The Reverend Doctor Percy L. Vernon spoke on the topic Thought, Character, and Destiny. Commencement followed the two day pattern established last year. On Friday afternoon, June l, festivities were begun with the playing of the annual baseball game, this year against Deering High School of Portland. just as Hebron was catching up to the sizable lead built up by Deer- ing in the early innings a violent rain and thunder storm washed out any further baseball and left Deering the winner. Afterward, the annual tea and reception was held at the Headmaster's House. At the Commencement Banquet the main address was delivered by Professor Robert C. Albion, Professor of Naval History at Harvard University, on Our New World Responsibi1i-- ties. Musical entertainment was provided by the Band and the Glee Club. Mr. Daniel Chase of the Class of 1904 and Executive Director of the Sportsmanship Brotherhood presented a cita- tion from this organization to Mr. Dwyer for his outstanding qualities of sportsmanship. David Hambleton, President of the Senior Class, presented Mr. Allen with a check to be used for the purchase of new microscopes for the Biology Laboratory, new hymn books for the Hebron Community Church, and books for the school libraries, the gifts of the Class of 1956. Mr. Allen introduced the six members of the faculty who have completed a decade of service under his ten- ure beginning with Hebron's reopening ten years ago. As Messrs. Freiday, Jennings, Twitchell, Brennan, Willard and Williams came to the platform Mr. Allen told briefly of their contribu- tions to the School. The evening was climaxed by the announcement of the traditional awards as listed below. The next morning at the Commencement Exercises, again held in the Sargent Gymnasium be- cause of inclement weather, sixty-six members of the Class of 1956 received diplomas. The Reverend Doctor G. Ernest Lynch delivered the Commencement Address. Diplomas were pre- sented to the seniors by Mr. Roscoe H. Hupper, President of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Hup- per presented a loving cup in the name of the trustees to Mr. and Mrs. Allen in recognition of their decade of service to the School. After these ceremonies at a special meeting of the Class of 1956 held in the study hall in Sturtevant Hall, three honorary members were inducted into the Class. Honored in this ceremony were the Reverend Father John E. Conoley, retiring after twenty-seven years in the Hebron Community, the Reverend Doctor G. Several spirited football rallies were sparked by the Band's participation. In the spring term ellertive appearances were made at the Memorial Day cere- monies and at the Connnencement Banquet, as well as before several special events in the Sargent Gymnasium. .X signilicant development this year was the increase in the repetoire ol' the Club. Hopes lor a larger and even more active Band next year are high as a relatively large group ol' Band members will be finishing out lour successive seasons under Mr. Starkpolcfs capable direction. Discussion Group The Discussion Group is an informal organization in which boys talk ovcr subjects which interest them, with the assistance and guidance ol Mr. Williams. The members conscientiously attended the weekly meetings and discussed such topics as religion, segregation, and principles ol' morality. Although in most cases no absolute decisions were arrived at every person participating was given a chance to state his views and in many cases to dclcnd those views. Actually no clearly defined conclusions were expected, but the very ability of each member to state his opinions and the discussions that ensued helped them to strengthen or correct previous convictions. In this way the Discussion Group helped all who attended its meetings by aiding in the development ol' cach members mind. nmu' H1lI'lll'l'. Nhilroiuh. Under the direetion ol' Chairman Philip Brown. Viee-Clhairman .Klan St-hiro, and Seeretary -loseph Bujold the Key's duties began on opening day with the greeting ol' new boys and their families. Following the tradition ol' the last lew years the Key earried out a xery sueeesslul Green Key lforum. This meeting, on September 23, served to acquaint all students with the extraeurrieular and athletic' aetiyities within the School. ,Ks the lall term progressed the Key organized and staged several lootball rallies. It printed and distributed squad lists at home lootball games. The Organization gathered the material lor the N55-56 Hebron .Xeademy Directory. The Green Key's main lunetion throughout the year was in meeting and providing relreshments lor all visiting teams. Members also assumed the respon- sibility for the eare ol' the Common and lfranklin Rooms in Sturteyant House. To eonelude another year ol' service to the School the Key sponsored the annual old clothes drive to benefit the needy ol' the Hebron community. lnxl