Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1988 volume:

“We will sing for Head- land High School wherever we may be, may those happy days be cherished with our fondest memories, Where the blue and white are flow- ing, flowing for our loyalty ... We will sing for Head- land High School and our pride she’ll ever be.” 3 A friend is a treasure, And I’m happy you’re a part of my valued posse- sions. 4 5 Everyone needs someone who always seems to understand— Someone always willing to take the time, who is a joy to be around, who is always cheerful and smiling who knows to give ... Someone who shows what kindness is all about Everyone needs someone as special as you. 7 “ALL I EVER REALLY NEEDED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN KINDERGARTEN Most of what I really need to know about how to live, and what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school. These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you find them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and milk are good for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work everyday some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic. Hold hands and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in plastic cup. The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup—they all die. So do we. And then remember the book about Dick and Jane and the first word you learned, the biggest word of all: LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation, ecology and politics and sane living. Think of what a better world it would be if we all—the whole world—had cookies and milk about 3:00 o’clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankets for a nap. Or if we had a basic policy for our nation and other nations to always put things back where we found them and cleaned up our own messes. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together. From: RETIRED EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION OF MINNESOTA. ll You make me laugh When I want to cry. You’re honest with me, You’d never lie. You make my fears disaj pear, You make my proble seem so clear, If he breaks my heart hurts me so, You’re there for me I al- ways know! I hope our friendship will never end, You’ll always be my “Spe- cial Friend.” — 13 Our high school years Many say they are the best times, sometimes they seem like the worst. All the teen-age traumas—boy- friend girlfriend, peer pressure, not being the “IN” crowd, speeding tickets, parents with all the answers—we all face at least one of these. One day we will be adults, facing bigger problems, and Friday night football has come to an end. Basketball season is over again ... Baseball has already come and gone. Time keeps ticking, moving on. Christmas holidays forgotten AEA's over, and that's really rotten. Prom has passed, 88's gone by fast Graduation is coming; it's time for good- byes The year is closing ... Senior football player, Larry Brown, kept a watchful eye on the field eagerly awaiting his chance to take part in the action. Elected as Senior Class Officers were: President—James Hayden, Vice-President—Jack Lawrence, Secretary—Anita Pope and Trea- surer—Angie Moring. Demonstrating “SENIOR TOGETHER- NESS” came easy for Pam Barfield and Jennifer Johnson. “When it rains, it pours—but not inside, Willie Wood.” Paula Hollis found amusement during government class, while the others kept their heads in the books. 18 MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT: Stephanie Brown Ken Folger MOST ATHLETIC: LaBrenda Spruling Lee Danzey Our senior year is finally here. Who ever guessed it would come so soon? We’ll make the best of our last year And leave with grace in June. The pride of our class and all of our friends; Things that never die ... Sticking together until the end. Seeing how quickly time has flown by. From Absurdity Senior Beauty—Shawn McKay We, the Seniors of '88 must prove once and all that when we’re united we are the best, But when divided we fall. As we enter a world of decision, We are now on our own, but the memories that bind us to the past Will remind us we are never alone. Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day you tell me of our future that you planned. Only remember me: you understand It will be too late to council then, or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while, and afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave a vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile than that you should remember and be sad. 30 Look How Time Flies Mr. and Miss Headland High School The honor of being chosen as Mr. and Miss HHS for the ’87- '88 school year was given to Steve Watson and Jana Brad- shaw, respectively. Both were also chosen as two of the Top Eleven Seniors, and are active members of the SGA, Jana be- ing Vice-President. Jana was also chosen as Homecoming Queen and Keyclub Sweet- heart. Steve is a senior football player and is a member of the FHA, FBLA, and thr FFA. Both seniors considered it spe- cial being chosen to represent Headland High School in such a way. Sherri Tye Jason Walker Bjorn Wallden Steve Watson The seniors and the Headland High School Annual Staff would like to extend a special thanks to Mark and Sue Griffin for the donation they made towards the color section of the yearbook. This played a big role in the success of the 1988 LaResume. 