These gay creatures, smartly dressed in bright blue coats, are known at H. C. Sz A. as the College Sophomores. The male portion of the class, likewise contrary to the habits of their feathered namesakes, did the bulk of the work, while the ladies showed their admiration in outbursts of song in their honor. On the basketball Hoon the boys showed their fighting instinct by repel- ling all invaders and winning the championship for H. C.-the girls cheering them on. But the outstanding achievement for which the Bluebirds will long be remembered as dispensers of happiness, is the sponsoring of the HE-CO-AC. Since the first step to success is a definite aim the Bluebirds were fortunate in having an Ehrn who as Editor-in- Chief, made it possible to attain the goal. Barney, though he had no Spark Plug, furnished the humor by means of a camera. Fitzie, the Advertising Manager, was so successful that Shorty was never short in his accounts as Business Manager. Dale, as Associate Editor, and Babe as Activities Editor, did only what can be ex- pected of the fair sex. But as able assistants the other Bluebirds, Prissie the Sheba, Tillie the talker, Feta the 'And So Forthj and Sinkum, the handy man, did their part as loyal Bluebirds Would. Two other able workers were Adalene and Dorothy, who may be called the wrens of the Sophomore Class. ! i- .M W' S : , T T if ' XQTFQ-'M' wi J' , -HWJTYECEW ' 1 Page Ten , Y' ,rr z -L sf jar: -. --. -gi-,-u --,I ,... , Y-. .l L ., Tex- fe- , , fill - rl, .Lis-.. ffrz- 551 'lbw -:V-TF f M1-2,--,- 4 'PT-Q L 1- 5- L -'L f'fj..i2,.,g-L::-3 1. bi ,L.,.i,2.,.-S17.1.-4:E,4-v3EFf+-e-3? ?f1:' '. WE, THE COLLEGE FROSI-I Usually the freshmen in high schools or academies are attributed the questionable honor of being greener than the greenest. Does it follow that we, as college frosh, would then be greener than the greenest or merely greener than the green '? This reasoning, logical or otherwise, is made with the hopeful assumption that the color in mind is of a somewhat less vivid shade than in former days. For the large majority this is the thirteenth dose of educational medicine guaranteed to exercise the brain. A chosen few have had larger portions, possibly because they liked them so well, but most certainly because they wished to wait for and accompany a more select group in climbing up the educational ladder. These yearly brain treatments must have been effective for now- We're the lincst and the brightest that there arc, The loveliest and rightest near or farg We are all brave and witty, good-looking if not pretty- We're the brightest in the city, each a star. ITEM: We bequeath to the faculty restful nights and peaceful dreams. We promise them a rest from the twenty-niners' petitions. No more will we be in a position to supplicate, and no more will they be pained to refuse. ITEM: We give and bequeath to the school as a whole, the jov- ial and unreluctant nature of the twenty-niners. May our Alma Mater benefit by this and may she cherish our memory forever. ITEM: To the Juniors, class of thirty, we give and bequeath the honorable seats in chapel which have heretofore been occupied by the twenty-niners. Let every member show his gratitude for the gift by being promptly in his spt each morning. ITEM: To our successors we also give and bequeath the Senior dignity. We are afraid that this will be a strain upon the nerves and muscles of the gay and frolicksorne Juniors, but we all hope they will rise to the occasion as they sometimes can. ITEM: To all, we leave, not of necessity but of our own free will, our blessing and a pledge of friendship from henceforth. Although he is not a high scorer he is u wonderful feeder, He will be the only veteran back for next year. Alvin Aim Ehm, our stellar center, has played his last year for the black end gold. He is well known for his shots from the free throw line, for which reason he was the leading scorer in the con- ference. We all regret that he is lost through graduation. Robert Barney Gross, our diminutive forward, has many a point to his credit. His' lloorworli and shooting would he an as- set to any team. The picture you see above may be a proof to the answer, but you must see the active pic- ture of the girls to be convinced. The first part of the gym period finds the girls scrambling for the volley ball, turning Dutch somcrsaults or exercising what in girls, hardly needs more exercise than in ordinarily gets-the tongue. Then the instructor blows the whistle and instantly everything is quiet as Icabod Crane's school room. After roll call, the girls try their luck at throwing bean bags onto the steel beams of the ceiling or waving wands around like the fencers of old. Sometimes class teams are seen in volley. ball combat and often they make their bids for the title of the Babe Ruth of inner baseball. Yes, there are many competitive games like broad jump, high jump and cat and mouse. Other things are accomplished besides learning how to stumble grace- fully. Among such things are marching and playing games to music, Indian wrestling matches, and jumping over horses, imagine! When the weather is balmy, hikes are in vogue and the girls are shown how to breathe intelligently and how to jump across a creek without squeeling. Yes, indeed, the girls have quite a variety, and that you know, is the spice of life. Can that be the reason why some of them are a bit peppery at times? .g.. 