'x tv? A Review of Extra-Curricula Activities Learn to do by doing. This has been the motto of our school for the past four years. In living up to our motto we have organized various extra- curricula activities. These activities are encouraged to provide means for small groups of pupils to follow some definite interest, or to develop in- terests for pupils whose horizon is restricted. The firs: year, under the leadership of Mr. Crisp, we organized a Boy Scout Troop, the first since 1921. The Boy Scouts are continuing on and have Won many honors at the field events given for the Scouts of the Paducah District. The first Taxidermy Club ever known to Heath was organized, and at the present we have one of the finest high school museums in Kentucky. Students learn the art of preparing, stuffing and mounting the skins of animals so as to preserve their lifelike appearance. Our Photography Club advanced to such a de- gree of efficiency that many of the pictures for this annual were made and developed by our high school photography department. A new system of behavior was introduced to the students of Heath. No longer is there a teacher in the library to check hooks out to the students. No longer is there a teacher in the study hall to deal out punishment to offenders. All of this is done by the students and it has truly proven suc- cessful. Teachers can go on with their work while students keep an orderly place to study. A Future Farmer Club has been organized by Mr. Basil Smith and has been very successful. In the speaking events held for Future Farmers, Heath Won first in the District and entered the State Contest. This year the Future Farmers held their second annual Father and Son banquet. A Dramatic Club is sponsored by Mrs. Koch. Each year the dramatic club gives a play and a recital. This club has been outstanding in bringing out dramatic ability in the students of Heath. A Pep Squad was organized and sponsored by Mrs. Lassiter and it has been extremely success- ful. It is one of the most colorful and artis.ic exhibits of the school and its appearance and support cannot help but give added life and zest to any team. Our Music Department causes us to swell with pride and glow with sa isfaction. Heath won five first places, out of six entries at the District Con- test at Murray. On April 30 the Music Depart- ment journeyed to Lexington to display its wares in state competition. , Now we take pleasure in presenting the largest and best example of complete cooperation that any school can offer-The Parent Teachers' As- sociation. Our P. T. A. has been highly cooperative in helping the school with all of its activities. At this time, we, the students of Heath Corn- munity High School, give three cheers for the Parent Teachers' Association. Public Discussion, a much needed art, is very diligently sponsored by a former teacher and a friend to all, Mrs. Onie Hill. Heath's record this year is very gratifying. One of our entrants won first place in the District Contest held at Murray and entered in the State contest at Lexington. The Tumbling Teams, sponsored by Mr. Car- roll and Miss Knott, really deserve a lot of praise. They showed the school some very remarkable acts. Don't be surprised to hear of some of them being noted trapeze artists in the future. The Band, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Kelly, has proved highly efficient in entertaining, and does its part in forming an all-round school. Re- cently flashy uniforms of orange and black were purchased and the band is Ready and Willing to perform. If you miss seeing the Art Club room you have missed one of the beauty spots of the entire school. Miss Johnston, with the cooperation of the mem- bers of the club, really produce some attractive paintings. A number of the students gained considerable recognition through their art. But with all this we have not forgotten or even neglected Basketball. The Pirates, piloted by our new Coach, Mr. James Brookshire, deserve our ut- most congratulations. Being the dark horse of the District Tournament at Barlow, they really turned into the Man 0' War and out-distanced all their rivals by a devastating score. They were defeated in the semi-finals at Murray by the Re- gional Winners. We salute you, boys! Honorificabitindinitatibus-come on Spelling Specialists, spell this one. Due to the need for gcod spellers a spelling club is sponsored by Miss jackson. At present about 80 belong to this club. We were unable to get a picture of these, because of the large number enrolled. We remove our hats to the Debate Club. In the four years of its existence the debaing team has been runner-up at the District Tournament once, winner of the District Tournament twice, an entrant in the State Tournament three times, a runner-up at the State Tournament once and an entrant in the National Tournament once. The debaters have worked diligently. Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for courtesy. Our Courtesy Club, under the efficient guidance of Miss Metta Mathis, stresses etiquette, politeness, kindness and respect. The Hi-Y Club, organized by Mr. D. D. Crisp, is striving to better the record of an organization of 1919, which received a cup as winners in the State Y. M. C. A. Bible Reading Contest. The present organization, composed of students with culture and refinement, has raised the standards of the school by conducting devotional exercises in chapel and by rendering construc ive criticism. During the past two years a new sense of aesthetic has been shown in the dances rendered by the Clogging Class under the sponsorship of Miss Molete Morelock. Page thirty ezgb!