33 4 Class Favorites Scottie Ellison and Sandi Burkett The 1987-88 Junior Class of Head- land High School led a year of excite- ment. They were full of Ram Spirit dur- ing the year. Their spirit was shown through the pep rally competitions and through sports participation. On September 16, 1987 the Junior Class received their class rings. Rings varied in the color of the stone and in the various emblems representing school ac- tivities in which the student participat- ed. The ordering and receiving of class rings is a moment that will be long re- membered. As the year progressed, the Juniors looked forward to their senior year. They began to look more toward their studies than to their foolish games. Childhood days are behind them and their long awaited future lies ahead. 34 CLASS OF ’89 Class Officers Treasurer—LaTonya McKay, President—Hope Condrey, Vice-President—Kan- dyse Brown, Secretary—Wendy DeShazo Kelli Smith and Amy Bush wonder why they were chosen to sell these things. Alot of changes had been made: a new princi- pal, new coaches, new teachers, new books, new schedules, new rules, and especially a new class. On this day the Freshman class got their first taste of the “High School Life”—for them, a long awaited period. Confused and frustrated, many wandered around, hoping their next class would soon be found. These teachers let us know that they even have time to play Mr. Griggs is seriously thinking about becoming a babysitter. Paula seems to have caught the “Hay Fever!” Mrs. Vaughn is always there to lend a helping hand. 72 Time To Do The Things We’ve Planned Time, time, time. It seems to be everywhere, yet not always within our grasp. “Wait, I need a few more minutes to finish my test! “Oh no! I have to go to my locker!” For freshmen, they just accept this as the normal high school schedule, but the upper classmen, needless to say. got their feathers ruffled. Last year there seemed to be ample time to take care of any business a person might have. Lunch was very relaxed and no one was ever in trouble of being tardy. New policies AKA the “Tardy System” initiated that eternal fear of being late for class. Students always seem to stay on the hurried side without any time to slow down. On the flipside, we have the teachers. Last year they were the ones complaining about not having a planning period. That was certainly understandable considering the work load they have to carry. This year our teachers were endowed with that planning period. That gift plus the addition of a new teacher unit made them more pleasant to be around. If you want something bad enough, you’ll work for it. If we make good use of the small amount of time we have this year, maybe we’ll be rewarded with a few more minutes of “leisure” time. Remember, no matter how bad it gets; “What goes around comes around!” This is where the new library shelves all started. These Festival-bound students found that hard luck can befall even an angelic group. Winston Griggs just loves grading your papers. Times are changing. New gadgets, leaders, and ideas are springing up everywhere! Although our school has undergone some very attention-grabbing changes, there are many things that stay the same. Students still arrive bleary-eyed every morn- ing before 7:45. The general pre-homeroom hysteria among students and faculty alike is ever present. There is another full day to go. Friends greet friends loudly in the halls between classes. Break and lunch are spent talking, laughing, complain- ing, and making out “notes for next period’s test. Five minute cramming is known throughout the nation. Quality time is spent glancing to see the minutes left until the bell rings. Finally that 2:55 bell rings and school is out! Mass hysteria presides again in the halls, guidance office, and student parking lot. A word to the wise though: make the most of the short time you have left here at school. Freshmen and Seniors alike are forever “watching the clock” but those minutes turn to hours, to days, to weeks, and then to months. Before you know it, high school is over for good. Teacher of the _____________ Year After teaching at a school for a number of years, one of