rrmu' xonRoseminge, C., Connell. Mann, Smith. K.. Although not a club in the strictest sense of the word, for it had no extended membership list, the Jazz Record Club served the School during the year as do many other more formally organized clubs at Hebron. The Club began because a few students desired to form an organization which would make good jazz records available to the School. The introduction of phonographs in dormitory rooms this year made easy what would have been an otherwise impossible task for this group. The School generously consented to turn over to the Club part of the proceeds of the record fairs held by De Orsey's of Lewiston at Hebron this year, and with this money the boys made their initial purchases and opened up their library. Each Wednesday afternoon after lunch the jazz Record Library was opened for business. Records were loaned for a week at a time to any student or faculty member who wished to hear them. At the end of the year through further discount purchases and one exceptional gift from Mr. john VV. Grilhn, Executive Secretary of the Record Association of America, the Club possessed approximately sixty records. Moreover, it had carried out extensive loaning operations, thus contributing to the appreciation for and enjoyment of jazz music throughout the School. rurv: Pricsl. l.angIc'x'. llllrgin, Cicsvinallll. A unique new activity was a stamp auction held in the lall term. lllith Mr. MacMillan as auctioneer the Cllub put up lor sale duplicate plate blocks, first day covers, and ap- provals, the proceeds to be used to buy athletic stamps lor the permanent School collection. During the winter term the greatest project was revising the entire laculty picture section, while the advertising solicitation campaign and the organization and writing ol' sports and club articles went on at their regular pace. In the spring term the decision was made to expand the Vespers section to make it serve as a more integral part ol the book as it serves as one ol' the important events ol' the school week. During this term group photographs ol' the organizations and of the spring athletic teams were taken and a great deal ol' the final make-up ol' the book was decided upon and executed. Many people outside the YIQXRBOOK stall' itsell' helped in the construction ol' this book. In particular this year the editors are indebted to lXlr. Keller lor his help in discovering and making available an outstanding lile ol' student produced photographs. The editors ol' this book hope that there is something within it that will keep Hebron alive in the memories ol' the Class ol' 1956, and will tell all readers about llebron lile in this year. Undertaking a large rebuilding job Mr. Switzer, the new head coach, found not one returning letterman from last year's veteran outfit. This inexperience called for much shifting of players and reliance on virtually untried performers, and was a fac- tor in the early season losses. After two weeks of practice the team traveled to Bridgton for the traditional opening game. After giving up two early touchdowns Hebron settled down and do- minated most of the play but could only produce one score. In the first home game of the season a steady downpour and a determined Kim- ball Union defense held the team to a 6 to 6 draw. The rain held down Hebron's passing attack, its most potent offensive weapon all season, and the visitors' line backers made some very timely tackles. He- bron's sputtering attack threatened con- stantly but could only produce one touch- down and one that was called back, while the undefeated visitors made their one serious drive pay off with a score. The following week a fast Bowdoin Freshman team piled up much yardage on the ground but was confined to two touch- downs by a Hebron defense that noticeably stiffened near its own goal line. The trip to M. C. I. was a disappoint- ment as the team could not seem to get going and was soon worn down by superior man power. Against a formidable and undefeated Colby Freshman squad Hebron played one of its best games of the season in a losing cause. In scoring two touchdowns the Big Green became the only team to score on the Colby Yearl ngs all season. Back on Andrews Field the team con- tinued the improvement shown against Col- by, breakng into the victory column against Higgins, 20 to 6. Hebron gained control of this game early and in the last quarter Mr. Switzer was able to let the substitutes carry the load for a considerable time. In the final game at New Hampton the fired up home team eked out a one-point win over a disappointed Hebron squad. In a year of rebuilding and experiment- ing much credit should go to those mem- bers ol the team who played in positions not normally their own. Co-Captain lVin Shaw switched from end to tailback before the First game and carried Hebron's at- tack with his passing. In the middle of the season end Terry Sparrow switched to fullback