1 ill? i ,... ...W , ., Scrap Drive The scrap drive in which all students of the Hearne High School engaged, in the fall of 1942, was a contest between the four high school classes. Starting at one o'clock and continuing their efforts until nightfall, the students gathered all available scrap metal and rubber within the city and on the farms located near Hearne. The huge pile of scrap collect in this manner weighed in at 78,750 pounds with the Junior Class ahead in the contest and other classes following close behind. Approximately S400 realized from the sale of scrap collected by elemen- tary, high school, and colored school pupils went to the American Legion, and was in turn contributed to the spon- sors of the U. S. 0. Victory Corps To participate in a program carried out in most of the high schools in the U. S., the Hearne High School or- ganized a Victory Corps under the direction of S. L. Stine. Two of its objectives were: C11 the training of youth for future active war service Q21 the active participation of youth in the communi- ties war effort The corps fostered and promoted: fl1 guidance into critical services and occupations, 21 wartime citizenship, 31 physical fitness, Q41 military drill, 51 61 71 81 A 'Y 1: A Y K competence in science and mathematics, ' preflight training in aeronoutics, preinduction training for critical occupations, community service All boys participated in the Victory Corps if they were physically qualified, and enrolled in one of the fol- lowing divisions: C11 Air Service Division 121 Land Service Division 131 Sea Service Division C41 Production Service Division C51 Community Service Division Regular military drill and officers' training consti- tuted a part of the program, and results were gratifying to both leaders and participants.