the best rewards is to be nominated teacher of the year. This year each student voted in English class by writing the reasons their choice should be teacher of the year. For the 1987-88 school term, Mrs. Marjorie Ann Dunn was chosen. Some of the reasons were: “She gives a whole new meaning to the class Anatomy Physiology.” “Her humor helps ease the classroom situation and makes learning very enjoyable.” “She’s tough, but she’s good at what she’s doing! Mrs. Dunn received her Bachelor of Science degree at Berry College in Georgia. She performed graduate work at four differ- ent universities. In 1978, she moved to Alabama and worked with the Adult Basic Education Program from 1978-81. This, she says, was the most rewarding time and work of her teaching career. The Key Club is an organi- zation in which you have to be a real man to be a member and pass initiation. Dur- ing initiation week, a pledge must do anything a member tells him to. The Key Club has had a busy year. Among their many activities, a pancake supper for the local Kiwanis Club was the most memorable. The club also held a car-wash as a fund raiser. Officers for the 1987-88 year were: Pres.— Matt Philips, V. Pres.—Rick Frith, Sec.— Keith Hicks, Treas.—Ken Folger. The club is sponsored by Mr. W. Griggs. HUMANITIES. Humanities is an organization at HHS which can sometimes be more involved than oth- ers. They sponsor a prep bowl team that travels to Troy State’s Prep Bowl Competition, the Energy Bowl, the Alabama Academic Decathlon, the Scholar’s Bowl, and the Challenge Bowl (Headland vs. Abbeville). “Clay, I never knew you cared says Ray. The Headland chapter is sponsored by Mrs. Baxter and Mrs. Moriss. FBLA. The FBLA is an organiza- tion that is often forgotten, but very important. The number one goal of the club is to teach leader- ship among its members and edu- cate them in business office skills. They also give gifts to other orga- nizations at Christmas. 87 Time Is On Our Side Because Our Future Is Filled With Pride FHA. The Future Homemakers of America is one of the larger organiza- tions at HHS open to anyone that wants to join. They participate in many activi- ties each year, including attending the Alabama State Fair, walking in the an- nual “Turkey Walk” for the American Heart Association, and sending mem- bers to district and state meetings. The FHA also had members that entered the FHA recipe contest. The FHA is spon- sored by Mrs. Owens and Mrs. Otto. 88 FFA. The Future Farmers of America is a student-based or- ganization which educates its members in agribusiness and woodworking. Students in- volved in this organization get hands on experience with wood- work. ag mechanics, and live- stock production. The FFA par- ticipates in various livestock events including the National Peanut Festival, various steer shows, the FFA judging con- tests, and other events. The FFA is sponsored by Mr. Wood ham. LIBRARY CLUB. The Library Club is made up of all the students that take library science classes or have taken it in the past. The members are trained in library skills and each year they attend the W.L.A.A. Officers for the 1987-88 year were: Pres.—Larry Brown, V. Pres. —Dante Reeves, Sec.—Sheila Davis, Treas. — Lori Condrey, Reporter —Chyrell Grimsley. The club is spon- sored by Mrs. Vaughn. “Gee, this library’s fun!” thinks Andy to himself. The ag boys skillfully dig a hole. 89 HHS Marching Rams HHS MARCHING RAMS. The band has once again had a busy year that has been full of pride and awards. Showing much improvement this year, the band traveled to Opp for the Little Bighorn Marching Band Contest where they re- ceived an overall rating of Excellent(II) and the majorettes received a Superior(I). They also competed in the National Peanut Festival Marching Band Competition where they also received an Excellent(II) and the majorettes and color guard received a Superior(I). In the National Peanut Festi- val Parade contest, the band placed second in their division. Officers for the year were Pres.—LaTonya McKay, V.Pres.— Amy Larsen, Sec.—Kay Elmore, Flute Leader— Keisha Stevens, Clarinet Leader—LaTonya McKay, Trum- pet Leader—Danny Whigham, Trombone Leader—Marty Brannon, Saxophone Leader—Kevin Wiggins, Percussion Leader—Anthony McGlown, Director—Mrs. Brooks. 90 An occassional “Hang On, Headland always fired up the football team. Mrs. Brooks patiently gives her time and effort. Dana and Keisha just couldn’t afford pom- poms! “That football team needs to get it together!” observes LaTonya. Michael says, “I want you to join the band!” 91 It's That Time of Year Again There’s one time of year that every band member dreads; August. For marching band members, that means it’s time for band camp, where all band members are “refreshed” in marching and playing skills. It’s also the first ball- game of the year and the first half-time show. This year, the band was fortunate to have instructors from Troy State con- duct the camp. The band puts the finishing touches on their opener. Mrs. Brooks gives a pep talk before members go home after practice. The trombones and saxes work on their part of the drill. Sounds to lead the band come from these guys. Michelle gives it all she's got. Sabrina conducts with style. 