That call sets the First Division in motion as would calls for hi-line or fueling at sea, for these are the jobs of the First Division. You can see their men hustling around the forecastle, swinging out stages to chip and paint the sides of the big 672. Perhaps scrubbing the mast on number I stack or down in the bos'n hole doling out paint. They even have their hands on the foul Weather gear which they pass out on occasion. These are the jobs of the deck hands who comprise half of the division. Their running mates, the 40lVllVI gunners main- tain and fire the 1L0's. These are the boys who are expected to put up that impenetrable anti- aircraft screen. Or is it a bracket you Want out off? Or is the' scullery flooding again? Or is that the bridge you hear screaming because theyive just lost steering control? All of these calamities bring forth one or more of the technical brains in MRN Division. Whether it is Chief Evans and his elec- tricians, or Hill and his enginemen and maohinist's mates, or Long and his shipfitters, all of them can be depended on for a good job. And there is no estimat- ing just how much of the HEALY is held together by their handiwork. At one time or another, they can all be found in either the machine shop or shipfitter's shop, or perhaps on security patrol, and it is a rare visitor indeed Who can't find a cup of coffee at one shop or the other, and if luck, perhaps even a matinee per- formance of a Hollywood epic at the machine shop. NR Division has seen some lean days because of equip- ment failures, but the high percentage of rated men C4 out of 5D is a sure sign that they can be counted on to keep the HEALY steaming. 1 i 5 2? The number of requisi- tions they handle is astounding and of course we can all vouch for the size of the working par- ties and the length of the chow lines. Storekeepers, barbers, laundry men, hospital corpsmen, disbursing clerks and even steward's mates-more rates than you'd believe and only in 30 men.
