HE BACCALAUREATE SERVICE on Sunday, May 26, formally opened Commencement Week. The Reverend Doctor Percy L. Vernon spoke on the topic Thought, Character, and Destiny. Commencement followed the two day pattern established last year. On Friday afternoon, June l, festivities were begun with the playing of the annual baseball game, this year against Deering High School of Portland. just as Hebron was catching up to the sizable lead built up by Deer- ing in the early innings a violent rain and thunder storm washed out any further baseball and left Deering the winner. Afterward, the annual tea and reception was held at the Headmaster's House. At the Commencement Banquet the main address was delivered by Professor Robert C. Albion, Professor of Naval History at Harvard University, on Our New World Responsibi1i-- ties. Musical entertainment was provided by the Band and the Glee Club. Mr. Daniel Chase of the Class of 1904 and Executive Director of the Sportsmanship Brotherhood presented a cita- tion from this organization to Mr. Dwyer for his outstanding qualities of sportsmanship. David Hambleton, President of the Senior Class, presented Mr. Allen with a check to be used for the purchase of new microscopes for the Biology Laboratory, new hymn books for the Hebron Community Church, and books for the school libraries, the gifts of the Class of 1956. Mr. Allen introduced the six members of the faculty who have completed a decade of service under his ten- ure beginning with Hebron's reopening ten years ago. As Messrs. Freiday, Jennings, Twitchell, Brennan, Willard and Williams came to the platform Mr. Allen told briefly of their contribu- tions to the School. The evening was climaxed by the announcement of the traditional awards as listed below. The next morning at the Commencement Exercises, again held in the Sargent Gymnasium be- cause of inclement weather, sixty-six members of the Class of 1956 received diplomas. The Reverend Doctor G. Ernest Lynch delivered the Commencement Address. Diplomas were pre- sented to the seniors by Mr. Roscoe H. Hupper, President of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Hup- per presented a loving cup in the name of the trustees to Mr. and Mrs. Allen in recognition of their decade of service to the School. After these ceremonies at a special meeting of the Class of 1956 held in the study hall in Sturtevant Hall, three honorary members were inducted into the Class. Honored in this ceremony were the Reverend Father John E. Conoley, retiring after twenty-seven years in the Hebron Community, the Reverend Doctor G. Ernest Lynch, deliverer of the Commencement Address for ten consecutive years, and the Reverend Doctor Percy L. Vernon, Baccalaureate minister for ten consecutive years. The traditional Alumni Luncheon and parents' and seniors' picnic buffet concluded the Commencement activities.
