E wma muergmmmuunr E the othel students who wele yyalloyylng deeply IH the mlre Thls of course yyas when the Professor yyas not looklng After leaylng college he taught for a short tlme but h1S lnyentlye gen1us cropped out and he stalted a factory for the manufacture of school drawing sets He w as bulldlng up qulte a business yvhen the factory took fire and he and h1S yylfe barely escaped yvlth their llves Every thlng was a total loss and a f11end asklng h1m the next mornlng when vlewlng thc rulns what he would no next he made the characterlstlc reply What I shall try to do next yv1ll be to pay mv debts He w as then employed as a superlntendent at the Damon Safe Works but h1s brother haymg bu1lt up a large buslness 1n the manufacture of dry plates at Leyvlston Malne wanted h1m to come and engage wxth h1m and he d1d so Here the lnventlve gen1us agaln showed ltself and they soon had machlnes for dolng work Wh1ch had before laborlously been accompl1shed by hand At a meetmg of the manufacturers of photo graphlc supplles there was an attempt to raise the prlce of dry plates anal the Stanleys opposed 1t As an outcome they were boycotted by the trade and the next month where they had been dolng buslness worth S35 000 00 a month they dld not do over S500 00 Undaunted they kept thexr help busy 1ssu1ng clrculars to every photographer ln the country offerlng the trade As a result the other end of the see saw Went up Their buslness amounted to 375 000 00 for the next month and their competltors were asklng where they were at Then to get rld of the Stanleys a syndlcate was formed and bought them out and they left the dry plate buslness foreyer They had a meetlng to declde hoyv the money derived from the sale of then buslness should be used They d1d not care to spend the money for personal emovment but they wanted somethlng to do so they turned then attentlon to the manufacture of automob1les Xvlth the help of a machlnlst 1n a short t1me they had the first Stanley Steamer that was ever bu1lt Wh1ch IS now 1n the store room of the Stanley factory at Newton Massachusetts Then othen makers wanted to buy them out and they sold the buslness Thelr competltors bought them out to get r1d of them but the pulchasers made no restrlctxons and the Stanleys soon had anothel car under constructlon 1n whxch they had made many lmprovements They contlnued 1n th1s buslness for a serles of years but lntense apphca t1on had begun to tell and F O ayyoke to the reallzatlon that hls health yyas 1mpa1red and he was reduced to almost a skeleton A consultatlon of phys1c1ans yyas held and the yerldct yvas that he IXX XX XX 15 ,,A ES 7 - . - .. ..
