La Resume Headland High School EDITOR ADVISOR Lydia D. Fain Yevonne A. Hartzog Wc come to this school from many different lives for many different reasons—We come alone and lonely, we look for others, we search for purpose.... But in the end, the outcome of our search is our personal memory of the time called ... high school. High school is a time of growing, growing is the dynam- ic process of acquiring maturity through experience—the tender, painful haze called first love, the effort of smiling after lost ballgames—these are the shining moments that make up the great arrangement, our mature selves ... 5 High school i tudying—for a searching •' r-'T- ' ztst?- •• .y- Vv • • ' ■ .vT;5 -' J £Z . • IT J . High school is a time of finding understanding ... un- derstanding is a rare spicy plant that is choked by the prejudice and blindness—it grows in hearts, behind the friendly touch of an unfamiliar hand, as a spontaneous smile ... it flourishes at Headland High School. We gather understanding in the uncounted number of shared lives—those of the faculty, the community, of our friends—we find it growing in the simple magic of every- day. MISS LA RESUME! Fifteen lovely senior ladies competed for the title of Miss La Resume and senior class beauty. The girls appeared on stage in evening wear and streetwear. The contestants in the pageant were: Angie Austin, Ginger Singleton, Jacqueline Thompson, Starla Ard, Lydia Fain, Patty McCord, Sandra McKay, Mary Coleman, Shelia Reeves, Sherry Arnett, Jennifer Adams, Alicia Enfinger, J.R. Spivey, Laurie Parrish, and Jan McCraney. Laurie appeared in her streetwear selection of black polyester crepe trimmed in coral, gold, green, and purple. Little did she know at this time that she would be chosen as the new Miss La Resume. 18 Lydia Fain was chosen as Senior class beauty. Lydia keeps in shape by skating and dancing. However, if you ask her what she enjoys doing the most she would prob- ably say talking with her many friends and boyfriends. For the streetwear competition Lydia chose a lilac polyester crepe dress, trimmed in lace. What a beautiful smile this young lady has! LAURIE PARRISH Laurie was chosen Miss La Resume over fif- teen other young ladies in her class. She is the seven- teen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Par- rish. Her favorite foods are Mexican food, pizza, hamburgers, and hotdogs. She enjoys horseback rid- ing. Laurie's reply to what characteristics she looks for in a friend was, “Friends are a very im- portant part of life. They reflect their lifestyles on you and you are judged by the company you keep.” In choosing a friend she looks for common inter- ests, trustworthiness, and a sense of humor. “Just a REAL friend!” 19 Underclass Beauties FRESHMAN BEAUTY Kristie Starling JUNIOR BEAUTY Kim Parker These lovely ladies were chosen from many young ladies in their class to be the class beauty. Milledge and field direction of drum majorettes Sandra McKay and April Glasgow, had a very successful season. The band supported the Rams at each football game with spectacular half-time performances. The shows included a variety of popular music by various artists along with drills, pattern and dance routines, done by the band, flag corps, and majorettes. They captured and held the audience’s attention with their new sparkling uniforms and dazzling smiles. The band also took part in other activities including: National Peanut Festival Parade, Abbeville Christmas Parade, Headland Christmas tree ceremonies and the Homecoming Parade. With DETERMINATION the band showed much improvement over the past year, and in the future, bigger and better things are expected. Mr. Samuel Milledge Director 122 Flag Corps and Majorettes, show off your new suits! The HHS Band was very excited while awaiting the arrival of their new uniforms. They were measured for these uniforms March of 1980 and received them on October 2, a day before the Ashford game. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Holman, who gave unselfishly their time and energy, and with the help of our band parents, and concerned citizens of our community raised over $10,000 for this uniform drive. On behalf of the whole band, we would like to say “Thank You” for our new suits. The 1981-82 majorettes (L to R) Tonya Glasgow, Feature Twirler: Alicia Enfinger; Head Majorette: Lydia Fain; Angie Austin. Flag Corps (back row: L to R) Tammy Dyer; Barbara Jackson; Drum Majorette: April Glasgow; Captain: Marcia Thornton; Band Director: Samuel Milledge; Captain: Jacqueline Thompson; Drum Majorette: Sandra McKay; Belinda Benjamin; Pearlccn Corbitt. As the band comes to its finale The real show begins. HHS, bad as you wanna be! “Show Offs” The 1981 Peanut Festival Parade was an unforgettable day. Although it was rainy and cold, our spirits were never dampened. We exhibited with full strength and effort the real spirit of the HHS Band. The Way We Were!!! 124 NJROTC Staff officers Mark Kelley and Glenn Smith of Rehobeth; Dugg Holman, Byron King and Gayle Brackins of Headland read over the article in the Birmingham News which announced the award winning performance of the NJROTC Unit in the Veterans Day Parade. NJROTC earns the grade of Outstanding at annual inspection. Pictures! Pictures! PICTURES!!! Sandra, this beautiful girl on this picture looks just like you. 140 You mean we are Finished!?!? Editorial Producing any book is a very important and difficult job and this holds especially true for the 1982 La Resume. Despite all of the problems, the staff managed to survive. Long hours were spent in the yearbook room, we had to prove to everyone that we wanted this book, that we de- served this book, and most of all that we could produce the best book Headland High School has ever had. This year, 1 have done my best to share with you some things I thought worth remembering. With a dedicated crew and an eye for the odd and different, I embarked upon a task which has left me tired but happy. W th a smile, a ruler, a pen, a small staff, and a veritable cabinet full of ideas, I climbed on top of a job which was hard, but one which was well worth the effort. In remembering my difficult times, I would like to say words of thank you to; our advisor and friend, Mrs. Hartzog, for untiring guidance and assistance; she gave words of encouragement and instruction when I hardly saw how we could go any further. The staff members who stuck it out also deserve a special thanks. Thank you. Senior staff members, Paula, Shelia, Jackie, Sandra, and Johnny; Junior staff members, Susan, Be- linda, and Teresa; Sophomore staff members, Tonnya, Cathy, and Stephanie. Additional thanks must be given to, of course. Art Solomon, our Photograher and to Mrs. Murchison, our Herff Jones Advisor, for without those people we may not have made it. Thank you, also to Rev. Lee for allowing us to use his beautiful Rock Garden as a setting for photographs. All and all it has been a fulfilling and exciting year for me. It has been an honor to hold the position of “Editor” while working with so many wonderful individuals. While some people search for heroes and peo- ple to look up to, I discovered a hero in myself by handling the job of editor here at Headland High School. I was given a sense of pride and dignity that I will always cherish. Thank you for this opportunity, the pleasure was ALL MINE. This year, 1982, we will remember! If you are pleased, then so am I. Lydia Fain 141 AII smiles!!! WE are playing our hearts out for you! 142 We hate school work!!!!! WE are ever emerging with strength and hope to fill the voids and broaden our scope. Rams all the way!
