Commencement PILCI.-Xl. SENIOR AC'1'IVI'l'IliS began this year with the annual Senior Picnic, again held at Camp Timanous. Activity of a celebrant nature continued at the Senior Ban- quet. This allair was made historic by the ap- pearance of a living facsimile of the l'hree Sisters picture which hangs on the wall of the dining room. Armed with many verses, these three portrayed in music the history of the school year. On Sunday alternoon, june 2, the Bacca- laureate Service was held in the Hebron Com- munity Haptist Church. The Reverend Doctor Percy L. Vernon, Honorary 1956, gave an in- spiring talk on the Measure ol' Success. Commencement events were initiated on Fri- day afternoon, -lune 7, by the annual baseball game with Deering High School, won by the visitors only after some long hits to mark the occasion were registered by Hebron. Following the Hcadmastcr's Tea the Commencement Ban- quet was held in the Gymnasium. Musical en- tertainment was furnished by the Band, the double quartet known as the -laybirds, and the Glee Club. Lambert Webber, President of the Senior Class, presented a check to Mr. Allen as the gilt ol' the Class of l957, to be used to pur- chase an oil painting for the Academy. The Reverend Frederick H. 'l'hompson, D.D., de- livered the main address of the evening and then Mr. Allen announced the year ending awards as voted by the faculty. After two weeks ol practice, one ol' which was the first Hebron pre-school practice session in foot- ball, the Green played host to Bridgton Academy. Three plays alter the opening whistle two of the Team's sorely needed experienced linemen were injured, with one lost lor the rest ol the season. This, combined with injuries suffered to two more key players in a pre-season scrinnnage seriously hampered the plans of the coaches and strained the resources ol the squad. Nevertheless, in the next game at Bowdoin, the Team showed up well and came much closer to victory than the final score indicated. One Hebron touchdown was nullified by a penalty and a long run by Co-Captain -Iefl' Manning to the Bowdoin ten yard line was followed by a dishearten- ing penalty and another scoring opportunity was lost. When the powerful M.C.l. team invaded Andrews Field the Team pllt up a fine battle before being downed. Alter an evenly lought first period in which Hebron narrowly missed a passing touchdown, the Prepsters cashed in on a break alter a long Hebron punt was nullified by a penalty and the following kick was returned lor a touchdown. The superior man power and experience of' the visitors told the story in the second hall. The Crea-n's hrst tally of' the season came in the next game against the Colby Freshmen. He- bron led, 7 to fi, at hall lime, but t1olby's greater strength meant the difference in the last two periods. ln the hrst Hebron-lixeter lootball game in many years the Team ran into a highly successful and undeleated Exeter squad, bill managed to register two touchdowns in the final quarter, hall- back 'Iohn Mcllwain getting both ol these. New Hampton had too niuch passing skill and trickery lor the Big Green in the season's finale. ln this game, as in all the others, the Team never stopped trying, and the final touchdown of the year was a Hebron one, in the closing minutes ol the game. A lull five game schedule of' games was played by the so--'called group within the squad. Decisions were dropped to Lewiston, lidward l.ittle and llrunswick l-Iigh School and Fryeburg Academy by scores of' ll-IZ, 25-IS, 27-17 and 20-0, respectively, a win coming over the -l.V.'s of Stephens High School ol Rumford. 7-fl. Next year's Team will have five returning letterinen. It is hoped that with this nucleus and under the leadership ol Captain'-elect and stellar center Pete Hepburn the never tiring efforts of Mr. Switzer and his stall will be rewarded with victory. Certainly, this year's hard luck group, un- der the leadership of Co-Captains Gleason and Manning, never stopped trying in its efforts to achieve that end. Although on the losing end on both occasions it was generally agreed that the game with a strong Wlebster team and the second game with a heavy and reinforced Kents Hill J.V. team found the Reserves at their best. Captain Ike Borofsky led the run- ning game of a spunky backfield while sophomore Chet Pike and freshman Bob Brown stood out as pass receivers. With great improvement in technique and execution of funda- mentals evidenl as the season wore on, the Team went through its paces with vigor and enjoyment. ' xx U Wi '40 ar ity Soccer Hebron's first Soccer team made Hebron sports his- tory. Under the direction of Mr. West and with high spirit and enthusiasm, the Soccer team was able to rc- cord a six win and one loss record. The drive of the experienced Spanish contingent, con- sisting of Chris Macpherson, Pat Tracey, Peter Giese- mann, Rudi Von der Goltz, and Captain Dieter Notte- bohm hellwd to get the Team under way, and to estab- lish the spirit and desire to play top notch soccer. By the end of the season this group recorded a total of 255 goals Ollt of the 27 goals scored during the entire season. After three weeks of hard work and apple eating Hebron opened its soccer history by defeating Kents Hill, 5 to 0, on the rival's Held. The Team dominated this game from start to finish, pouring 4 goals through in the first period. On its own Greenwood Mountain Held, the Big Green showed its power and skill by turning back Fryeburg Academy, Gorham State Teachers College, and Fal- mouth High School. ln these three games the Hebron booters scored a high total of 15 goals. In the next game at Fryeburg the Team repeated its earlier victory by the same score of 3 to 0. Wfhile playing perhaps the best game of the year, the Big Green fell to a rugged Colby College Soccer Club, 2 to l, at Wfaterville. The Colby squad took an early lead but the Big Green fought back and after many close calls at the Colby goal Captain Nottebohm scored the only goal for Hebron. Colby's margin of victory was a