DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Homer Hoyt If there is no tomorrow, all of the yesterdays will have been for naught. Humanity's struggle throughout the centuries has been to achieve freedom. Our founders won in their time and bequeathed us that great heritage of liberty which is our American birthright and the world's best hope. The present world with its fear, confusion, and tension has made current life more threatening and disturbing than ever before. Foremost is the clash of arms and minds in a life-and-death struggle between the democratic ways of life and those forces which would destroy it, cancel all human rights, and enslave the World. As the pages of history unfold in the classrooms of our country, you have the opportunity to understand and accept the political, economic, and social meaning of the American way of life. You will learn about the greatness of America in terms of her natural resources, political citizenship, productive power, economic system, cultural and scientific achievementsftechnology, and advances in the general wel- fare. You will discover that our citizens enjoy more basic rights under the goals and framework of our free institutions than at any other time or place. You will come to cherish the privilege of putting your creative talents to work in developing your abilities and skills to their highest level. You will come to appre- ciate the wisdom and ways of our democratic society and ways of upholding and improving it. Nothing on the public school program is more important than this background of training for citizenship. However, you must come to realize also that these rights involve many responsibilities both now and in the future. In the days and years ahead, you will be called upon to close the gap between principles and practice, build unity and strength at home and friendships abroad, repel any efforts to blot out freedom, demonstrate to the world that democracy works here, and give new hope for humanity in its struggle for liberty, opportunity, and brotherhood. 5
