Smiles MISS BRISCOE — Is a chicken big enough to eat when it's two weeks old? DAVID JOHNSON — Certainly not. MISS BRISCOE — Then how does it live? ALBERT DENTON — How fas' can you all run? BOY CRAFTON — Ah can run two miles a minute 'ceptin' foh one thing. ALBERT — What's dat, boy? BOY — On'y jes' cause de distance is too long foh de shortness of de time. MISS KIULA — Johnny, what are the seasons of the year? JOHNNY ALLGOOD — You mean in the United States? MISS KIULA — Yes, of course. JOHNNY — Basketball and football. MRS. FARLEY — Why, surely, you don't consider those windows washed. JENNY BOSWELL — Yes, I washed 'em nice and clean on the inside, so you can look out, but left 'em dirty on the outside so people goin' by can't look in. MR. BRADY — Johnny, what s a rivulet? JOHNNY ALLGOOD — A small river. MR. BRADY — Now, Robert, you tell me what a hamlet is. ROBERT BENNETT — (just beginning to doze off) — Why - er - a small ham. MISS NEWMAN — Can you type? ADELL REEDER — I use the Columbus system. MISS NEWMAN — What's that? ADELL — I discover a key, then I land on it. Calvin Gibson went to the dentist to have an aching tooth removed. After the extraction was over, he asked the dentist to let him have the tooth. DENTIST — What do you want it for? CALVIN — I'm going to take it home, fill it with sugar, and then just watch it ache. MARTHA TAPP — Well, what's on the menu today? MRS. BOATMAN — Why, we have thousands of things to eat. MARTHA — What are they? MRS. BOATMAN — Beans. I saw a cow slip through the fence. A horse fly in the store. I saw a beard walk up the street, A stone step by the dcor. I saw a mill race up the read, A mornng break the gloom. I saw the night fall on the lawn, A clock run in the room. I saw a peanut stand up high, A sardine box in town. I saw a bed spring at the gate, An inkstand on the ground. — 27 —