92 Passing Time With Precision NJROTC. The NJROTC is an organization at HHS that instructs its members in naval sciences and also teaches them military techniques with the formation of drill teams. The drill teams and color guard participated in several parades this year including the Homecoming parade, the National Peanut Festival Parade, and the Veteran’s Day parade. Also this year a group of cadets spent a few days aboard the U.S.S. Whibdey Island and were expected to carry out specific or- ders each day. NJROTC is sponsored by Commander Hat- ton and Chief Campbell. 94 SO Os Time Out A NEW ERA BEGINS! A new era began this year in Headland sports as Al Griffin was named head basketball coach.and former Northview assis- tant coach Mitchell Sellers took over as head football coach. Both had to step in the shoes of formidable Headland coaches Steve Williams and Howard Holland. But fortunately for Head- land the transitions were successful. In his first year as varsity basketball coach, Griffin took on new responsibilities. He was formerly the B-tcam coach and made these comments on the transition; “The coaching game is the same but there’s a lot more pressure. I've enjoyed working with them (the team). They’re a fine group of men.” For Coach Sellers it was a different story in that he moved his family to Headland. He explains his reasoning for moving here; “It’s (Headland) a good place to teach and a good place to raise a family. The school system is excellent and my kids will get a good education. 98 99 CARRYING ON THE TRADITION head coach Steve Williams' last will and testament meant good news for B-team coach Al Giffin as he inherited 5 senior starters and a bench full of players equally as talented. The Rams were deadly from all over the court with superb outside shooting and solid play on the inside. This year’s team was regarded as one of the best in the area. The players this year were (Top L-R) Lee Dan- zey. Larry Brown. Tim Bryant. Jerome King. Ken- neth Jackson, Allen Espy (Bottom L-R) Robert Snell, Derek Brantley, Eric Minnefield, Chawn Brown, Kevin Hicks, and Derrick Jones. 100 1987-88 HEADLAND RAMS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE DEC 1 SL0C0M8 •OfC 4 ASHFORO • OEC 8 BRUNOIOGE OfC 11 OZARK DEC 12 COTTONWOOD •OEC 14 JONES VALLEY OEC 1719 WICKSBURG CHRISTMAS TOURN JAN S BRUNOIOGE JAN 6 9 WAC TOURN (Civic Clr -Oolhani •JAN 12 OALE CO JAN 15 ABBEVILLE JAN 19 GENEVA JAN 23 •JAN 26 JAN 29 •JAN 30 FEB 2 OALE CO • FEB 5 . Head coach Paula Bar- nette and the team are looking forward to next year. 106 The Headland B-Team continued their winning tradition this year with new head coach Mitchell Sellers. They have continued to prove that the HHS Rams are the best around. Coach Sellers gives his team a pep talk. Headland takes it up. It's anybody's ball. When you're hot, you're hot! ONE MORE TIME! Under new head coach Mitchell Sellers, the Headland Rams got off to a good start as a new era of Headland football began. With the talents of Tim Bryant. Lee Danzey, and Richard Wiggins, they turned what could've been a disastrous season into a playoff birth and a win over Abbeville. Tim Bryant was the backbone of the offense, while Richard Wig- gins led the surge. With his rushing talents he was named to the Birmingham News' all-state as an honorable mention. The defense was led by Neal Hardy, Troy Oates, and Scottic Ellison, while the kicking game struggled. 108 A humble prayer before the game Tim Bryant shines. “We’re 1 r Bustin’ Loose! Heart to Heart. The pictures have been taken, the layouts have been done, the deadlines have been met, and another great LaResume has been published. Many days and nights have been spent drawing and redrawing. Everyone on the staff gave of his or her time writing copy, typing, editing, and proofreading to make this yearbook a success. Having been a part of the creation of a sort of time capsule of the 1988 school year means alot to me as a senior. It is the attainment of one goal and the beginning of other aspirations. This yearbook would not have been possible without the tremendous talent and dedication shown by each and every person on the staff. For some it was a new experience, but for others just a new year with the chance to produce a new book. Thanks again to everyone who made the LaResume possi- ble!
