We wonder what the future brings, just what is nOur Tomorrow?u Will it be full of love and laughter, as it was in bygone years? Or will it be full of pain and strife, Of suffering, and tears? We stop and say, UAW what's the use, There's nothing left for me. We must recall this thought to mind, It is up to us, what we're to be. Of course its tough, to make the grade, when all we do seems small. Each little bit of progress counts, We cannot do it all. The help we need is not so far. It's like a goal, It is a star that shine so bright we cannot fail to see the light. we must look up, and live, and try, to fit our lives for things on high For that is HOur Tomorrow.H iS. Starting at one o'clock and continuing their efforts until nightfall, the students gathered all available scrap metal and rubber within the city and on the farms located near Hearne. The huge pile of scrap collect in this manner weighed in at 78,750 pounds with the Junior Class ahead in the contest and other classes following close behind. Approximately S400 realized from the sale of scrap collected by elemen- tary, high school, and colored school pupils went to the American Legion, and was in turn contributed to the spon- sors of the U. S. 0. Victory Corps To participate in a program carried out in most of the high schools in the U. S., the Hearne High School or- ganized a Victory Corps under the direction of S. L. Stine. Two of its objectives were: C11 the training of youth for future active war service Q21 the active participation of youth in the communi- ties war effort The corps fostered and promoted: fl1 guidance into critical services and occupations, 21 wartime citizenship, 31 physical fitness, Q41 military drill, 51 61 71 81 A 'Y 1: A Y K competence in science and mathematics, ' preflight training in aeronoutics, preinduction training for critical occupations, community service All boys participated in the Victory Corps if they were physically qualified, and enrolled in one of the fol- lowing divisions: C11 Air Service Division 121 Land Service Division 131 Sea Service Division C41 Production Service Division C51 Community Service Division Regular military drill and officers' training consti- tuted a part of the program, and results were gratifying to both leaders and participants. L 41 K Victory Concerts Last year the High School Band and Glee Club, under the direction of S. L. Stine, and the Elementary School Glee Club, under Miss Helen Newton's direction, held Victory Concerts once every month in the High School Auditorium. The admiss- ion to each Concert was the purchase of either War Stamps or Bonds, These Concerts were composed of various types of music such as: marches, overtures, waltzes, novelties, and other se- lections. The programs were well attended and enjoyed by every- one. The goal for the Concerts was 12,000 and a total of more than 44,000 of War Stamps and Bonds were purchased, which proves all of the concerts were successful. Stunt Night The annual stunt night was held with great hussel and bussel in 1943. The Juniors, after spreading the story that they were to give a court scene, brought forth a negro production and won first place. The scene was that of a stage during the gay nine- ties. There was a chorus, that sang spirituals, a master of ceremonies, comedians, a bluessinger, and dancer. The entire class was blacked up and displayed a collection of old cloth- es of clashing colors, The Seniors won second place with a scene from the Arabian Nights. The setting was inside of a palace, and there was a sheik with his harem. In the midst of this was a magician who turned people into things that they would like to be. The cast was in colorful silks and satins. Soft lighting gave the scene a weird effect. The Sophomores offered a collection of jokes, songs, and bathing beauties. In spite of this the freak operation stole the show. It was done behind a curtain so that the light ma- de only shadows. A man had practically everything in him removed, then sewed up. The Sophomores won third place. The Freshmen presented a comical reproduction of a band traveling in a long, oddly shaped car. The wheels were made by. boys crawling under gray covers. The students showed and play- ed their instruments which were made of spoons, pans, jars, pots, washtubs, and other noisemakers. A Kid Day On April l, 1943, the Seniors of '43 celebrated their nKid Dayn. They presented a very interesting assembly program in the morning and enjoyed the rest of the day at the Municipal Club House. Their program had as its theme a first grade school room. The girls were dressed in little girl dresses, had their hair platted in pigtails and carried dolls, while the boys represen- ted cowboys, indians and other typical heroes of little boys. Mr. Youngblood and Miss Pitts, the Senior sponsors, were also on the program. Room mothers of the class served them a picnic in the afternoon. The climax of the occasion was the dance in the Club House which began at 8:00 in the evening. W'i,QW?W Mj,ig'Jif,Qgi',in'i ZZLJWWMM.