successful penalty kick. In the last game the Big Gree11 closed the season as it had opened it, by defeating Kents Hill again. Hebron's first Soccer team was composed of a group of enthusiastic boys who loved the sport and worked together closely. The Spanish line with the aid of Eduardo Barry always kept up a strong attack, while the versatile Chris Macpherson anchored the defense at center half and kept the pressure on up front. Flanking him were -lack Dewar and Bruce Ellis, new to soccer, but quick to pick up the game. Kent Graham and Klint Harberson were two excellent fullbacks and Bob McCoy did a fine job as general utility man and in relief for the injured Harberson later in the season. Dean Benson pCl'f0'l'IllCCl an excellent job as goal tender, with only 3 goals getting by him during the season. XVith six lettermen returning next year another fine season is awaited. Next year's team will be led by half- back Bruce Ellis, who was elected Captain for l957 at the end of the season. Soccer's introductory year at Hebron brought a large turnout, enthusiastic effort, a fine record, and a group of boys who were indeed proud to have been on Hebron's first Soccer team. Under the fine coaching of Mr. Mac-- Millan, who was handling his last hockey squad at Hebron, the Team ran up an impressive string of thirteen straight victories. Of the many highlights of the campaign the 9 to 0 victory over arch rival St. Dominic's of Lewiston remains outstanding, In handing the Maine State Champions the worst defeat dealt them by Hebron in many years, the Big Green made it win 56 out of the last G7 games. The Team played in a pre-season tourney at XVest Point during Christmas vacation and sharp- ened its eye considerably while winning two games and playing another that never oflicially ended be- cause of a fracas on the ice which got out of hand. As the season progressed Mr. Mac's boys showed tremendous power and drive in notching many impressive victories. Exeter suffered the worst de- feat of its season at the hands of the Green, 7 to 2, as did Rhode Island State Champions Burrillville, ll to I. The Red Raiders of Melrose, Massachu- setts, Greater Boston League Champions, offered Hebron its toughest encounter, but they were downed, 1 to 0. Alumni week end saw the Team steal a 6 to 5 win away from a talent laden aggregation of grads in the last few minutes of play. This game fea- tured Frank Waterman scoring goal number 500 of the MacMillan Regime. A 6 to 3 last period win over formidable Bridgton Academy not only be- stowed upon Hebron the Maine State Preparatory School Hockey Title but also kept the home ice column clean for the fourth consecutive year. The Bowdoin and Colby Freshmen and a scrappy Lewiston High sextet, among others, fell hard be- fore the Big Green forces. A look at the season's statistics offers the clearest indication of the Team's prowess. A 99 goal out- put established a Hebron record, breaking by 2 goals the mark set by the 1954-55 squad. A mere 35 goals were tallied against clever goalie Pete Hep- burn, who, having never donned pads before this year, came through with three shutouts. The superlative first line accounted for 72 of the 99 goals. Wing Frank Waterman nailed down a new individual scoring record with his 43 points while Captain -lack Dewar and partner Richie Johnson tied the previous individual high with 40 points each. -Iuniors Bob McCoy and Bruce Ellis, with senior Dave Babson rotating, held the defense together all year. The second wave of forwards found Dean Benson holding down the right wing post and Bob Webb, jeff Manning, joe Ely, Jerry Borofsky and Paul Hyatt all participating interchangeably as the occasion would arise. Hardly anyone, including the coach, knew from day to day just who would support the Team as the second line. Coach MacMillan ended his coaching career at Hebron by producing one of the finest teams in the School's history. Not only did they have an envi- able record, but they also possessed the desire to work and will to win which made them a cham- pionship team. Co-Captains elect McCoy and Ellis, goalie Hep- burn and lineman Ely remain as bulwarks for next year and reminders of the greatness of the Hebron Hockey team of l957. In fact, cross country was the backbone event all season with many members of the Team showing special improvement and achievement. Co- Captains Macpherson and Durgin were excellent four event skiers with Macpherson coming through with a second in jumping, a fifth in slalom, and a sixth in downhill against top notch competition at the New Englands. Sophomore Dave Horn showed fine future promise with some excellent performances in all four events. juniors Bill Kimball and Phil Lewitt excelled in cross country and jumping respec- tively, while sophomores john Redmond and Sky Thurber specialized in cross country. There were highlights in the season, however, that the record does not make evident, the greatest ol them being the victory over M.C.I. This was only the second victory in baseball over this traditional rival in the last eleven years. It is gratifying that the Team unleashed its full potential power against such a rival. Mr. X'Villard's four man pitching stall was led by veterans Bob Bannard and Bill Getinan. Pele Hope, a junior, turned in several outstand- ing pitching ellorts and the stall as a group had a very respectable earned run average. But the best pitching was done when the Hebron bats were silent. Outstanding pcrlornlers all season were the versatile jack Dewar, solid catcher Pete Hepburn and the batting leader, center fielder Chris Macpherson. Despite the poor record many fine perform- ances will he remembered. There was the close win over Bridgton, always a good team to beat, the ten run Hrst inning and the triple play in the M.C.I. game, the Hne pitching ol' Pete Hope who allowed just three runs in eighteen innings in two games, and the slugging match ol' the Commencement game topped off hy Dick Lead- better's bases loaded homer to tl1e broad jump pit.
