Senior Clary 105100 F entered Heath High School as Freshmen in 1931, under the sponsorship of Mr. Holland Lecky. We had only fifty-two members, and were the smallest class in school, fbut far from the quietestlj We felt very important as we elected our first class officers, who were: Victor Smith, President, Wilbur -lacobs, Vice President, and Maggie Gray Kelly, Secretary. The Freshman outing was held at Metropolis Lake near the latter part of school. After gaining a year of experience in this valuable institution of learning, forty-twm of us came back to be dubbed' Silly Sophomoresu. We were very proud of the name' Sophomores until we were informed that it meant wise fooln. Miss Metta Mathis was our sponsor and we chose as class officers: Phil Magruder, President, Ezra Davis, Vice Presi-' dent, and Ida Bell Allen, Secretary. Only thirty-five answered the roll call in our Junior year. We were feeling quite at home by this time and under the sponsorship of Mrs. Margaret Kelly and Miss Rcwena Nlarshall, we began doing things . Our junior play, The llobgobfifl Howe was .1 great success. U Zack Hill filled the important office of president with Ezra Davis, Vice President, and Ida Bell Allen, re-elected Secretary. We entertained the Scniers with an outing at Holl0way's Landing, followed by a picture show. With a roster of thirty of the old faithfulsu, we began ,our last year at Heath. With the dignity prescribed to Seniors, we had a class meeting and chose Mr. B. K. Dowell tu sponsor our Senior activities. We took all privileges allowed us and gave many tntertiining programs and delightful outings. Willard Carneal was President, Iizra Davis, Vice President, Gelah Long, Secretary: Virginia Iglehart, Treasurer, Maydelle Rogers Harris and Lee L. Penn were Stupcft Council representatives. . The news is written by the -lournalism group and turned ox er to thc members of the typing class to be typed ready for the ditto machine. After the various pages have been printed they are clamped together in magazine style. Not a single contest has been lost due to this participation. V The Club is very happy to have had associations with the following schools in West Kentucky: Sharpe, Hickman, Benton, Hardin, Tilghman, Reidland, Lone Oak, and Murray Training School. ln this series the Heath Club suffered five defeats. A team composed of Roy Vance, Boyce McFlya and Zack Hill accompanied by their coach, Mrs. Furuth Swift closed the debating season with a trip to Morganfield, Kentucky, and Evansville, lndiana. On March 22-23, the District Tournament was held at Murray and the three boys came out with flying colors. After following probably the hardest route of any team in the tournament by defeating Bandana, Lone Oak and Benton, they lost to Reidland by a two to one decision, thus entitling them to a trip to Lexington April 4, 5, 6, to compete in the State Tournament for State Championship. Much of the success of the Debating Club was due to the untiring efforts of their sponsor, Mrs. Euruth R. Swift. He closed his career in the Calvert City game of -3 the Regional Tournament with a bang, scoring 4 points in 37 seconds. Con X' was a regular on the champion reserve team of ,34. CAPTAIN EZRA DAVIS- Horkim Captain Ezra Davis, star forward, high scorer for the season, letter man for three years, and all regional forward two years, ranks high in the history of Heath High basketball. Hoskins,' has a great career on he hardwood both behind and in front of him. LEE L. PENN- Rabbit Penn won his second letter the first semester but was ineligible the second because of the eight-semester ruling. The Pirates were undefeated while Penn was with them. He was the best defensive man on the squad, in ad- dition to controlling the tip-off and making his share of points. PHIL MAGRUDER- Dilly Phil, a senior, was not a member of the starting line-up, but was valuable reserve material and served efficiently at the center post or as guard when needed. ln '34 he made the reserve team. ANDREW -IENKINS- Bully Andrew jenkins, center, is a senior and made the team in '35, the only year he came out for basketball. Even though he lacked experience, he was il great defensive player and seldom failed to get the tip-off. EDWIN OVERSTREET- Ed Although short of stature, Overstreet was 160 pounds of fighting energy from start to finish. Ed played regular at the guard position the first year he came out for basketball. Overstreet is a sophomore and we expect tw.: more brilliant years from him. We know he won't disappoint us as he never has. JESSE CARNEAL, -IR.- JM jesse Carneal, -Ir., although not a member of the first five, always saw service before the game was over. He thrilled the fans with his uncanny jump-shots besides cutting his man on the defense. He has another year ahead of him, so watch him in '36. 'x WILLIAM ERNEST LONG-ffamiw Ernie , the dribbling and shooting sensation o'f the Pirate '35 team, is a senior and has many points to his credit. In '34 Ernie made the tourna- ment team and will be remembered in the history of the school for the ac- curacy of his long shots. HOWARD lVlASSlE- Mamie Massie, a senior, was a good substitute at the guard and center positions during the first half of the ,35 season. The Pirates missed Massie as reserve after his graduation at mid-term. In ,34 he made the reserve team that won the championship at Lone Oak. VICTOR SMITH- Vic Vic, a star guard, was very consistent and very capable of his calmness at all stages of the game. He is a senior very much on the varsity next year. He made the reserve team in ' 3 4. Egllai. - , ,. 'lr 5 H. I i THE FEATURES Clam' Trophy Ufzkmerf Mus. EURUTH R. SWIFT Three cheers should be given for Mrs. Swift and her hard-working juniors, who were the Winners of the class trophy. A beautiful cup was given as the prize to the class which worked the hardest throughout the school year of 1934-35. The loyal juniors gained the lead at the beginning of school and kept it throughout the contest. They proved quite help- ful in the sale of the Pirata. The contest Was judged by the point system. A certain number of points was given for each outstanding piece of work done by the classes. GJ? Wz'nner gf Pirata Safes Contest Boyce McElya, a member of the junior Class, was the winner of the Pirata Salesman- ship Contest. He was an outstanding student in many ways. Besides being a booster for his class and school in general, he was a member of the debating team, which participated in the state contest at Lexington. He was also a member of the reserve basketball team. Such students as Boyce are always a credit to any high school.
