tion for a number of the positions and the line up of the front line especially was often subject to change as players advanced in their skill in the game. After reeling oll' two suc- cessive shut outs over the Bates Soccer Club and M.C.l. the Team found itself up against a spirited Kents Hill side in a game won by Hebron in a sudden death overtime on a for- tunate goal scored out of a scrimmage in front of the Kents Hill nets. After defeating Eryeburg by a ti to 2 score the Team INCL its lirst defeat at the hands ol an experienced Colby Soccer Club, 2 to ll, in a very well played and hard fought contest. Veteran half- backs Bruce Ellis and Bob McCoy turned in outstanding performances in this game. Af- ter an exciting tie game with Holderness on the Greenwood Mountain field and a li to 0 whitewash ol' Fryeburg a determined Kents Hill team came from behind to inflict the second loss on the Hebron booters. Another shut out win over M.C.1. preceded the final game of the season at New Hampton where the Team fought the undefeated New Hamp- shire school to a standstill, narrowly missed several goals, and finally allowed a goal in the last quarter of play. Captain Bruce Ellis led this group of ex- tremely hard kickers from his center halfback position. Laszlo Dudas, from Hungary, served as an inspiration to all and although hamper- ed by a leg injury took scoring honors with 10 goals front his center forward spot. Summy Burr, Bob Nllasson, Bill NVilliams, and Rudy von der Goltz each scored 4 goals while six other players took part in the scoring, adding 8 goals between them. Bob McCoy, Ray Brown and .Ion Ferry ably llanked Captain Ellis as halfbacks. .lim Harberson and Kent Graham turned in outstanding performances as regular fttllbacks while sophomore goalie l,arry Trimble was credited with fl shut outs and some sensational stops, especially in the game with the Bates Soccer Club, Next year's Team will be led by Co- Captains elect Summy Burr and .lim Harber- son, supported by lour other returning letter- men. Behind them will be a season in which it took the best play of any squad to over- come the spirited ISJ57 Team. NVith only two returning lettermen the Squad was composed largely of last year's runners. A 28 to 27 loss at Fryeburg opened the season. However, the Team, led by Co-Captain lim Horton, converted this defeat into a conclusive victory in the return match over the Hebron hills by a score of 20 to 35. A mid season sltnnp was broken when Co-Captain Bill Kimball led the team to a decisive 23 to 37 victory over Kents Hill and this was followed by the defeat of Bridg- ton Academy and Bowdoin Freshmen by wide margins. Two newly created events highlighted the final part of the season. The first was the running of the initial Maine Preparatory School Cham- pionship in which the Team finished a close third. The second was the creation of the first annual all Hebron cross country race. Under the enthusiastic direction of Mr. Leavitt a large and colorful field went the distance with Chet Pike of the football squad upsetting favorite Henry Pope and the dopesters by his clear cut victory. This event climaxed a year of progress and special interest in Cross Country at Hebron. 11' 1 Co-Captains Horton and Kimlmll VARSITY l.1i'l l'liRlvI1iN Co-Captains A M t-is Holrrt IN XVILLIAM KINIBALI. Under his able direction many former .l.V. players rapidly gained proliciency and played important parts in the success ol' this year's 'l'eam. This made the Team a special one lor it was almost entirely the product ol' the Hebron hockey system involving coaching and competition at three distinct levels. Highlights ol' the season included decisive victories over lixeter and Kimball Union, a streak ol hve games without a loss in mid sea- son, and two exciting and closely fought games with CBI Champion Melrose and a fine Belmont Hill team on home ice at the end ol' the season. The Big Green skaters also enjoyed the distinction ol being the only team to give the all winning and high scoring Colby Freslnnen a close light all season. Be- lore injuries to key players cut down its elli- ciency, the Team enjoyed a record ol only two losses in the first ten games. A special feature ol' the season was a two day trip to Dartmouth where the win over Kimball Un- ion was scored and a close game was played with the Dartmouth Freshmen. Co-Captains Bob McCoy and Bruce lillis and defenseman joe lily provided the veteran backbone of the Team, and were outstanding all season. Former ll.V.'s Norm Farrar, 'lim Harberson and Dave Lougee made great strides as lorwards and were joined by new' eomers lid Graham and next year's Captain elect Ray Brown. Farrar led in scoring. .Ioe Bellavanee turned in an excellent job as goalie and lluteh Smith proved valuable as penalty killer and utility lorward and scored some crucial goals. One of these losses was a heartbreaker in which Hebron lost to Exeter by a fraction of a point. The Team turned in its best per- formance at the Kents Hill Carnival, captur- ing three of the four events and taking the trophy for the second successive year. Su- perior prowess in cross country highlighted the Team's effort in all the meets. Another high point of the season was the breaking of two old records. Captain Bill Kimball lowered the old cross country course record by more than two minutes. Sarge Good- child cut three seconds off the old downhill mark, a record that had been standing for several years. Captain Kimball, in addition to his cross country prowess, helped the Team greatly in downhill and slalom. Seniors Phil Lewitt and Sarge Goodchild excelled in jumping and downhill. juniors Dave Horn and Peter VVil- liams were outstanding four event skiers with Williams scoring well