T E LITTLE RBD SCHOOL HOUS Heavener's 1948 school system, which boasts a total of seven buildings and 34 faculty members,isa far cry from its 'first little red school house , erected sometime in 1890 According to long time residents,t1is one room frame struc ture was located in the west part of town near the old Joe Heavener residence The students who ranged inage from five to twentv five years, were instructed by oneteacher whose martyred' name is not preserved in the archives of the City of Heavener However, the school had an enrollment of some 25 students, who carried their drinking water fromana tesian well locat ed near Dr Fair's place During the fall, the larger boys cut firewood and carried lt to the schoolwhere itwas burned in a single cast iron stove and the was the H8 In 1898 two of Heavener's activecitizens,O J 1 Brewer better school building This building was located where Commercial Hotel now stands Since Heavener'spopulation rapidly increasing the new school was two stories high, second floor being used bythe Masoniclodge This build was occupied until 1905 when the city floated bonds to H H 1 1 EH u U ' ' - .. In and John Fulsome went on a note for 3500 tofinanceda bigger 1 U - n n .- N - . fa build a two story brick structure to grace the present West Side Campus As the enrollment lncrea ed a few years later a four room annex was added which was later stuccoed The faculty included eight teachers wits Denton R Woods as principal The following yearwork was started on the city's first highschoolbui1ding,a three story edifice plus basement This school was located where the highschool nowstands The students moved in' in the fall of 1911 and the f1rst class of five seniors was graduated in 1919 These graduates were Clarice Billingsley, Murl Cram, Elnora Hall, Evangelene Roberts, and Bouna nyder The highschool was also accredited that year School was held in this building until September,l9l8 when it burned on Friday night before school was scheduled to open the following Monday morning The fire, caused by an electrical storm, completely destroyed the building and all school records However, school was taught all that year, classes being held in churches and a downtown store building The present highschool was ready for occupancy inSept ember, 1919, and the home econom1csbui1ding,garage and gym nasium were added in the 1930's Construction started on the shop building in 1945, and work has just begun on a new music building, slated for completion in the late spring Next on the building agenda is a 'home' for the vocational agriculture department.