and added drive to the team's attack. Veteran wingback Phil Brown shilted to end at mid season and formed an excellent pass catching combination with right end Al Schiro. Ken Mortimer, with little previous experience and little size, became a hard hitting blocking back. Huge Co-Captain Len Bush led a rel- atively youthful line which was stubborn and willing. Of the sixteen playing letter winners six will return next year, five of them forming a block of experience from tackle to tackle. X'Vith this group to start with it is hoped that next year the record of the team will more accurately reflect some ol' this year's hard work and training. e 5 Q 2 Ifirxl rote: Hales, Hotlmann, Murphy, Cutter, Valentine, Nlcllwain, Nlclfarland, Stein, Mentllck, Fowler. In a triangular meet with Bowdoin Freshmen and Frye- burg, Hebron came out second, losing to Fryeburg but defeating Bowdoin Freshmen. ln the first of the Kents Hill matches Cap- tain Squint Moran led his harriers to a 20 to 36 victory. In defeating Mfest Paris the team reversed an early season loss to that team, while the win over Stephens High School -I. Another outstanding game occurred at mid season when the team came within two points ol' defeating the St. Dom's Varsity. 'l'hree seniors, Co-Captains Dan Cunningham and 1-'red Quint, and forward Norman Stein led the team in scoring, but the re- mainder ol the squad consisted olf promising underclassmen. The final win ol' the year against Burrillville marked Hehron's l7th straight home hockey victory and win num' her 43 out ol' the last 54 games. But the real highlight ol' this season was the victory over St. Dom's, the first in tell years ol' trying. After comparatively easy wins over Tilton and Hope High School the first crucial game of the season was played at Stanley Arena against Bridgton Academy. In this game the team scored a spectacular victory in coming lrom hehind in the third period to win, Fl lo 2. 'l'his same type ol' spirit was shown on the following Saturday as the Big Green upset a star studded ,Xlumni team, 9 to li. Alter squeaking by New Hampton in overtime the team lell into a lmriel' slump. Andover notched its first hockey victory over Hebron in three years and the team lost a one goal heart- breaker to Colby Freshmen and tied Lewiston High School. Returning to home ice after four games on the road the team broke out with a rash of scoring in turning back Winchester High School, New Prep, and Bowdoin Freshmen. In these three games Hebron scored 25 goals. This return to top form set the stage for the big game with St. Dom's, a team that was later in the season a finalist in the New England High School Hockey Tournament. Russ Williamson, substituting for the injured Eric Swenson in the goal, turned in an outstanding performance as the team drove to the victory that so many Hebron teams before it had vainly sought. In the next game the Big Green continued its excellent play in downing a tricky Burrill- ville team. This game produced some of the finest hockey of the season. As a fitting climax the season concluded with an overnight trip to Hanover, New Hampshire, for a game with the Dartmouth Freshmen. This was one of the most efficient groups ever assembled by Mr. MacMillan. It was not a team of individual stars, but rather one that had boys who were willing to give their whole hearted co- operation and spirit as well as talents in every game. Captain Dave Kelley, an outstanding player and a quiet and effective leader, led the veteran line of Sam Dibbins and Tom Thomson from his wing position. Mike Graney, Bill Mc- Neil and Tom Murphy comprised the second line. Both of these lines were very evenly matched. Three excellent defensemen, Tom Fos- ter, Tracy Perry, and Don Hall, rotated in the two defense positions. Eric Swenson started the season as regular goalie and played well, but an injury suffered in practice after the New Prep game forced him to the sidelines for the re- mainder of the season. Russ Wlilliamson, who had some previous goaltending experience, took over the position and did an outstanding job. None of the lettermen were underclassmen and next year Mr. MacMillan must look for strength in the group of -I.V. players of this year. But always there will be the record of this de- voted team to spur on next year's Varsity. Fifrst row: Merrill, King, Smith, G., Bowman, Smith. K. In its first defeat of the season the team was overtaken by a well coached Kents Hill team which took advantage of the control difficulties of Hebron's pitchers. Though losing, 3 to 0, the team played a sterling defensive game against Colby Freshmen and threatened throughout. The Big Green lost to a good hitting Tilton squad and was be- ginning to solve Fred Harlow's Deering High club when a thunderstorm halted the game in the seventh inning. Captain Tom Thomson and center- fielder Dave Kelley were steady perform- ers on a well balanced team.