in the downhill against top notch skiers at the New linglands and Horn placing First in slalom and downhill in most of the meets throughout the season. john Redmond and Dick Friedman gave plen-I ty of support in downhill and slalom while Sky Thurber and Kent Graham specialized in cross country with excellent results. The Team was greatly crippled just before the New Englands when both Goodchild and Horn suffered leg injuries, thus removing two of the top potential point gatherers from the squad for this climax meet. Not to be left out of the record breaking the 200-yard free style relay team of Eric Malm, Dave Vinal, Mickey Blum and Captain Lee broke another seven year old School record against the Bowdoin Fresh- men. Against Cheverus High School Roger Thurber, another sophomore, established a School record in the new event, the 100-yard orthodox breaststroke. The ultimate olf team work and driving spirit was required to produce the unified effort that placed the Big Green so high in the New Englands, where seven of the ten lettermen, hve of these underclassmen, won medals and blue ribbons. This was an ex- citing display of team power. In this meet Dave Vinal turned in a time of l:39.7 in the 150-yard medley, thus breaking botl1 Hebron and pool records. The New linglands marked the culmina- tion of a season which saw the Hebron swim- mers lower records on seventeen different oc- casions and establish a tradition of hard work and pride in their team and coach which fu-- ture Swimming teams at Hebron can proudly emulate. With the courts slow to recover from the long winter season the Team did its early prac- ticing on the Stanley Arena courts and was able to start the competitive season off with a four match winning streak. Included in these victories were two wins over Bowdoin Freshmen, one a 9 to 0 whitewash, and an 8 to l victory over Colby Freshmen, the first win over this rival in a number of years. This streak was fol- lowed by an outstanding match on the He- bron courts against an undefeated Holderness team. The Team came close to ending the three year I-lolderness winning streak before bowing by a 5 to 4 score. Statistics show that the Team won 825 of the H49 games played, a ratio consistent with the overall match record turned in. Captain Summy Burr was outstanding for his con- sistently steady play. Promising sophomore Peter Trafton held down the number one spot in several matches. A pleasant surprise was the sharp play of senior jim Horton. Pre-season practices had indicated many weak- nesses in the twelve events with only two returning lettermen to be counted on for sure points, hurdler Dick La- cey and sprinter John Peterson. But Coaches Helwig and Leavitt guided the Team to a winning season and the Maine Championship by building depth to replace first place points. A long lingering blanket of snow and ice hampered early preparations and the Team went to the Exeter Relays without having used the track. In this informal meet much more potential strength was revealed than had been expected. As the season progressed new winners began to appear, particularly among underclass members of the Team. The dual meet schedule began with a one sided defeat by Colby Freshmen, followed by a tough loss to M.C.I. by the margin of a frac- tion of a point. But then the Big Green de- feated five teams while losing only to Bow- aswuolll doin Freshmen and New Hampton. 'I'he 4th place scored in the Class B section of the New Iinglands was a satisfactory performance and then the Team wound up the season with the big win at Colby for the Maine Champion- ship. Outstanding all season was Captain Dick Lacey who scored ll6 lffl points in a variety of events, the high and low hurdles, the high jump, broad jump, and discus. He also set a new Hebron track record in the 120 yard high hurdles. Other leading point scorers were Kit Nissen with 43 points scored in the dashes, Sky Thurber with 39 points scored in the discus and distance events, and Bill Wfilliams, winner of the mile race at the State Cham- pionship, with 35 points scored in the mile and half mile. X'Vitl1 more than half of this season's letter- men being joined by an equally large group of underclass squad members, including iour members of a junior relay team that set a new Hebron and State record for the event, pros- pects for an outstanding track year next sea- son are bright. Certainly the Team of 1958 came a long way in development and achieve- ment. First row: Allen, Coen. Peck, Myers, Nlalm, li., Godard, Goodman. Second mtv: Belmont. This new and unique addition to the Hebron athletic scene was organized at the beginning ol the spring term by Mr. Helwig and directed in its activities by Mr. Ganter. This group existed lor those boys who were especially interested in body building and training, lor those non athletically inclined who needed to develop the grace, stamina, and silhouette that comes from gymnastic exercise, and lor those who could find no other niche in the spring athletic program. liach day the group was given a rigorous calisthenics schedule ol increasing intensity. This was followed by endurance running, swimming and swimming instruction, and finally competitive re- lays in various swimming, running and gymnastic events. Some work was done with gymnastic apparatus such as parallel bars and weights. XVithin the group progress was stimulated by the leadership and prodding ol the more experienced members and within the School the tiymnasts became known lor their laithlulness and spirit. The introduction ol' the Cvmnasts into the Hebron athletic scene was a significant happening in school lile at Hebron in 1058. lfirxl rnzv: King, von Ruscnvingc, T., Priest, D., Grimnlcr. lilv, Whcninnn, I.ynch. mil, .