'Gifs .af f- Q is T A- -A I. . For this reason two fine new courts were added last year. Hebron Col- lege opened its tennis career with a match with Concordia Teachers College. Theodore Meske fleftj vanquished his opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Alvin Ehm lrightj was the victor of a 6-2, 6-4 score. The score for the doubles was 6-2, 6-2, also in favor of the locals. In no case was it necessary to play a third set in order to determine the Winner. This year a larger number of candidates have reported. A tentative schedule has been arranged, including a Junior College Conference Tournment. GOLF Golf is one of the spring activities at H. C. It was first intro- duced last year, and although the team only played one scheduled match, it was fortunate in Winning it. A number of candidates are out at present and a team will be picked later. It has become very interesting due to the fact that a number of tentative matches have been scheduled. There is also a possibility of a Junior College Con- ference Tournament. gt:-Y jg.. .4 am, L'-'f ' W. -L,.-:- ,V-ai W mf - -Lag:-. - -- rvirw- fi. He has ever had the best interests of H. C. Sz A. at heart, and is particularly responsible for the growth and success of the Music Department. YN Page Twenty-eight A 'P 'jg 13 I VESTED CHOIR 5 Q I l n ' l Music Department of Hebron College and Academy Eighteen years ago, Prof. Paysen gave his first piano lesson in a small room in Buehring Hall. In those days there Wasrft much of a demand for a teacher of piano and voice. Prof. Peysen recalls I that Mrs. Frank Huntsman and Mrs. Loren Darby were among those . . who made the trip from town before the days of sidewalks and auto- . mobiles. For a year or more, Prof. Paysen went from house to house giving lessons. Later a private studio was established downtown. One piano constituted the musical equipment, aided by an excellent teacher. From these meager beginnings the Music Department has de- veloped to its present high standard. It is now self-supporting. Its personnel consists of two full time teachers. Its equipment can be favorably compared with full-fledged conservatories. At the present time musical equipment consists of a fine 556000 Wicks electric pipe organ, an Estey reed organ, seven upright pianos, two grand pianos, band and orchestra instruments, and an extensive musical librziry. In all, an investment of some 516,000 to VF? Donations, gifts, and receipts from entertainments, plays, and operettas have aided considerably in securing the best equip- ment. The school has sponsored many fitting radio programs during the last five years. During the past four years the school Glee Clubs and soloists have won Sweepstakes Cups in the State Music Con- tests. Three contraltos secured first place for three consecutive years. Last year a vested choir was organized which rendered ex- cellent service throughout the year. A band and orchestra complete the musical equipment. ln addition to his work at Hebron College and Academy, Prof. Paysen has charge of Public School Music at Deshler. His present assistants in the Music Department are Miss Cecelia Vogelsang, Piano 5 Miss Ruth Paysen, Piano and Violin. fesE -sg-r:gf-l?5g,sLg---5341121' is fi Eg 5-,lf T Page Thirty n QRGANHZATHQNS if 1? l il l 'E' by ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, -M.. ,,...,... - , W- A. , . , - 'll n '. ' 1 i THE PEP CLUB The Pep Club of Hebron College and Academy was organized - in November, 1928. Although the club is new, it has offered wonder- ai ful opportunities for the students to exhibit loyalty and school spirit. It also encouraged good sportsmanship. The goal of this club was Well attained. They elected a pep leader flildna Keilwitzl and an assistant CErnest Moodyj, who led l them in giving the teams the necessary pep. Win or lose, the group cheered the Black and Gold contestants to the final whistle of every i game. Because of the exceptionally large number of victories over high calibered teams, the Hebron College and Academy athletes i shared the victories with their closest ally, the Pep Club. f l ' J N, l l x if il V U l l I l I d i ' i l x ' l l I l .I ii, ll V l EDNA KEILWITZ, Cheer-Leader 'ii 'arf V A 4' Page Thirtyetwo ,. .Q , as ,-, .j-.,A.s- -Jfc'13' , :rg 'G 137'-.
